View Full Version : Ordering Brake Parts for a 2000 Legacy L ?

Friend of mine has seized front calipers & warped rotors (probably related). So I'm going to save her some money and do the job for her. Looking at re manufactured calipers (keeping the outside bracket & pins to save a bit of money, they're in decent shape), new rotors, and new pads for the front (and a brake bleed of course).
My question is this:
Most of the parts sites list 10.1" brake rotors (for the brighton, single piston caliper, not what I need) and 11.54" rotors. But cars101 says they are 10.7" rotors on the 2000 models above the Brighton, and NAPA does list some @ 10 7/8ths " sizes. WTF? Can someone explain to me what they're talking about? I thought all other models above the Brighton were the same, brake-wise. And I did check the listings, this is all for front brakes, not the rears.

I just change front brakes for my friend 99 Legacy 2nd gen, NAPA computer gave the wrong larger size pads and rotor, probably 3nd gen 2000. I had to go back for exchange to waste my time and suggest you to remove them off the car then bring it with you to make sure they give you correct parts. Their computer part system is not very good.
3rd gen is heavier so most likely uses larger pads and motors. Another advantage to bring old parts is they recycle those big and heavy rotors for you.

I wouldn't give them the old rotors unless they give you cash for them. Save them and when you have a stack of rotors/drums you can take them to a recycling place and get money out of that scrap metal. They don't take up much room in a corner of your garage, and free money for a tank of gas is always good.
Looking at subarupartsforyou.com for a 2000 legacy, they have two parts listed for front rotors. One is 2000-2004 non-GT, and the other is 90-2002 L/brighton/postal and has a note that they can verify by VIN. Don't know if that helps or not in your search for the right rotors, but you might be able to call a dealer with the VIN and see which brake parts you need.

The rotors were originally measured in metric, I think its 275mm, so the conversion to sae will vary depending on the source. its the 10.7-8" rotors that you need for the front. the rears are 11.5-6".

Interesting. Most places only have the 11.54" rotors listed for the front, which is not correct. Some actually do have the 10.7" listed though. It's a lot harder to bring parts in when I don't own the car

More likely it was the difference between the L model and the GT/Outback models. I'm noticing that everyone seems to have this issue. I might try inputing a 2001 and seeing if that fixes it.
edit: Even Raybestos' website lists 3 sizes for brake rotors for the 2000 and 2001MY. wtf?

The 290mm front rotors were only available on the later BE's, most of them in GT trim. These were the WRX sized front brakes. My 03 L originally came with the smaller 10.7" front rotors FWIW.

That means that autozone doesn't even have the correct brake rotors. Nice...
I'll have to go to Napa or Oreilley's then.
edit: Are the calipers the same with the 10.7 and 11.54" rotors? Because I only ever find 2 different caliper sizes for the Legacy and it's just the 1 and 2 piston calipers. No variance for the 2 piston ones anywhere.

I believe they are the same, the brackets are the only things that differed. The 2 pot front caliper changes started around late 03 w/ the WRX's...now there's a chance the late 03 and 04 GT's got those too, but the 10.7" calipers can easily be converted to 11.5" calipers by getting the matching brackets off of an 02- early 03 WRX. Sometimes you can get the whole caliper assembly for even cheaper at the wreckers so it might prove to be a moot point.

It's urgent, so I don't have time to order online. Rockauto's prices were very good though.
They still have listings for the 11.54" brakes for a 2000 L though

As I've finished the brake job, I can confirm, that the correct rotor sizes are 10.7" for the front and the dual piston calipers listed for all BE/BH model years are correct for a 2000 Legacy L wagon.
