Head bolt torque question EJ22

A buddy and I put my new head gaskets on today, but his torque wrench doesn't go below 50 ft-lbs. He believes it's safe to leave my head bolts all torqued down to 51 ft-lbs plus a 90 degree turn on each. Its a phase 1 EJ22 and I just want to make sure it wont hurt anything to leave them like that. Their the head gaskets with graphite. Please tell me I didn't just screw myself out of $50 for head gaskets. He is a subaru guru but I just want someone else's opinion. It's not a turbo motor so I can't see the harm but you never know

Only one 90° turn? If i remember center bolts are 25ftlbs others are 11ftlbs. 80-90° on all bolts then addition 80-90° again. Graphite may be a little forgiving if you loosen and retorque properly. But i would recommend new and not chance it

That is exactly what I did not want to hear, I am so screwed that was my last 50 bucks to my name and I need my car for work... Thats the last time I let that f****** idiot work on anything of mine.

I would go to Subaru and get a print out of the TQ specs... I still have the one for EJ25D's on my wall in the shop... I never remember how to do them...

From my FSM:
oil washers and bolt threads
Tighten to 22 ft lbs
3 1 6
5 2 4
Tighten to 51 ft lbs
Back off 180 degrees first, then another 180 degrees
Tighten #1, #2 to 25 ft lbs ( 27.1 ft lbs Turbo)
Tighten #3, #4, #5, #6 to 11 ft lbs (14 ft lbs turbo)
Tighten all bolts 80-90 degrees (in sequence), DO NOT EXCEED 90 degrees
Finish tighten another 80-90 degrees (in sequence), DO NOT EXCEED 90 degrees

If I was in your shoes, I would rent a torque wrench that went lower than 51 (most 1/2" ones go down to 20, so a 3/8ths inch drive would prob be the ticket)
Back off all bolts 270* then 180*, then follow the rest of the procedure.

Tighten #1, #2 to 25 ft lbs ( 27.1 ft lbs Turbo)
Tighten #3, #4, #5, #6 to 11 ft lbs (14 ft lbs turbo)
Tighten all bolts 80-90 degrees (in sequence), DO NOT EXCEED 90 degrees
Finish tighten another 80-90 degrees (in sequence), DO NOT EXCEED 90 degrees


Worst comes to worst, you'll still need new HG's, but clearly they're not correct as it sits.
