View Full Version : TPS adjustment

I was installing a new TPS in the TB today and noticed that there's a bit of adjustment to it. Is there a proper way to adjust it? I just put it right in the middle (approximately where the old one was). Are there any benefits to adjusting it looser or tighter against the spring?

You should match the new TPS with the old one; you may need to visit your dealer to have them make the minute adjustments as it varies the electrical signal the ECU sees.

Answered my own question:

Now I just have to figure out how to count the pins...

Let us now because I need to do this, I was going to tackle this project this weekend, looks like you will have it done for me lol

Found the ECU pinout diagram (this is off the 95 Legacy FSM, it may vary by MY!).

Page 27 for those who want to look in the wiring diagrams.

Okay, new question: What if I don't have any wires in pins 24 and 25? Am I just supposed to be making contact with the pins on the other side of the harness connector (the pins off the ECU)? I can't get my probes in that far.

have you tried opening the connector and pulling those wires out and testing them with your prob.

or even easier sticking two sewing needles and testing them off the needles?

Chuck, I'm not quite sure what you're getting at. Am I just trying to touch the pins on the ECU? The harness connector itself has no wiring running into location 24 and 25.

You should still be able to put the needle into the ecu while holding it with your fingers use the prob to touch the needle.. Or better yet if you plug in the harness can you stick the needle into the empty pin slot and push it all the way through so it touches the pin on the ecu> Then probe off the needle?

Or..

just tape the needle to your prob. this should give you the added length and thickness to get into ecu?

He needs to measure the signal from the TPS, running a probe to the pin on the ECU won't help

Make sure you're looking at the connector from the correct side. If there's no wiring from the pin when you're looking at the connector from the ECU side, try looking at it from the wiring side...or vice versa.

I've had to adjust a bazillion supra TPS sensors, it's not too hard once you find the wires

I'm pretty darn sure I was looking at it correctly. The way the diagram looks, only 1 way should be up. rrrrgh.

almost everything lines up perfectly except the damn pin locations for the TPS. I don't get it.

It's symmetrical left to right...so it's not a matter of up or down. The way you're looking at it... do pins 36 and 37 have wires?

This might make it more clear as to what I mean.

For now the car is driveable. My next day off, I'll take a look again - it's not too hard to get at the ECU.

I was doing some reading on Nasioc - can anyone confirm that a Scangauge II would allow you to read the TPS? Several people mentioned it with theirs on newer WRXs. I'm assuming with OBDII, all cars should be giving the same information.

Yes Scangauge can read TPS values. My Scangauge II shows values of 0~80

I have the scanXL software and it does not show tps voltage just throttle position. Im going to try and adjust mine when I get home. Im just not sure if some of these pin outs are looking at the ecm or looking at the connector.

I ended up adjusting it back to as close as I could get it to stock and it's running OK, gas mileage is about the same, and CEL is gone, so I'm waiting until I get a better weekend to futz with it again. Damn summers are so busy.

I adjusted mine earlier its kind of a pita I think. I had to remove the air box to get on the tps bolts strait and it was not 24 and 25 on my 98 it was 6 and 20. The carpet was fighting me a bit too lol.

How did you determine 6 and 20?

The FSM had a diagram and listed what each pin out was for. 6, 20, and 21 are for the TPS. Mine was right on the money too which is odd cause its turned all the way CW as far as it will go.

Okay, it must have changed then. I'll continue to refer to the MY95 FSM and retry it with the inverted image.

The crazy thing is the 98 fsm said to probe 24 and 25 but the pin outs showed different.

I found another easier way to check tps voltage. Its easier on my car at least since it use to be an auto and where I have the tcu mounted now. Pin 8 on the middle tcu connector b54 is tps voltage. I just have to take out the lower knee panel on my car and its right there.
