So I was driving back from my grandparents house a few days ago and my airbag light just turned on. I don't know what to do to find out what is wrong with it. Is there a simple way to get it to tell me what the problem is or do I have to take it to a dealer to find out?
What I have done already is just check the fuse. Also I do have WRX seats in it now but the seatbelt connector is connected so I don't think that is the problem.

Thanks for the help in advance,
Logan

*EDIT* So I looked at the service manual and I can't decide what connector it is talking about. I am just wondering if anyone can help.

2nd gen cars have a 2 bag system. Driver, and passenger. There is also a airbag modual in the dash, under the stereo.

First thing to check would be the fuse. There are a couple of them in the kick panel on the driver side. If it's not one of those, then it gets more complicated.

Check all plugs to make sure they didnt some how come unplugged. It's super easy to tell what ones are for Airbags. All of the connectors and split-lume are bright Yellow.

If any of then are unplugged, that is your problem. Dont plug them back in with the battery hooked up, you might have a bad day....

Another problem could be that one of the bags or the computer (for the bags) is bad. Has been known to happen.

If you are intimidated by this, you can take it to a body shop or the dealer. The sun visor's in my car say have the dealer check them after the 10 year mark. I never have and most liely never will, but I work with this stuff so its not a big deal to me.

As for your seats, thats not the problem. They have nothing to do with the airbags system in 1997. Or at least from my experience, they never have. Not even my 2000 GT was affected when I had the seats out.

Hope that helps.

The fuse is fine, and the connectors are all okay. I think I have found how to use the air bag diagnostic though. It seems like there is a single wire with a small connector on it that will fit in the airbag diagnostic connector. I was thinking it needed to be jumped but I guess not.

You can try to run airbag diagnostic. It's not so hard. Under the dashboard you have a black connector, that looks like this

Near the connector there are two ground jacks. Put one of them into pin 1 and turn the ignition key on, but don't start the engine. Now look the airbag light and read the error codes.

Here is a big picture if you can't read the codes on the pic above. http://media.snimka.bg/s1/1000/028244082-big.jpg?r=0

Yeah, I pulled it a few days ago. The light is very intermittent. Some times when I start the car it stays on for the rest of the trip and other times it doesn't come on at all. Anyway, its code 22. The FSM has good information on how to take care of it.
