At this time I'd like to say thanks and make acknowledgments to Warrior (https://sl-i.net/FORUM/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=684), who's excellent DIY JDM Projector Install (https://sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=5941) served as my primary inspiration for this version of install guide. Also, my thanks goes out to all the contributing posters in that thread who asked and answered many technical questions with regards to JDM Headlight installations. They addressed many issues over the course of the last 5+ years that the thread has been going to date, and have helped make this guide as thorough as I could make it. My thanks and appreciation goes out as well to all of the contributors to my thread Where to find the elusive JDM headlight connector? (https://sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=24288), without whom these adapter harnesses would not be possible (hansvonaxian (https://sl-i.net/FORUM/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=15659) comes straight to mind as the fist person to identify the JDM connector for me (https://sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?p=285796#p285796) :smt023). Thank you to Eekay (https://sl-i.net/FORUM/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=8109), for his excellent write-up JDM Headlight Blackout and USDM Light Pattern Conversion (http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/diy-jdm-headlight-blackout-and-usdm-light-pattern-conversion-127120.html) over on LegacyGT.com - anyone performing the conversion to JDM lights needs to follow his instructions to convert their beams for Left Hand Drive/Right Hand Traffic for use in North America. Thanks, also, to Thomistopheles (https://sl-i.net/FORUM/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=33460) who kindly allowed me to reproduce his photo of his H4 headlight connector in this guide. And of course Reason (https://sl-i.net/FORUM/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=4), who egged me on to make a limited production run and who has agreed to take care of individual retail sales, as a fundraising benefit to support (https://sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?p=296363#p296363) SL-i.net (https://sl-i.net/FORUM/).

1995-1995 Subaru Legacy Plug-and-Play USDM-to-JDM Headlight Adapter Harness
For Off-Road Use Only

***Important Disclaimer*** Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) headlights are engineered and aimed for Right-Hand Drive (RHD) vehicles, traveling in Left Hand Traffic. In other words, vehicles in Japan drive on the opposite side of the road from traffic in North America. For this reason, installing unmodified JDM lights on a car traveling on public roads in the USA is dangerous and illegal, and therefore, using JDM lights on your USDM car is for Off-Road Use Only. In order to project a beam suitable for North American roads, your JDM headlights must first be converted for Right Hand Traffic and then carefully aimed, so as to provide proper forward road and signage illumination, and not blind oncoming traffic. The maker and/or seller of these adapter harnesses cannot be held responsible for damage to persons or property, fines, death, insult, or injury from the use of these harnesses, and all responsibility lies solely with the installer/user.

These adapter harnesses facilitate the electrical Plug-and-Play connection of Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) Subaru Legacy projector headlights to second-generation North American Subaru Legacy Sedan, Wagon, or Outback cars for 1995-1999 model years (Subaru chassis code "BD", "BK", and "BG") ONLY. They have been custom-built by hand for second-generation Legacy cars, using the highest-quality components available, including genuine Yazaki OEM JDM connectors and terminals manufactured in Japan, and SXL cross-linked premium automotive wire, quick-disconnects and ring terminals manufactured in USA, (soldered on for maximum reliability).

Before attempting installation, be sure you have the correct adapters for your Legacy. Determine which type of headlight plugs your USDM Legacy has installed. 1995-1996 models should use H4-bulb style plugs (also called HB2 or 9003 connectors). 1997-1999 models should use 9007-bulb style plugs (also called HB5 connectors). Note that the 1997 Model Year Legacy is sometimes considered a transition year, and may have either H4 or 9007-type connectors installed from the factory. Also, pre-owned cars may have had the stock headlight connectors replaced in the past, so be sure to double check with which kind your particular vehicle is equipped:

If your 1995-1996 Subaru Legacy is equipped with H4 Plugs (aftermarket replacement H4 connector shown)... ...make sure you have the H4-style JDM Adapter Harnesses.

*Two pieces 16-gauge insulated automotive wire, each approximately 6-12 inches long (optional, not included).

JDM Headlight Installation Instructions:
1. Of course you've probably had your JDM lights chillin' in your kitchen for weeks. In order to be suitable for use on Right Hand Traffic roads (i.e. North America), pattern conversion of the beam cutoff shields is mandatory. For more information, refer to SL-i.net and LegacyGT.com user Eekay's DIY JDM headlight conversion thread here:
JDM Headlight Blackout and USDM Light Pattern Conversion (http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/diy-jdm-headlight-blackout-and-usdm-light-pattern-conversion-127120.html)
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_7175_640x480-1.jpghttps://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_3223_640x480-1.jpg
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_3256_640x480-1.jpghttps://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_3317_640x480-1.jpg

2. After performing beam pattern conversion, closely inspect your JDM light fixtures to make sure they are clean and ready to swap into your vehicle. Verify that there are no warps, cracks, or holes in the housings or lenses, and that the seam glue sufficiently seals the housings from the elements. Inspect each headlamp and city light bulb for broken globes or filaments (never touch the glass of a headlamp bulb with your bare fingers), and replace as necessary. Rotate the turn indicator bulb sockets counterclockwise 1/8th turn and pull them free from the JDM fixtures. Store for safekeeping:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_4586_640x480-1.jpghttps://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_4587_640x480-1.jpg

3. If your JDM lights included the JDM plug pigtails with female terminals, disconnect the plugs from the sockets and store them for safekeeping. If your JDM lights are missing one or both of the JDM pigtail plugs, don't fret, because the JDM plug pigtails with the female terminals are not required with your USDM-to-JDM Adapter Harnesses. Be sure that the JDM lights you purchase do include the JDM sockets with the male terminals. Your USDM-to-JDM Headlight Adapters will plug directly into these JDM sockets:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_3225_JDM_Socket_01-1.jpghttps://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_4572_640x480-1.jpg
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_4571_JDM_Socket_Ch-1.jpghttps://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_1741Edit_01_NoPigt-1.jpg

4. Make sure that there are no loose wires on the rear of the JDM fixtures, and that each wire leads to a straight and clean male terminal inside the plastic JDM socket connector. Verify that each color wire leads to the correct terminal position in the JDM socket - instances of wires inserted into incorrect positions on the JDM socket have been reported, and this will lead to malfunction of your JDM lights. The Driver-side connector uses the same wire positions as the Passenger-side connector. The wire colors and their positions in the connector should correspond to the diagram below:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_4564Edit_03_Labels-1.jpghttps://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_4566_640x480-1.jpg

5. Ensure that the JDM socket connectors are firmly affixed to their mounting brackets on the JDM light fixtures, then temporarily set your fixtures aside in a safe place.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_4577_640x480-1.jpghttps://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_4578_640x480-1.jpg

6. Make sure that the vehicle's ignition is switched to "OFF" and that the key is removed from the ignition switch.

7. Open the vehicle's hood.

8. Disconnect the vehicle's battery.

9. Carefully disconnect the stock headlight plugs from the USDM headlight fixtures. Do not cut the wires to your stock connector! (9007-type plug shown):
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_4551_640x480-1.jpghttps://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_4555_640x480-1.jpg

10. Using a flathead screwdriver, carefully release the upper locking tabs vehicle's center grille. Reaching behind with your fingers, gently lift the grille upward to release the lower grille fastener tabs. Stock retaining tabs are very prone to breaking, so be gentle (your grille may vary). Remove the grille and set aside.

11. Remove all upper headlight attachment fasteners. Note that, depending on model year, your Legacy may have either one-piece combined headlights/turn signal housings, or, separate two-piece headlight and turn signal housings on each side of the vehicle. In the case of two-piece light fixtures, the turn signal housing mounting screw must be unfastened and the housing first be pulled forward in order to gain access to the remaining headlight housing's 10mm bolts:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_7193_Legacy_USDM_H-1.jpghttps://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_7205_640x480-1.jpg
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_7196_640x480-1.jpghttps://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_7195_640x480-1.jpg

12. Carefully rotate the turn indicator bulb sockets counterclockwise 1/8th turn and pull them free from the USDM turn indicator housing. Set your turn indicator housings aside in a safe place:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_7206_640x480-1.jpghttps://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_7207_640x480-1.jpg

13. You will re-use the USDM turn indicator bulb sockets, wiring, and 2-filament 1157 bulb, so carefully tuck the bulbs near the fenders such that they won't become damaged. Unbolt the remaining headlight 10mm bolts, and carefully remove the USDM headlight fixtures from your Legacy and store them in a safe place:

14. The JDM corner turn indicator bulb sockets you previously removed are each connected to a two-wire plug, and each hold a single-filament 1156 indicator bulb. They operate only as a flashing turn or emergency flasher. The 1157 USDM corner lamps differ from the JDM corner lamps in that the USDM lamps are dual-contact and dual-filament. Normal operation of the USDM 1157 corner bulb is as follows: one filament illuminates constant-on when the vehicle's parking lights or running lights are switched on, and the second filament independently flashes when the vehicle's turn indicator switch or hazard switch is activated. Shown here is a comparison of the JDM vs. the USDM turn bulbs and sockets:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_4591Edit_01_TurnBu-1.jpghttps://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_4595_640x480-1.jpg
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_4601_640x480-1.jpghttps://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_4596_640x480-1.jpg

15. The four mounting tabs of your USDM turn indicator bulb sockets are very similar to those of the JDM sockets. However, the JDM bulb socket has 3 long tabs and 1 short tab, while the USDM bulb socket has 1 tab that is the longer than the others, which is too large to fit any slot on the JDM fixture. This tab, which will be in 12 O'clock position when the socket is inserted and rotated into place in the JDM fixture, will need to be slightly reshaped in order to fit the fixture. Remove the 1157 indicator bulbs from the USDM bulb sockets and carefully set aside. While wearing eye protection, use a file, Dremel rotary tool, or utility knife to very carefully shave a bit of plastic from both edges of this mounting tab until its length is shortened enough to fit the JDM fixture mounting slots. Be sure not to damage the rubber weather seal. The plastic material is fairly strong, so proceed slowly and always place safety first. Test fit the modified socket to the JDM fixture and make adjustments as needed for a secure fit. Note that the tab only has to be shaved enough such that it fits the larger slots on the fixture, not necessarily the smallest one. Make it so for both Driver-side and Passenger-side sockets. Reinstall the 1157 bulbs you set aside prior to modifying the sockets.

16a. OPTION 1 (Go to step 17 if you do not wish to use a city light jumper wire. Or, go to step 18 if you do not wish to connect your city lights at this time.) To ease access of the connection to the running light wire inside the fender, add a short jumper wire for each side of the vehicle. This jumper will connect to the blue lead of the JDM adapter harness to power the JDM city lights. Cut two 6-inch lengths of 16 AWG wire (not included) and strip 1/4 inch insulation from each end. Crimp the included insulated female disconnect to one end of each jumper. Use a pair of 16-18 gauge Posi-Taps to make the taps simple, secure, reliable, and removable (not included). Amazon.com link to Posi-Taps (http://amzn.com/B00389R8KU)
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_5402_640x480-1.jpghttps://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_5404_640x480-1.jpg

16b. Use the Posi-Taps to tap the solid red wires of your USDM corner running lights. Insert the solid red running light wire of your corner lamps into the slotted cap and screw the tap body onto the cap. Be sure the tapping pin fully pierces the insulation of the red wire for a good contact with the copper strands inside.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_5417_640x480-1.jpghttps://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_5418_640x480-1.jpg

16c. Pass the stripped end of your jumper wire through the end cap and fan the wire strands slightly. Insert the bare strands of the jumper into the body of the Posi-Tap and screw the cap on securely. Make it so for both sides of the vehicle.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_5426_640x480-1.jpghttps://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_5428_640x480-1.jpg

16d. Pass the end of the jumper through the fender wall into the engine compartment. Repeat for both sides of the vehicle. Your jumpers are now ready to easily connect to the blue wires of your JDM Headlight Adapter Harnesses.

17. OPTION 2 - If you are unable to find Posi-Tap connectors (recommended), then Scotch-Lok wire tap connectors, or T-Tap connectors, suitable for 18-gauge wire, will suffice (not included). If ease of access to the city wire connection is not a priority to you, you may skip the use of a jumper wire and plug the male terminal of the harnesses' city light wire directly into the T-Tap at this time. Make it so for both Driver-side and Passenger-side city light wires.

18. Bring your JDM fixtures to the vehicle, but do not fully mount them yet; in the next steps you will need access to the back of each unit. Make sure that they will not fall off the front of your car and become damaged as they are handled. Align the mounting tabs of the turn indicator bulb socket to the corresponding slots in the rear of the JDM fixture. Insert the bulb holder and rotate clockwise 1/8th turn until they are fastened into place. Make it so for both Driver-side and Passenger-side bulb sockets.

19. Carefully push the JDM fixtures into position on your vehicle until they are fully seated. Ensure that you do not pinch or bind any of the wires connected to the turn indicator. Fasten the outer and inner mounting brackets of the fixtures with their 10mm mounting bolts. Leave the upper center bolts free for the moment. Make it so for both Driver-side and Passenger-side fixtures.

20. Now that your headlights are mounted to your vehicle, gather your 4Zero1Motorsports USDM-to-JDM Headlight Adapters. Insert the USDM connector of the adapter harness into your vehicle's stock headlight plug. If your connectors are 9007-style plugs, make sure that the locking tab on each plug is fully engaged on the adapter harness. Make it so for both Driver-side and Passenger-side adapters:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_4414_640x480-1.jpghttps://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_4416_640x480-1.jpg

21. Insert the JDM plug on the adapter harness into your JDM headlight socket until the locking tab is fully engaged on the JDM adapter harness. Make it so for both Driver-side and Passenger-side adapters:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_4419_640x480-1.jpghttps://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/4Zero1Motorsports_IMG_4421_640x480-1.jpg

22. Place the remaining 10mm headlight mounting bolt though the ring terminal of the grounding lead of the adapter harness and secure the bolt to the open headlight mounting bracket. This ground connection enables the low-beam headlamps to remain lit while high-beam headlight switch is active for maximum illumination, and is also necessary for the city lights to operate. Make it so for both Driver-side and Passenger-side ring terminals:

23. Slide the insulated male terminal of the city light lead into the female terminal of your running light jumper wire until the connection is secure. Make it so for both Driver-side and Passenger-side terminals. Your 4Zero1Motorsports USDM-to-JDM Headlight Adapters are now fully installed.

24. Reinstall your center grill (this is a great time to substitute a JDM grille if you have one):

25. Reconnect the vehicle's battery. Be sure to perform a safety check for stray tools, wires, shop lights, etc., and clear any of these items from your engine compartment. Insert the key into the ignition, and switch it to "ON". To test the proper operation of your JDM headlights, rotate the headlight switch to the first "click" and verify that only the corner lamps and city lights are illuminated. Rotate the headlight switch to the second "click" and verify that the low-beam headlamps are also illuminated. Activate the high-beam switch, and verify that the high-beam headlamps are illuminated, AND that the low-beam headlamps remain illuminated. Also check the proper operation of your turn indicators and emergency flashers.

Thanks! Spent a lot of time to really describe and show every step-by-step. If there is anything that is difficult to understand, please let me know and we'll try to clarify. :smt017

BTW elislider - if your avatar location is current (Portland, OR), these harnesses are designed and assembled locally, just north of you in Vancouver "Da 'Couve", Washington :)

Ah, nice!
If you would like to investigate the 00-04 harnesses, I have 2 sets of JDM HID headlights and my 03 Legacy as guinea pigs

I found the part numbers for the 3rd gen connectors. They are in my Subaru Connector thread.

I have not found anywhere to buy the JDM side connector, but I do have the manufacturer and part numbers in there.

JDM side: Yazaki 7123-6244-40

GT/Outback USDM side: Sumitomo 6180-3261 or 3P090WP-MT-SPA from EasternBeaver.com

Thanks for posting these! There is talk of 3rd-Gen JDM conversion harnesses in the future...
