Pull obd2 codes without a scanner?

Ok before you say go to the auto parts store as I know about 10 of you will, my car is not road legal yet and I don't have the money to fork out to rent a scan tool. I've read that you can make the check engine light flash the codes but I am still trying to figure out how. It's a 97 legacy GT 5 speed. I know it can be done as I read a post on another site about someone doing it with a 99 legacy. Need to get my car to pass emissions so I can register it. Supposedly there is a two black connectors that you plug into each other and turn the key to run and it will flash the codes.

There's two green connectors under the dash. When you connect them the dash light will flash, count the flashes for the corresponding code.

But find someone who has a code scanner near you. It's safer than using the diagnostic connectors

the green connectors should be found dangling above/around the throttle in the shin region.

Not to bring back an old thread but I tried the green connectors, the check engine light just kept flashing non stop so I unplugged it. I think that just tests all the sensors when you connect the green ones.
