So I pulled the 2.2l out of my OBS today hoping that the previous owner throwing timing only bent some valves but instead finding the rings are bad. Since I don't know how much else is wrong with the motor (bought the car cheap) I'm thinking I should probably just get something that runs to put in there rather then rebuild since I'm still a novice. I was weighing the option of a 2.5l but I'm unsure as to what exact years are plug and play with my car.

The car is a 2000 Outback Sport w/ a Phase II SOHC EJ22.

Thanks :smt023

Pretty sure that the 2.2 was not used in 2000 outbacks. You should have an ej251 unless someone has already had their hands in there.

It's an Impreza Outback sport, not Legacy Outback :D

I'm pretty sure the 2000 obs came with an ej25. Same as the RS?

Cars 101.com says: the phase II ej22 is standard, the 2.5 SOHC is not available for that model.

The OBS didn't start coming with the EJ25 until 2002 I believe.

Any insight in to what year/model cars I can plug and play swap?

YES!

2.2's all the way till 02.

2000-2001 Impreza 2.2 only. Here are 4 pages of places that have them in the country. I'm sure you can make other fit, but these are direct swaps with no problems.

I've checked out car-part but there isn't anything close enough to me to make it worth it right now. There's someone local selling an EJ25 from an SF chassis Forester (P2 SOHC I believe) and I was more or less curious if it would fit.

I guess I should have been more direct in my initial question but I do want to know what other options I have.

Well, If I remember right, Matty2hotty installed a 2.5 in that postal wagon that had a 2.2. I think it dropped right in, but I'm not sure. It's a Phase II motor, but I dont know what ECU it's running.

At most, you would need an ECU to go with it and you should also get an un-cut harness and intake with injection. So I know it can be done. As for the "bolt in" part, yes, it will bolt in that I do know.

I'm more or less worried about and wiring nightmares. I'd prefer to have somethign to drop right in and I'm 99% sure there's and EJ25 that does I just don't know which one.

Forester should be the same (disregard the 2.0 listed)
http://car-part.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi

Legacy should also work... Note that AT and MT might be different, so that you might need to figure out. I never did when I got the motor for my BH.

It looks like the only direct interchange on these years are 2000-2001. So those should not be a problem and all should be plug and play, but I'm not 100% positive.

That looks like the same info I'm getting as well. Can anyone chime in and confirm?

Edit: The links you're posting don't work :P

I can tell you right now that the ej25d won't work - I looked into swapping it, and the electrical connectors are different, MAF has different amount of wires, etc. Sorry I can't point you in the right direction, but my gut feeling is one of the early ej25 SOHC's, or another phase II ej22 is what you'll have to do.

Are the heads still good? If so you could throw in an ej22/ej25 shortblock of pretty much any year and run with it.

My bad... dont know why they dont work.... No matter though. It was just results for 2000-2001 Foresters and Legacys.

And yes, Mike is right about the EJ25D not working. Then again those motors are Phase I. The 99 motor is a little different, but still will not swap in without work.

I believe the motor I got for my BH was from an Impreza, but I'm not completely sure. The MAF and EGR systems are different from year to year, this is why they list only the 2 years, from what I can tell.

So it's not possible to swap in an EJ25 from any year without facing some sort of wiring nightmare?

I can't see why an EJ25 from an RS wouldn't work - they are SOHC, and MAP intake...the body of the car you have essentially has all the same functions as the RS.
The RS only got a larger engine, aero addons. It's the same shell, same HVAC, same headlights etc.

Have you looked at chatting with other OBS owners?

I didnt say that.... I said that for the Phase I EJ25D... Twin cam...

The Phase II 2.5 SOHC should not be a problem. You just might need the ECU, thats it.

I haven't talked to anyone as of yet. Most of the guys here are way more friendly then those on rs25 and I've scoured their forums looking for my specific situation with no avail.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I wasn't sure what you were saying but I understand now.

Ok so here's what I've got. I'm 99.9% sure that I can drop in an EJ25 from an 01 Forester with little to no issues as far as wiring. They were nearly identical to the SOHC RS motor. Now the question is, would the motor coming from an automatic car cause any issues? I can't think of anything that would cause a problem, but I'm really a noob when it comes to this stuff. My forte is taking stuff apart and putting it back together, not so much technical stuff.

Also. I have a two sets of EJ22 heads. One set is a Phase 1 Dual port the other is Phase 2 Single port. I know the Phase 1 EJ22 heads are a pain on Phase 2 EJ22 blocks (Some wiring issues due to lack or addition of sensors and you have to use the Phase 1 Intake Mani) but I'm not sure about the EJ25. The reason I ask is the possibility of a frankenmotor but I'd prefer to keep dual port if I'm swapping in the E25 anyway.

This is digging deep into my memory, but IIRC there was a difference between the auto and manuals for early sohc 2.5's. Something to do with the timing system. I'll do a little digging.

Thank you! It's my only concern at this point. I know that same motor from a 5speed car would plug and play.

An ej25 should drop in. my gt got a phase II 2.2 because it blew a headgasket and my rs has the same engine. pretty sure he said be didn't change wiring

Yes it should work but it's my understanding that there may be subtle differences in the motors between model's and years. What year car did your 2.2l's come from?

My rs has an engine from 99. Dealer didn't tell me what year the engine in my gt came from

Ok so after literally a full day of forum hopping, google searches, and phone calls. I've finally got the answer I need.

Yes an EJ25 from an Auto 01 Forester will work. I will need to use the intake manifold off the EJ22 (Map vs. Maf) and change the 5 speed bits (Flywheel and such). Wish me luck :D

Motor is in my carport :D Tomorrow I'll be swapping the Intake Manifold, harness and if I have time taking the auto bits off the 2.5l. Should probably make a build thread at this point haha.

So your 2000 OBS EJ22 Phase II motor is still MAF? I was just curious as that's what it sounds like.

Nope the OBS motor is MAP, the Forester motor is MAF.

Sweet baby jeebus I think you're right! I can't find PN's for a MAF for that motor on any parts website! OMG SO HAPPY

Edit: Yup, MAF was up to 99, 2000+ N/A is MAP. Thant means no swapping intakes for me :D

My 2000 GT BH... No MAF... No EGR.... (5 speed)

I'm paying close attention to this thread, as I have a number of bent valves due to a faulty aftermarket water pump casting, which caused an idler gear on my timing belt to get out of shape. Phase II EJ22's are next to impossible to find around here.

Same here. It'll work. I actually have a good set of Phase II EJ22 heads I might be getting rid of. I bought them to rebuild mine but since the ring on one cyl was bad I wont end up using them.
