So, to sum it up, here is my problem:

My shifter feels like it is in neutral in every gear. I have way too much play. At first I thought I just had completely worn away rubber bushings, but upon getting under my car, I realized that not only are they still working fine, but they are in great shape. Then I found the source of the problem:

My shifter linkage shouldn't move like that. After looking on a friend's Subaru, I realized that I am missing two rubber spacers that keep that linkage from moving like that. The problem is, I can only unbolt one link, and it is the one that seems to be the one that is in better shape. The one there that has a lot of play seems to be secured in a way that can't be undone, leading me to believe I need to replace the entire thing.

My question is, first of all, what is this part called (specifically), and if I were to fix it, how would I go about doing it? I already removed the heat shield, but it almost looks like I would need to get the front bushing and drive shaft out of the way to get to the linkage, then remove it from the transmission.

A static shot of the linkage (the harder to see link is the problem):

The joint that you're having problems with is usually the joint that wears out first.

Thanks! I just ordered a brand new joint using the part # on that site.
