Well if you have projectors(which JDM lights do have), I would suggest going with DDM tuning. they offer their kits for around 50 bucks shipped and have a lifetime warranty.

Ill be honest, even tho I know Ill get a lot of criticizm. I went with the $32 ebay kit for my original 9007 lights (2pc headlamp/corner) and then paid an extra $10 on ebay for the bulbs to the 1pc 9003 headlights. Im just waiting to get hte new housings now. I would love the jdm headlights but not in my price range until after I get another motor in there. At least with the ebay kit I learned how everything goes and wouldnt feel as bad if I broke something.

this still hasn't answered my question :smt009
yes i have JDM headlights with projectors.
i still don't know how to go about this. are there some good "how too"s that would apply to a 95-99 Subaru legacy
im not trying to be rude or anything just really wanting to get the most out of my headlights.

Maybe im not understanding what you are asking for. But I still say go with a kit from DDM Tuning(http://www.ddmtuning.com/). They will give you the great light output you are looking for.

Heres what Im saying:

what size bulb do the lights take? ie 9003/9006/9007 etc? If you go online you can order the hid bulbs themselves. Youll then have bulbs to match the lights. Bulbs will have a simple clip style connector.
You then look up ballast options for your 99 legacy. I believe thatd be the 9007 correct? This will give you the ballast with the harness that plugs into your factory wiring, with the same simple connector to use your new hid bulbs.

Using myself as an example, Ill have the factory 9007 plug going to the ballasts, and the ballasts powering the 9003 bulbs needed for the 1pc headlights.

I hope this answers your question.

Okay so you get the h1/h3 HID bulbs and the 9007 HID harness and ballasts. You may have to modify the harness to utilize the separate hi/lo ballasts since youll no longer have the dual filiments to one ballast.

thank you. what brands would you go with?
i was thinking something on the cheap side just to get started then switch to something better down the road.

I used DDM tuning for my JDM headlights. 4500k(wanted the white and best light output) 60 bucks including shipping plug and play easy to install come with everything u need right out of the box and the lifetime warranty and great customer service doesn't hurt. But I ended up using some silicone just to be safe.

I also bought some Xentec HID's off of ebay which I've had in my H3 fogs as a cheepo way to get into HID's. A LOT of people have complained about them not lasting but mine have lasted 2 years and still going strong lol. Even with cracked foglights housings that I've had to fix and reseal and replace overtime. Only problem I ever had with them was a broken ground inside the housing. which was my fault when i installed i bent them a little too much so i just replaced the terminal and its working just fine again.

In terms of what WESTcoast did did I was thinking the same thing when I got my HID setup but he has a custom projector setup. his projectors in his JDM headlights are aftermarket that's why they look different. I wanted to do the same kind of setup that he did when i got mine so that i wouldn't have to cut a hole in he stock JDM housing but again only way to do that for you would be to get the different setup in terms of projector becaue the bulb size is different as the bulb in west coast projectors are a DS2 bulb not an H1 bulb that comes with the JDM headlights.

Final note. Dont bother getting HID's for your high beams. Not worth the extra money because they would take too long to warm up before use. Recommend eithier PIAA or Hella.

Honestly I went with ebay for mine, I originally bought a kit from one of the vendors at the FormulaD Drift competition in New Jersey during the summer.. which was great and all but my coworker broke one of my bulbs. I checked ebay and not only did I find the replacement bulbs for $10 but I found the exact same kit that I bought for only $30 or so. I just recently sold this kit to my friend to use in his mustang, Ill be buying a bi-xenon kit so I have low AND hi beams after i get my affairs in order. The kit Im looking at now is a whopping $54, also from ebay. Say what you want about ebay products, but my coworker has been using the same kit for about 2 to 3 yrs with no problem and mine has been great the whole time I had it.
