Id like to see some pictures of what your retrofit looks like. Im thinking of doing one but I was planning on the morimoto mini's because I thought the fx-r's would be too big for the housing....

What happened to the SS? I saw that the motor blew, then didn't see a follow up.
slaytalera
09-02-2012, 04:32 PM
the FX-Rs fit no problem, you will have to cut the mounting bracket off the stock projectors (probably for any set of projectors though)
the SS blew a head gasket, and im assuming a piston ring at the same time, so i fixed the head gasket and then it chomped through all the oil and siezed the motor. TL;DR on that car is that the last owner didnt take care of it at all, and as i fixed things, all the other broken stuff became apparent in an endless cycle of fix one thing, 5 other things break

Oooops, I read it wrong.....I thought you swapped the FX-R's into the stock headlights, not the JDM projectors. Thats good for me because I didnt want to have to cut anything(well once I can find the money to put into buying the kit)

Its not bad, just use a hole saw and epoxy the projector to the reflector....the money thing im still trying to figure out, so i cant help you there

Well i didnt expect to go much farther then the mod list above, but when things come in for the right price i cant say no....a friend of mine was selling a potentially built RSRA trans(even if its not, big deal) for $2200....picking it up for $500...win!
mike-tracy
09-16-2012, 01:49 PM
Other than being a piece of Subaru's history and rare, what is special about the RSRA tranny?
slaytalera
09-16-2012, 08:31 PM
Welp turns out the guy doesnt know what he's talking about and it ISNT RSRA, the big deal is that those are literally the strongest 5 speeds subaru ever made. Not that id need it since im only going vf11 at 5 lbs of boost, but itd be cool to have
mike-tracy
09-17-2012, 01:37 AM
I think you're thinking the WRX "RA" gearbox, not the old school Legacy RSRA. The USDM 04+ Turbo 5mt's have the "RA" gear widths, but in the States we got shafted on the gear ratios & final drives. Except for... The FXT (4.44 FD) and the 05 LGT (4.11FD). Those are the ones to get if you want to stay with a 5mt.
slaytalera
09-17-2012, 10:54 PM
Yup, my bad. Ive been saying RSRA from the first gen and i forgot to dust off the impreza terminology

Sorry for the delay, ive been out of power for the whole week due to hurricane Sandy(she was quite the bitch), here are pics of the car and some of the aftermath around my house
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/11/Outbackwith04STISpringsandStrutssmall-2.jpg
we lost power almost immediately when the storm started, which never happens to us, so we used the back up generator:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/11/IMG_3452-1.jpg
midway through the storm a tree introduced itself to out deck, had it been any closer windows would have shattered

I was just informed that i never updated for my bumper, heres a crappy shot from the shop(had the bumper on before the suspension went on)
I also threw my charge speed knock off grill on, to find out that theres STILL a gap, so i guess its for the L/prefacelift cars...ugh

Interesting! I've always wondered what a GTBL bumper would look like on a two-tone BG. Keep up the good work... Your car has loads of potential. So envious of your sunrooves.

I went crazy searching for the yellow fogs and just couldn't find anything that I felt comfortable with. In the end I bought a rattle can yellow tint specifically for fogs. They usually run around 40$ on eBay. IMO I believe to be better than the vinyls.

I wound up getting the same fogs that were in the bumper (Bosch pilot 160s) but they are clear instead of yellow, and even those were hell to find, only one guy has them on ebay, and they are just thin enough to fit. Hella 500s are too thick and hit the mount and look really weird. I might go the spray route, i saw someone else with the yellow centers and fell back in love with them.

Im picking up paint tomorrow to spray it, and sometime during the week i gotta visit my buddy whos a parts manager at a dealer, see if he can get a template for the holes in the hatch, if not i might have to either find someone local(Nik how close are you to NJ??) or just use some adhesive/automotive 3m tape to stick it on

Can u take a pic of the underside wing? I'm sure the rfrb should have the same mounts as a usdm one. Only difference being that it says rfrb and has brake lights on it.

Reuben replaced his RFRB wing with a standard one after his cracked, so it should be be a problem, here are some better pics of the bottom. Im heading over to the suby dealership tomorrow to buy/order(if i have to) the mounts, and see if they have a template

That's cool where'd u fetch those at?
wentz912
08-15-2013, 03:16 AM
Paint, to my understanding will never match 100%, if you aren't already aware. Due to the flake not laying exactly the same from one batch of paint to the next. It will be close, but won't have exactly the same sparkle the rest of the body does.
slaytalera
08-15-2013, 08:25 AM
The local paint shop, most higher end auto paint shops shod do it, they were $30 a can with the clear coat mixed in already.
And yes, paint is never a 100% match, but given how faded my clear coat is, this will be the shiniest, best looking part on the car, paint wise anyway.
nikolaus.conrad
08-15-2013, 03:16 PM
It looks the same as the USDM GT/Outback wing mounting points. The three bolt/studs shouldn't be a problem, I had difficulty with the two upper mounting thingys, not exactly sure what to call them lol. On my wing i just took them right off and sanded the fiberglass to make it flush, then used 3M double sided adhesive to hold the front of the wing on the hatch.
On a side note, I may have to pick up some of that paint, there are a few areas I'd like to touch up on my car lol
wentz912
08-15-2013, 04:33 PM
For the paint not matching I was more talking about the way the flake will lay when sprayed. Depending on how that happens, it may "pop" a lot more or a lot less than the rest of the car, or anywhere in between.
