View Full Version : "Little Miss Sunshine" 1972 Datsun 510 - 4/19 Dropping in KA

I first fell in love with Datsuns when my friend Tyler bought a '72 510 named "Little Miss Sunshine." From the time I pushed it onto the trailer to when we finished putting the car back together overnight during spring break I enjoyed working on the car. Sadly he traded it away for a Sentra 200sx, and then for multiple cars after that. Finally the new owner of "Little Miss Sunshine" posted on craigslist, and I knew it was destiny for me to buy her back and bring it home. If everything goes well I'll have the money tomorrow and picking her up on Saturday. Here's a picture of her....

These pics are epic on a computer screen!! Little Miss Sunshine has a lot of character to her for sure! I have to say my favorite thing on your new car is the seriously JDM gas cap cover (I'm stealing that idea for my wagon  ) haha

And I see how mint your interior is! At first I was like  but then I was like  I have no interior at the with the Spitty so that's no good, but probably just as well since british cars leak so much!

I really can't wait to meet Little Miss Sunshine, she just looks so cheery. And I'm serious about having a "Not a Subaru Meet" hahahaha

Just confirmed it was a 72 510 in the movie.

HOLY CRAP! It's even Sunshine Yellow! That's awesome, except for the car getting a bad rep as "a collector's item." All I need is the hot GF who is not Megan Fox and I'll be set. lol

Way ahead of you Dead. I made an account back when my friend had the car early this year. When I get some progress done I'll make a build thread. There's a lot of useful information on the website just like here on SL-i.

These are great cars. What engine setup is/was in it?

xoSubieLegacyxo

Right now it has a L20B and a "dogleg" 5 speed transmission out of an 80s pickup.

I cant wait to see "Little Miss Sunshine" in person. You should make a video of the car and have the music as "super freak"(movie reference).....haha. and that interior looks better than both my cars. Great find there Chad!!!

HAHA!!! That would rip the car apart! And those swaps are about $8K... I have seen a few with SR's, KA's, and also CA's. You would be cutting firewalls with an RB...

Would be cool though!

After waiting in line at U-haul to pick up my rental truck and trailer, and carefully driving her home, Little Miss Sunshine is safe and sound behind my house. Here's some pictures for all to enjoy!

Yeah it has a fully built roll cage, WRX seats, and Simpson racing harness. It would be a nice autox car, and if someone would buy the car from the owner he then could purchase a new project car.

What's the first job? Rust repair? Or a tuneup?

xoSubieLegacyxo
07-17-2012, 05:22 PM
Right now it needs a tuneup, mainly suspension and brakes. I want to get the car driving and ready for the road. In the winter I'll slowly fix the rust and the goal is to have the car ready for paint by spring or summer of next year.

I hate to provide my own suggestions because I hate when people tell me how to do my car, but I love the skyline style mirrors. They look really good on that style of car.

xoSubieLegacyxo

haha Well to pass inspection they will go back in the stock location, but hopefully I will mount them on the fenders like most classic skylines.

nikolaus.conrad

Having mirrors on the fenders are a PITA to adjust, especially if your car is low to the ground. Trust me lol

haha sorry Chuck. But when the car drops in price over night by almost half, you gotta get it! plus it runs to (I'll post up a video later). Right now I ordered some much needed parts.

New Drum Hardware kit
New Wheel Cylinders
New Lug Nuts

and to make my custom coilover setup

New '91 Camaro Rear Shocks
eBay Honda Civic coilover kit

I just found 280zx front struts for sale on eBay, but I have to see if the seller will ship them instead of asking for only local pickup (lives in NC)

chuckthefuk
07-18-2012, 01:21 PM

Just sayin' stock is boring.

Depends entirely on the surface, overall weight and the lack of tread on the tires. that's all I'm saying.

So I received a lot of my parts, and I just got my rear drum brake hardware kit. I opened the box and found....an alternator. I called the store that I bought it from online and ask what happened. Turns out they are out of stock. Still don't know how I got an alternator. Now I need to find a new hardware kit for the Datsun ASAP! grrrrrrr

xoSubieLegacyxo
07-28-2012, 10:20 PM
Today I ventured out and made some head way on the car. I completed the rear coilover conversion, and only need to have someone weld the pieces together. Also cleaned up the 280zx struts and brakes to give them a "fresh" look. Also ordered more parts to get closer to driving this car soon. Still need a 240 gas pedal and throttle cable. I'm going to start looking on other Nissan forums for partouts. For now, here's some pictures.

With the help of my friend we found out that the lower coolant hose had a puncture, causing most of my newly poured coolant on the ground. Don't worry I did manage to retain the majority of the coolant. Don't want any environmentalists going crazy. lol Simple run to the local auto parts store to get new hoses, and added some water in so the car had a way to keep cool in the heat. When I start to drive the car I will flush the system and get new coolant. My new projected goal of driving this car is the end of August. There is a car show at the local Honda dealership, and usually one or two Nissans come out and always win. Time to show them where these imports originated from.

HAHAHA my bad. I heard from someone that a local yard had two 240s, and they are rare to find in a yard. I told my friend to get me the pedal and cable real quick.

I DROVE THE CAR TONIGHT!!! :D

After yesterday's discovery of a leaky radiator I decided to "patch" the area and see if it would stop leaking. I turned the ignition, shifted into first, and off we went. I went up the back alley the car was sitting, stopped to close the hood I forgot about, and then drove down the side street. I then realized that I didn't want to go that far, so I backed her up in the street, and turned around back to where I started. I might also want to point out that on the side street is where the local police station is located, so even though I had a license plate and insurance, they might pull me over. But it was a lot of fun, and now my focus is on fixing the front brakes, and troubleshooting the lights. My headlights only work in a certain spot, and my turn signals do not work at all. Here's some pictures for everyone to enjoy! :D

I still think there is something fishy about the history of the car. The engine was removed when my friend bought it, and the wiring was fried and melted. Now I just found char on the back of the underside of the hood. I seriously think this car had an engine fire. But it's reborn again!

Made some huge progress this week. Attached the hardware for the rear driver drum brake, and bled the brakes. The pedal feels very firm and it stops the car which is always a plus. Also found a local radiator shop that had a OEM Radiator for my 510. $125 later and it was in my back seat of my car. Installed the new Radiator and found no leaks so far (although I did bend a few fins when I got caught on a bolt head from the crank pully). Also had an electrical issue with the headlights not working, but I think the high beams were turned on, so now they work.Hopefully this week I will get the rest of the electrical issues figured out, and then have some brave soul inspect the car without looking at the rust, and I'll be in business.

All of this work I've done to the car in the past month of ownership has finally paid off. I entered the car into a local car show, and took home first place. I will admit I was the only car in the "Nissan" category, but you have to show up to win, and I know that there are a lot of Silvias in the area that should of been there. What got me excited today was when people would come up to the car, and ask me "what is it?" It felt awesome to tell people the history that I know about the car, and what my plans are in the future.

Took some time off from tinkering on the car, and I'm soon starting my restoration. I'm currently looking for parts to buy, and in a few weeks I'll try to get a personal loan from the bank to fund everything. The best news of all was that I found a ka24 from a local guy on craigslist (where else) whose selling the engine, transmission, and wiring harness for $250. The head is cracked, but he told me he has a spare one and tons of parts in his garage he would give me. Also looking at getting all new gauges, new wheels and tires, installing my 280zx front brakes, creating my front custom coilovers for the front struts, and the main focus of fixing the rust and giving her a fresh coat of paint. I'm so happy to see everything follow through, and once she gets put back together she'll be one of a kind!

Well it's been almost two months since I updated this thread. Not much has changed, but progress will be made over the winter. If you are not aware there is a hurricane coming towards my part of the country, so I wanted to move the car from behind my moms house to my step dad's garage a few blocks away. Now I will say that I waited until the last minute to move the car, but I had a bigger problem. The key cylinder locked up, and I snapped one of my two keys. So I had to call up my friend (previous owner) and help me hotwire the car (I did not damage any wiring). Finally I got the car running and drove her over to the garage. On the way there I did get a little sideways going around a turn, and that helped the frustration I had all night. Hopefully after the storm passes I will work on the car, and potentially start my engine swap. More details to come after the storm comes through.

Well I started removing the L20b engine in favor of a KA24 out of a 240sx. Started by removing the wiring for the Alternator, Starter, distributor, and grounds to the engine. Also disconnected the upper radiator hose, and fuel line. Hopefully by tomorrow she'll be held in by the engine and trans mounts.

Today was not what I expected to be. After church I ran to get a new up pipe for my WRX, then drove down to the next town over and got new 14x8" chrome wheels for the Datsun (now I can upgrade to 280zx brakes). After a few hours running around I finally got to work on taking the engine out. I disconnected and removed the driveshaft, assembled the engine hoist, and moved it into position. I ran into a snag when I realized the hydraulic ram would not life the hoist. I think all the fluids leaked out, so tomorrow I'll fill up the ram and try it again. I'm really excited to see this old engine out and stairing at a KA in the future.

Tonight I had a good 4 hours working on the car. Disconnected the trans crossmember from the tunnel, ran to Lowes to get chain, unbolted the engine mounts, and disconnected one of the the two inner crossmember bolts. Tomorrow if I don't have to go pick up my other car I'll cut the other bolt (it's unreachable to loosen the other side) and pull the engine out.

Sadly the car is in the garage, and the chances of me getting the KA24 installed, wired, and running are minimal. Plus that is WAY to far to drive in a car that is in this condition. You'll just have to go to a car show in my area this summer (if it's finished by then). lol

It's been a month since I last updated the thread. Currently the body shop I work at has been busy, and I'm 6 days a week. So there's little time to go and work on the car. I also do not like to work in a freezing cold garage in the middle of winter, so until the temperatures warm up I'll be inactive for a while. I did purchase some parts for my 280zx front suspension swap. Picked up new brake pads, outer tie rods, and MR2 strut inserts. While the car may be in a cold garage, the struts can be modified inside. I'm starting to save up for camber plates for the front struts so I can really set this car down on the ground. Look for updates soon.

The weather was fair enough for me to go over to the garage and work on the car. Removed the front struts, brakes, sway bar, and engine crossmember. Later this week/weekend I will start planning the fabrication for the engine crossmember and the custom front coilovers.

With the problems my WRX has given me I was on a hiatus this week. Now I'm back in the garage working on the car. Started fabricating the engine crossmember to clear the oil pan, and drilled out the holes for the adjustable tophats on the 280zx coilovers. Still waiting for my trans crossmember to arrive. My goal is to have a rolling chassis ready for the engine and trans to drop in by next weekend.

Accomplished a lot this weekend towards getting my car back on all four wheels. Saturday started out rough. I jacked up the rear end to change out the rear wheels, and the front decided to fall off the jack stands. I do like the look of a Datsun slammed on the ground....

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/03/4D830CA0731546569F90FAED32E6029F33000000-1.jpg

After I got the car back on it's jack stands I got to work on drilling out the holes on my cambe plates. One fits perfectly and the other needs a little bit of "persuasion" to fit. My coilovers are 99% completed, and the only thing I', waiting for is a set of 280zx hubs. I'm hoping to weld the engine crossmember at work this week, so I can start reassemble the front suspension and brakes.

Been busy in the garage. Last Friday I assembled all the new parts, and Saturday night I had the car on all four wheels. Sunday wasn't the best day, but by the end of the day the engine was in the car. I was stuck on the steering linkage and the engine would not move any further back. So after two days of hammering, bruising my fingers, and a lot of swearing the linkage broke free!

Currently the engine is in place, but the transmission is not. The tail shaft is hitting the top of the transmission tunnel, so tomorrow after work I might grab the saw and cut a portion of the tunnel out for more clearance. Also may have to cut a piece of the battery tray so the throttle body will clear as well. All in all I'm tired, frustrated, and ready to quit. But I feel like this is how most project cars are, so I'm satisfied with the progress.

Here's some pictures!
