View Full Version : Lights staying on after JDM swap?

I'm swapping a JDM 2.5 in my 1997 Legacy Outback GT.

The marker? lights apparently want to stay on, even when the key has been removed from the ignition. I think I've tried every combination of switch installed, brights, hazard, control knob... and they just stay on.

Haynes says nothing about a timer on the lights where they'd remain on for a few minutes after turning off the engine. Is this a feature, or is it likely something else.

I didn't remove the engine, and the grounding straps were not installed on my old engine, and had been cut on the new one. I crimped a new end on the long strap that had been cut, and attached it from the R rear of the engine to a screw on the frame, and since I couldn't find where it had been mounted on the other side, I screwed it(Donated from one of my other cars) to the front of the block to a screw on the frame in front of the battery.

Isn't electricity fun?

Did you accidentally hit the "Park" button on top of your steering wheel column?

I tried it with the button pushed in both direction, when it was set for hazard, they were blinking, and just continuous the other way. Unless of course there is a different button which I missed, or there is a middle setting....

Hmm, supposed to turn off one way and continuous the other way - only 2 settings.

He's not talking about the hazard switch, he's talking about the parking light switch above the steering wheel. Just so we're clear. The parking light switch should not activate the hazards, ever.

Check the button "P" on the steering column, NOT the hazard "triangle" shape at between the two vents. If you activate "P" switch and hazard lights are flashing then you probably got your wiring incorrect when JDM lights are installed.

P button off, but the lights still blink. 2 yellow at the front, and 2 red at the back. If I hit the hazard button, all 3 lights in the rear blink, and the 2 in the front(each side). When the the regular lights are blinking they are blinking about 1/2 as fast as the hazards. I'm wondering if the hazard button could be partially stuck.

I didn't changed any of the light connections when I swapped the motors. I pulled the fuses in the engine compartment for the lights, but they didn't go off.

All 3 in the rear blink? Are we talking about the brake lights too? I think we officially need to see a video of the problem.

All three to each side (rear) and 2 to each side (front) blink when the hazard button is pushed, but only one on each corner when the hazard button is apparently off, and about 1/2 as fast.

When you swapped motor, did you also change ECU ?
If not, disconnect/reconnect ECU to make sure you have good connection.
There is a flasher in the fuse box which controls the flash rate, that is the one is malfunction not the switch.
I have to look in my fuse box.

Don't throw too many variables into the problem.
If P and hazard switchs are OFF, what happened? Let's start from here.

I did not change the ECU, I swapped out the intake manifold and harness from my original car.

1 light at each corner of the car of the car blinks slowly. They will occasionally stop briefly, but start blinking within a small number of seconds (10-20 seconds max?). They continue to blink while the car is running, and when the engine is off and key is removed from the ignition.

They continue to blink as long as the battery is connected.

is it the 'after you reconnect the battery, security flash?'
if so, does it have a key fob, hit unlock.

I never had the key fob.

Battery failed and lights flashing?
Parking lights will flash when the vehicle's battery is disconnected and reconnected.
To stop lights from flashing, either:
Press remote transmitter “UNLOCK” button once OR turn the ignition switch to the “ON” position and press programming button for one second (see below).
The vehicle interior (courtesy) light and door open warning light (DOOR AJAR indicator) will then illuminate for 60 seconds when the ignition is turned off, or until the doors are locked with the remote transmitter. Yes, the dashboard instrument panel lights will flash when the parking lights flash.

Well, I'm a bit frustrated, I can't find anything that looks like a button. I've crawled in upside down after taking off the panel below the steering column, looked around with a flashlight while moving wires around and still can't find the button. :(

It has the Subaru wireless setup part number H7110AS011.

I found a picture showing a button.

http://www.toddlampone.com/pictures/subaru/forsale/IMAG0113.jpg

It did not look like this, it was a simple black button in a small plastic enclosure slightly larger than the button itself on the end of a black covered cable- but it was coming off of the module as shown in the picture. I had to clip a cable tie to allow the module to swing down to get to the cable that was tied up behind the module.

Here is a picture of the button at the end of my thumb:

Here is a picture of the brown bundle of wires that connects it to the module- although NOT where the first picture shows it connecting(in the square connector on the R with no wires coming from it):

And just in case I need to disconnect the battery again, I'll cut that tie, and put the button where I can reach it w/o removing so much effort the next time.

That button is used to reprogram/reset a remote, not to disengage the keyless system.

If you pick up a generic remote from ebay that matches the FCC id on the Keyless Control Unit, you can use the instructions on cars101.com to reprogram it and voila, you will now have keyless entry.
