I bought my car at auction and the story was that it had sat for 5 years without being turned on.
4000 miles later it was still backfiring multiple times per trip and I was more distracted by another noise that made me think the transmission had a bad gear.
Once I'd saved up enough spare cash for a transmission, I started driving the car like a track dog, trying to see just how close I was (or wasn't) to a blown tranny.
The transmission quieted down oddly enough, and all those near-redline shifts seem to have given the car a real good italian tuneup since it is no longer backfiring either.
In my last car, I'd take the RPMs to fuel cut-off at least twice a month and when I sold the car (to some dudes insurance company..) with 180k on the clock, it was still quiet, smooth and reliable as ever.
Leadfoot saved me from buying seafoam and O2 sensors! :D
