2000 legacy shifting issue...automatic

Ok...I have a 2001 legacy... 120,000 miles automatic. starts off sluggish and found that it does not always go into 1st. when shifting up you feel it hit hard it seems in the rear end. when you down shift from OD to 3 it hits hard...still seeming behind. does not seem to slip and it does this warm or cold...It has new fluid and filter...is there a sensor or module that controls this? Thanks...Brian

I also found tonight that if I manually shift from first two second the front tires will bark very easily.....

Still doing it...how about the band brakes? what does that do?
