View Full Version : LPG/CNG conversion on a Subaru

So call me American, or a yankee, it's cool. However, us neglected folk, who succeeded from the motherland back in 1776 have since been plagued with consumerism and the utmost disrespect from the automotive world since. We have nothing to offer on the vehicle front, and nothing the world is allowed to offer us.
That being said. Has anyone done any LPG/CNG conversions on a Subaru? This seems to be a fairly popular thing in the UK and Europe, but the only offering of an CNG/LPG vehicle here is a Honda Civic that no one wants to talk about.
Also curious on how the fueling would work? The gas station next to my house fills LP tanks on Rv's and other massive tanks that can't be removed (Ie more than bbq grill tanks), is there a need for a specific fitting that would halt me from using said station to fill up on LP if I wanted to go propane?
Let's discuss this like some blokes in a pub chocking down some warm pints

This conversion is really popular in NZ for taxi cab owners - they can drive for weeks... not sure if they have to change the ECU or not.
This article might help:

That's because it's a watered down version of a Civic everyone hates already.
I've seen Propane on a Subaru before, but it was an EA engine (carbureted) and a little simpler setup.

IIRC don't you work at a Honda dealer in Milwaukee?
anyways, think the fact that there is no natural gas fueling stations in the Us (outside the awful territory of California) and a price tag of $2000 over the civic hybrid may have a bigger impact on things.

Subaru made the EJ20C for the BL. It's based off the EJ204 and is a CNG engine. I have no idea how difficult it would be to find one and do a swap though, but the engines do exist.

Well I know that it was made in at least Japan. It may've been manufactured in other places as well, but I only know Japan so I can't verify outside of that.
And... huhwhat? I don't have facebook so I can't check it out....
If I ever sell the S401, it means I'm dead. And if I'm dead and trying to sell the S401 at the same time, that means I'm a zombie and there are bigger problems than the sale of the S401....

^Even when you're dead, the S401 would be a pretty bitchin' final resting place. You could drive to valhalla/heaven/next life.

Nothing was said other than you got your s401 over here from J-town.
I'll look into the natural gas version...got side tracked when I was going to go do that

You must be thinking of Benfolio (I know he works at a dealer). I'm in central Wisconsin. Land of the lack of Subaru enthusiasts.

The dealership that I work at just got certified to install propane conversion kits and i have seen a few being installed. Its pretty neat how it works. Each cylinder gets an injector just like a gas engine and they are tied into the stock injectors so they can be timed right and the stock injectors can be turned off. (it is switchable between gas and propane) There is a module that controls everything to do with the propane but i don't know how universal the kit is or what all you have to tie into the propane module. It isn't too difficult to install though.
I think that the system that the dealership always installed is made by a company called prins.

Drive a bit south to Madison and you're in prime scoob territory....and not just hippie haulers, either. There's an annual meet here as well, didn't have a good turnout this year from what I heard...but it's usually one of the bigger midwest meets. Figures, I finally have a subaru and then I forgot about the meet.

You working at Fox in Mqt or you at a non-subie dealer?
Yeah the way the systems work is pretty sweet. I actually used to deliver parts to this place.
