View Full Version : Loud noise, only under load

Hello, I've been reading and reading and reading trying to figure out what could be wrong with my Legacy. I'm hoping someone here might have some insight...

Here's some background: 96' Legacy L Wagon, 2.2 / Automatic / 155k miles

When accelerating something in the engine bay (I think) makes a loud whirring noise. As soon as I let off the gas the noise stops, if I rev the car in neutral it does not make the noise. The noise seems to reach it's loudest point at around 35-40mph and at that point the car vibrates or shakes a bit. Once you move past 40 the shaking stops, but the noise is still there.

The transmission shifts without any trouble and the car accelerates smoothly. The noise seems to be getting louder and I am debating sourcing a used transmission to replace the current one (even though it's working smoothly).

Any thoughts?

a video of the noise would be nice, sometimes actually hearing the noise instead of just reading it that it is a "whirring noise" will help us out.

my 98 outback was doing the same thing when i bought it. I didnt even bother trying to fix it since it drove just fine and now its 5 speed swapped anyways. But when i pulled it out of the car, i did notice one of the axle stubs wasnt seated any more, it just flopped around.... whether that was the issue or not, im not sure. But might be something to check! Other wise its probably the diff in the trans.

How long did you drive it like that? Did it get any worse? I can't tell if it's as loud outside as it sounds inside.

about 10 thousand miles, and i drove the living piss out of it. offroading, rallying, i even did an autox in it for shits and giggles. never got worse.

Definitely good to know! I'm going to be commuting 160 miles per day next week. Just don't want it to explode or give out on me, haha.

lemme back up.... now that i hear your videos on the computer, not my phone... your noise sounds about twice as bad as mine did.... lol
still wouldnt be to afraid to drive it... but i'd be shopping car-part.com for a new tranny asap

That sounds like differential noise to me, but I'm on my phone.
