stuck in fourth

So I was driving my car all day. and just now it would not come out of fourth gear. the clutch seems easier to push in but Idk what's goin on

Push the clutch in with the car off and no ambient noise. Do you hear anything disengaging?

Even if the clutch won't disengage, I would definitely think you should be able to get it out of gear with the engine off. I can pop my vehicle out of gear when coasting quite easily without pushing on the clutch (but no foot on the gas).

Any more information you can give us? Noises that are out of place, miles, model, etc?

I got it out of gear after playing with pedal. looked over everything and seems ok. drove this morning and had no issues. about a month ago it got stick in third. could it be something inside bell housing?? I'm freakin out did this is my baby were talkin about

When's the last time you changed trans fluid... and has your clutch fork got grease on it?

Fluid. changed with clutch about 50 or 60 thousand ago. when I wipe dipstick off there is gray film on rag. clutch fork?? Is that inside bell housing??

50-60k? on your trans fluid? You're overdue then.
Which dipstick are you wiping off?

Clutch fork is the lever that your slave cylinder pushes against to disengage the clutch.

Tranny dipstick. there is no grease on that- should there be?? And I should change my tranny fluid???? But it smells like cat piss!! Lol

Uh, yes, there should be transmission fluid on the trans dipstick.

No shit there is fluid on the dipstick. there isn't grease on the shifter fork tho- should there be grease on that is what I'm asking. Shop by my house says change fluid and see how that looks cus it might be internal. one more question- my father says a clutch should only be replaced once in a cars lifetime- is that seem right??

You shouldn't have grease on the dipstick. There should be trans fluid. Try a drain and a refill - check your owners manual on the quantity you should be putting in.

^^ your father is so wrong. Clutches wear out if they're abused. Based on that, I would never take mechanical advice from your father again.

Clutches depend on how you drive. Clutches can last 170,000+ miles if taken care of. Umm issues with the stuck gear might be linkage loose or something internal sticking. If the fluid been real dirty run a can of seafoam trans tune for a couple hundred miles then change fluid subaru extra s

My clutch has gone 208,000 miles and counting... mostly highway miles and no inexperienced drivers. Give the same car to a new driver in the city and it's a different story... clutch life definitely depends on how it's driven.

Change your fluid and inspect the shifter linkage as the others have recommended.

Based on what conditions? If its city driving, no, the clutch will experience a lot more wear than highway driving where its engaged 99.99% of the time vs. the city where you're constantly starting, shifting, etc.

Definitely get that fluid changed. Subaru Extra S fluid is a bit expensive but oh so worth it in these transmissions.

I also heard 00models had tranny issues. but what's the difference. between my year and 01-04 trannys?? And I went to one of two dealers in my area and had had no idea of extra s tranny fluid. I also drove my car about 80 miles today and had no problems at all

Your trans is the same as 01-04.

Some dealers dont know what extra s is because they don't use it because it's expensive for the customer and they typically only sell it by the drum. Plenty of Subaru parts sites will sell it in quart bottles though.
