So I have wanted this keyless entry/alarm system ever since I heard it was available and that it was plug/play. Well as I later found out I was one of the many who this is not actually pre-wired. I sifted and searched and dug the internet for information on this specific module and a good FSM or DIY. Well there are a lot of Bits and pieces out there but there is most definitely no DIY on a hard wire install. So on that not here is a DIY on the Install along with a lot of information that I have come across and would like to compile in one place.

Tools:

Philips Screwdriver
Wire Strippers
10mm socket and extension
22-18 Gauge splice taps
Butt Connectors
Ring Terminal
*Insulated* male and female spade connectors
Electrical tape (Several Colors optional)
Zip ties

I would say that about 1 in 3 of 95-99 BD/BG's in the junk yard have a keyless entry system out of those that do I would say 1/2 have the security upgrade. With this being said I would look around for everything because the security upgrade is about as easy to install as pumping gas.

Step One: Equipment prep

It is strongly advised that you prep everything before trying to install. Read this entire DIY before installing and also take a look at the factory instructions I have posted below as well. I promise your life will seem easy later...

First separate each group of wires that will not go with the main harness.

The solid Blue/Green/Orange wires are for the LED valet button. As long as you have about 1.5-2 FT of these wires you can go ahead and splice the female spade connectors the each wire. Then splice the mail spade's to the button end of the wire. Then loom the wires with electrical tape. These insulated connectors are used so that the dash trim can be removed later if wanted.

Next loom the two wires that go to the programming button and the four wires that are apart of the shock sensor. Again this is just cleaning things up keeping it tidy.
The rest of the wires will just be hanging out until you get them spliced in and then you can loom and zip tie them to your liking.

Here is a good way to make a loom, hold one end of the wire bundle lightly in a vise while using your hand for the other end. Then you use your free hand to wrap the wire tightly in tape. I like to change up the colors so that they can easily be identified.

Step Two: Siren
Now that you have your harness prepped what you want to do is position the siren under the hood and run the wire to the driver side kick panel.

Use this bolt just above the airbox to mount the Siren. I pointed mine down because that's how they were installed in other vehicles.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/07/DSC03773-1.jpg

Run the wire along the fire wall using the clips that hold the main harness. To bring the wire inside you need to make a whole in one of the rubber grommets. Directly in front of the driver seat will be a sort of diamond shaped rubber grommet with nothing going in or out. The Letters LH are imprinted in the rubber. Use the Philips screw driver to poke a small hole to run the wire through.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/07/DSC03772-1.jpg

Now use your butt connectors to splice the wires back to the siren wires on the module harness. solid red and solid black and larger gauge then the rest of the harness

Step Three: Dash Disassemble

Remove the four screws holding the plastic surrounding the gauges. Also remove the panel just below the steering wheel which is held in by two screws and push clips. You also need to remove the driver sill and kick cover.

Step Four: Mounting Module

Remove the 10mm bolt that holds the right side of the ECU in place. Use it to hold the module in place with the wire harness connections facing down. (Sorry I thought I pictured this I will do it later) Should be pretty self explanatory. The reason for mounting the brain first is for cable management purposes. Its easier to run the wires in a clean way when you know where they need to go.

Step Five: Main Harness Install

Now this is where its gets a little complicated, well if your color blind and you hate wiring. Just be patient and this thing will go in with out a hitch OK? READY GOOD! :smt023

I like to start with the ground so as to not to somehow forget it later. Just below the fog light button is a 10mm bolt that holds the dash on. Use this to for the ground wire with the ring terminal.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/07/DSC03774-1.jpg

Directly in the middle of the under-dash will be a metal box with a harness coming from it, directly in front of that is a smaller black box with a harness coming from it. This is the harness that you need to tap into. The wires from the module match with the same colors in this harness. white/red stripe, White/ two silver dots. I believe this is for the locks but to be honest I am not sure.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/07/IMAG0160-1.jpg

The next connector we will tap into will be located on the box just above the panel of fuses and closest to the driver. You will need to tap into two wire here Red/Black Stripe/one silver dot, and yellow/green stripe/ one silver dot. Again the wire in the car correspond to those on the module harness. Use you splice taps again here.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/07/IMAG0161-1.jpg

Now dont go anywhere you right there for the next one. In the fuse box just below the panel of fuses and closest to the driver is where you need to tap into the white/yellow stripe.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/07/DSC03779-1.jpg
Sorry for the bad pic of this one but its the first wire in the bottom left of the connector

The last wire to be tapped is a little tricky to find. It is a red/white stripe/ TWO silver dots. This is important that you get this exact wire, there are alot that look alike but its there. Look near the driver door vent with the bulk of the harness is coming into the dash and splitting up. This is where it should be located. Again tap the corresponding red/white stripe/two silver dot wire from module harness.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/07/DSC03780-1.jpg

Ok your done with splice taps and now you need to get your butt connectors. following the running board to the kick panel you should find a large octagon shaped connector and next to that a small white connector with two wire coming from it red/green stripe/one silver dot and a green/with green dot.
You need to cut the red wire and spice each end to a different wire on the module. The red/green stripe needs to be connected to end that goes to the connector. The pink/ ?? Stripe (sorry, its the only pink wire though) from the module needs to be connected to the other end of the red/green stripe/ one silver dot that goes back into the wire loom.

......sweeeeet hard parts over now comes the fun part..........

Step Six: Program button

This button needs to be placed in a discrete place but you will still need access to it. Just behind the hood release is a metal bracket that has a square hole in it that is absolutely perfect to mount the button into...So put there!
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/07/DSC03784-1.jpg

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Take a break grab a brew and sit down in a comfortable position for once in the last hour or so you have been doing this. At this point it is advised that you test the system before installing the security upgrade. Please scroll down to see programing directions

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Step Seven: Shock Sensor

This is about as simple as you can get. Just plug the harness into the module and run the sensor up to the steering column underneath the dash. Use a zip tie to hold it directly to the metal that is the steering column. The more solid the mount the better because it will feel the shock better.

Step Eight: Valet Button/LED

This is the blue, green, and orange wires that you put the spade connectors on. Run these up through the dash towards the gauge trim where the button is located and plug them into the corresponding spade connector.

Step Nine: Starter Interrupt

This is the last and by far the easiest step to this install process. Plug harness into module, find starter harness plug under dash (four wires in six wire connector with black plugs) plug each end of the module harness into the corresponding starter harness plug and vwala!

PROGRAMMING

So you have your keyless installed and you are ready to program. Please follow the following steps exactly

1. With the driver side door open and the key in the ON position
2. Hold program button for 15 seconds AND CONTINUE TO HOLD THE BUTTON. DO NOT LET GO. The locks should cycle three times, you should also here the siren chirp and the lights flash.
3. Press lock on each remote. If you only have 1, press it 4 times, or if 2 press it 2 times on each etc. Make sure that the system recognizes each push of the lock button. this is an old system and does not work fast. It will chirp, flash, and cycle the locks for each push. You may have to wait for it to finish each cycle and push again.
4. Release program button and turn key to off position

The system should now be ready to go, lock and unlock with all remotes that were programmed.

System Reactions:

When the lock button is pushed and system is armed, car will chirp and flash twice
When the unlock button is pushed and system is unarmed, car will chirp and flash once
The led will flash in a steady single flash when system is armed, push valet button to enter valet mode, led will blink steady with two flashes. Push button again to exit valet mode.

Thats it and thats all. Below is a collection of a few manuals i have found that explain a little bit more about how the system is supposed to act and the different options you have for the starter interrupt. Including Passive interrupt which disables starter 1 min after vehicle is shut off. Also how to tune the shock sensor is explained.

NOTE: the following instructions are not specific to this model of keyless entry but is VERY similar in behavior and wireing setup. Mostly colors are different, pin locations, etc. etc.

Also if anyone needs remotes let me know because the yard I go to has tons. They come as is but the two i bought worked and now that i have mine hooked up I can test before i buy them.

If there are any questions just shoot them over and I will see what I can do

Any idea if this will work for a first gen too? I already have the whole unit with the security upgrade minus the valet button/LED and I would like to add the whole system to either my sedan or wagon.

to be honest I am unsure but I would assume that the harness will not be the same. Just take a look under the dash and look for a few of the wires that are mentioned. If more than three are in the same locations I would go for it...

I'm curious about this too. What about the remote? did you have to order an OEM remote and just reprogram it for the junk yard system?

Sorry folks been out the game for a minute. It was pretty easy after I had looked at so many systems and manuals and knew what I was looking for. The remote I also got from the junk yard. Subarus are not a rare thing here in Colorado lol. I have two systems tested with remotes and loomed up like the above for 60 each if you gentlemen are interested....

No I got the remote from the junk yard. They have five gallon buckets full of remotes and I just dumped it out and bought the first four I found. They had tons both for second and te third gen system.

Damn really I posted this a year ago. Almost to the day haha. Seriously took me a month of looking through every forum and half together manual before I decided to go cut one out of a car and figure it out. Cost me 40 bucks for the system and took about two maybe three hours to install and tuck everything nice. If you find a system but can't cant find a key fob I can sell you those separate for 25 tested with a new battery :-) not really sure how much they are new but I'm almost positive you can't get the remotes from Subaru any more so no logo:-(

Not problem! I'm looking to go get a system for mine in the upcoming month cause I don't want to spend and arm and a leg on a new system and you can never go wrong with factory.

Hello. Just wondering if you have any of the keyless entry fobs available? I would be interested in a couple. Or do you have the whole thing as posted above all prepared for installation for sixty still? Does that include two fobs ? How much to ship it to Victoria bc Canada?

Thanks
