View Full Version : 2nd Generation Sedan (BD) Barbbachello's 98 BD 5MT - August 2014 Update
Barbbachello

This is my 98 BD Silver Anniversary AUDM Liberty. Exact same as the Legacy but has a different name as to not be confused with our war veteran association. Paid $4500 with 180,000kms and a aftermarket headunit and also quite a lot of road noise that turned out to be either 2 cracked rims and a dodgy back left wheel bearing, or maybe both.

Went from factory 15"s
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/5a2D1-1.jpg
To some Gen 3 16s. I think this is when the modding bug bit me
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/pI7Enl-1.jpg
A few weeks later while at a wreckers looking for S13 parts with my friend I picked some up trim pieces to paint black to replace the tacky woodgrain I had
Before

After
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/3ruPt-1.jpg
The next upgrade was some WRX seats that I found on Gumtree for $200 that were 5 mins away. Beauty.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/bqfKD-1.jpg
It turned out the seats were from a wagon so the brackets on the seat backs dont line up at all.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/9W7Kvl-1.jpg
So found some new back seats from a sedan that im getting tomorrow :D
My most recent mod is a JDM legacy boot garnish that came with some JDM dirt and wiring. The dirt was all nice but AUDM and JDM wiring its slightly different. So after having no reversing lights for 2 months I finally noticed the lights were actually plugged into anything. So i swapped the globes and wiring from my old garnish to the JDM one, which was a PIA to do
AUDM

JDM Goodness also debadged
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/e8RSK-1.jpg
Thats it, so far
Future Mods:
JDM Projector Headlights DONE
GT-B Suspension
Double Din Headunit
New rims, either bronze or gunmetal. Something spokey like new STi wheels. DONE
UEL headers and catback exhaust DONE
Stuff to do when I can be bothered:
Change dashboard light colours
DIY/Buy mesh grille DONE
Red door cards
Super future mods for off P's:
WRX/STi engine swap
And because im from Australia

Like the car. You can probably sell the wood grain dash parts. The hvac surround is hard to find.

The replacement one I got doesnt quite fit, must be from a different model. So i was going to keep it or paint the original to replace it
Picked up my sedan rear seats. They fit sooooooooooooooo much better. Almost as good as the liberty seats

Clean car.
Most USDM stuff isn't actually USDM at all, but instead 'world market'. Such as the "SUBARU" garnishes, and split headlights. But on the BG's for example, they are still different, NZ/AUDM had clear indicator and reversers on the subaru garnish, and weren't orange like the USDM ones.

I just had a delivery of some GTB projectors
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/10/xfcIq-1.jpg

There is a DIY on wiring them up. Its for USDM cars but it could be similar.

Theyre better than the stock ones. Im either going to get some bugeye WRX oem ones (if i can find any that is) or something spokey similar to the new STi wheels.

Cheers. Its not as clean as it looks. I dented my drivers side guard by reversing into a pole a few months ago and dont like having it in the photos haha. Got quoted $1200 to fix it :|. Ill probably be getting that fixed over summer (or your winter). Then probably some headers. Keen for the rumble
I dont think ive ever seen a non australian person like vegemite...

Thanks. Im not sure if it really did anything to improve the light output, but they look better
The light will be distributed more evenly, but sometimes that means people think it doesn't seem as bright or intense any more.
Now its waiting for you to chuck HID's in them. I did that on my RX Lib and it made a massive difference!
Barbbachello

I had HID's on my xmas list for my brothers to get me but no luck :\. Ill get them eventually haha

I had a delivery of speedy racer UEL headers last week. Attempted to do them my self yesterday and was unable to crack the bolts on the cat. Fair enough. Had a mate come over today. We cracked the first bolt and were so close to the second one when it started to round off and cut into the bolt. Safe to say im disappointed. The next step is my brother and his cordless impact wrench. If that fails ill be going to an exhaust place and getting a catback installed as well haha

Finally got my new headers in. Had to remove the O2 sensor, drop the exhaust before the first resinator, using an angle grinder cut the bolt on the flange that attaches to the headers and then chisel the bolt/washer out. It was a few hours work but it was fun lol. Had no problems with clearance on the oil filter or sump etc. It has more of a rumble but i need a full exhaust to make it sound proper
Gratuitous pictures

Hey man, your car is looking good! How bad is that dent you mentioned? If it's big and not pinched, you might be able to get it out with a body puller suction cup. They sell them at most parts stores here, at least.
Good up the good work, and post a sound clip when you can!
Barbbachello
01-30-2013, 01:36 AM
I tried poping it out with no luck. It was on the crease in the guard so it made it super strong. I ended up finding a same coloured car at a wrecker and bought the panel for $70. If you didnt know id swapped it you wouldnt know its different. Saved myself $1100 :D.
I tried filming it the other day but i think my car has an aftermarket muffler or something so its really quite. Ill do a proper one when i get the rest of my exhaust done

So its been a while since ive posted anything here. Ive moved over to an Australian forum, suits my sleep pattern a little better. In the last few months ive gotten the rest of my RX/GT kit, finished off my nexus install and some suspension upgrades. I originally bought some V5 STi struts and springs for $400. After a while somehow the top hat nuts came loose and as a result of me trying to re tighten them, sheared the top off of on the struts
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/08/fB7YI7q-1.jpg
So upgraded to some BC BR Coilovers and im loving them.
In June i drove up to Sydney from Melbourne (800km and 9 hours) with some new subaru mates for a big national meet in the Hunter Valley. 85 cars and 1 awesome but very lumpy road. Heres the official video for it. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUVbSDo_z4o)

Hey mate, nice Legacy. Looks like we have similar taste. I live in South Australia, which state are you in?
This is going back a bit I realise, but I have just received front and rear GC8 seats that I ordered a while back and noticed that you also have them installed. The front seats bolted in no problems however the upper part of the rear seat doesn't want to slip down onto those grooves..
Did you have trouble with this?

Looking good, man. I dig the tablet install. I like the idea of it, but hate that it is a permanent install. Sound Man almost makes me want to get an iPad. http://www.soundmanca.com/ Those kits look clean. If they had something like that, I might do it.

Id call it semi permanent. I can take it out in a few minutes assuming i have a screw driver. Being mounter inside the dash means people wont think "i can just smash the window and grab it" imo
those fender flares look amazing.

Currently saving for paint and swaybars etc. Then next year will be time to save for my conversion
How'd you make the BFM fit? Is that the BD's clear plastic thing, or did you modify the BFM's cover?

I removed the side and top mounting tabs on the bfm as well as the black shroud of the cluster so the cover is just sitting over the cluster. In the car i removed a good section of the dash shroud as well as part of the plastic behind the cluster to make more room for the CCFL inverter
