I'm waiting to pick up my ej20t but was told that my phase 2 ej22 has the same intervals so I was wondering if I just use the turbo junk from the ej20, add a manual boost controller running low boost, switch to premium fuel, and get an accessport to control the air/fuel ratio would I be able to run for a bit?

i would love to see some proof with that comparison..

What comparison?

A comparison between the turbo internals and the non turbo internals showing that they are the same... I doubt this very much..

Just is what I was told by a member. I personally don't have proof to verify or deny it. either way I know my engine could handle some boost, reason why I would run low boost but basically I'm trying to find out exactly what needs to be changed or added to do so. the ej20 will go in at some point in time after college.

Thanks...one question...would I be using my current intake manifold or wrx?

do you plan on running the wrx ecu and harness? What are plans?

Use my ecu and basically use everything I can from my 2.2 and only use parts from the wrx when I have to. only run 5 lbs of boost max on the td04

chuckthefuk

so no fuel management? 5lbs is fine but for how long?

If that's your plan then you can reuse your entire long block and accessories just notch the subframe or install a turbo subframe and bolt all your turbo accessories on.

Install turbo supporting mods if you can budget them.

Routing the intake will be fun with the EJ22 manifold :-p

Good luck.

Well could I use the wrx intake manifold or won't it bolt up?

The WRX intake won't bolt up. AFAIK it won't bolt up to the phase II ej25 heads either.

I think Chuck is overstating the difficulty in routing all the hoses and lines, intake, etc for your setup. Inlet under manifold is out, unless you build custom risers and even then I don't think it'd clear the hood. So realistically you'll need to modify the intake tract from an ej22t or ej20g (the 96 and older style) to make it work.

see how the airbox is different from yours? 90* bend from the MAF to the silencer, then 90* bend down from the silencer to the turbo. All your frontside accessories such as Power steering fits.

Note that most modern subaru-sourced turbos don't have a 90* inlet, but a 90* silicone pipe solves that.

I was gonna run a tmic so I'll just have to play with piping. I'm not running stock intake now anyway but still have it so once I get the engine I can see what could possibly work

Well yeah, what I was getting at is you can use your current intake with the ej20g/ej22t airbox to turbo path, and still use a tmic. That's what I'm doing.

Mikes bang on. I am not trying to discourage you from your plans but this is a large amount of work for a small amount of output. Using a complete ECU + Harness + IM w/ Sensors saves you hours of headaches and allows you to flash your ECU (assuming you go with USDM wrx) to allow future modifications :-D

The capability of the EJ22E / EJ222 ecu is not that broad and will force you to use a piggy back fuel management system down the line. Adding to the complexity and cost.

I tell everyone who PM's me about these types of builds.. Yes it is absolutely possible to create almost any type of Franken-EJ motor but at what cost? Is it worth it? Will *I* be happy in 6 months / 1 year?

I understand you want to minimize wiring and other daunting tasks but ask yourself one question. Where do you see your Legacy in 3 years...

Here to help not cause grief :-p

I already have a usdm wrx engine that I gotta pick up from a friend. I'm just boosting my ej22 for now because the whole wrx swap would cost too much for me to complete right now and I need a project damnit lol.

Btw Chuck I have an impreza. :smt023

still waiting to get my engine. My friend still has to pick it up which what I understand will occur tomorrow but who knows. The work will have to wait anyway due to me being laid off of work and having no money.

Make your project saving up money for a clean WRX swap.

Even if I had the money I wouldn't put the rex swap in because there's other projects before that one ...just want a little boost
