no, i'm not losing faith in subaru, i'm losing faith in my car...it's not even really faith...more like, love...i guess

as some of you have seen in the Seedy Underbelly thread i'm got a rust spot by the RR wheel well.

i've lost all motivation to make my car look good.

i dont want to wash it.
i dont want to wax it.
i just don't care.

is there anything that i can do to feel better about my car without dropping an arm and a leg into a body shop?

someone, please give me motivation.

Treat it like a red headed step child and get it REALLY REALLY dirty. Leave it like that for a week (dried mud over 3/4 of the car) Believe me, you'll start caring about it again. I am actually putting off playing in the dirt because I just washed my car yesterday.

the busted bumper, the rat nest wiring, the crack rear bumper, the chipped fender (see Seedy Underbelly) doesn't bother me at all.

but this rust is just KILLING my "team spirit" (as it were).

however i did fix my yellow headlight yesterday. didn't come out perfect, but i'm happy with it. BTW, anyone know how to get water droplets out from inside the lense?

I think the best motivation is a nice sunny day when im out driving and my car looks like dog-hell while everyone elses is nicely washed and purdy. When my car is clean i actually feel better about myself, i suppose thats not so odd... :?

that's not odd at all! i USED to feel the same way. but i know that no matter how clean and perfect and smooth and shiney my car is, there's this unsightly brown gross spot on the back.

And then my dad and I spent a week fixing it. Welded in some metal (the piece behind the wheel was a bondo patch, which is a flexable mesh you put bondo over. Then painted to match.

Rust sucks. It makes you feel less about your car, even with how much pride you have in it being yours, others see the rust, and you notice it more and more. So, I guess, its up to you. I just let the rust go for a while and it got worse and worse. The fix up wasn't the greatest looking, but it did look better than the rust. It made me feel better about the car, and it made the car look slightly better. I was also happy with the fact that we did the work.

i pretty much gave up on my car too. i was looking for the thread but it's gone.

not that it's a bad car, it's a great car, just not what i want. that's why it's for sale.

yeah, it's just a college car that lost it's luster in a hurry. it was also the result of a bad decision.

Thanks! The tacoma is my dad's in california, one toy among many (his S4 avant and 72 chevelle are his primary toys). The older toyota.... well... it looked good, but was a piece of junk under the hood. It was carbureted and ran rich, and just idled rough. It was having overheating issues too, and was just a money pit. I wanted something a little more highway friendly for the commute between school and home. That thing could barely hold 60-65mph on the highway. But it was fun and a good highschool vehicle. I liked that I never once saw another toyota with that exact lightbar. Some were close, but always more dinky looking. There is one truck up at my school now that has that lightbar, but its a newer yota and it doesn't look as good IMO.


Anyway, as to your car. Y'know the legacy platform just isn't that great to do alot of performance stuff too, but it is a very solidly built car. At my driving school we get all types of cars in, and the older legacy's and outbacks never seem to have anything rattle in the interiors, and still just feel solid when driving. I can't say much the same about brand new domestic cars. Hondas are as solid as the legacys, toyotas not so much, but still better than fords/chevys. So if anything, you have a car that is just nice and strong and that you will be able to depend on. They are only valued at $3k or so, so if it is still running like a champ, why not run it to the ground? I hope to keep mine through college and then upgrade to a impreza outback sport or similar.

One thing you could do is pick up an older toyota for $600-800 and use it as a trail truck, just something for fun. Wouldn't have to insure it for many yearly miles or anything. It'd be just a fun truck that you could abuse and not care about. Keep your subaru as a daily driver, maybe take it off road from time to time, but that way you can keep it from getting too bad and in the meanwhile put money away for a downpayment on your next car.

Unless you're just ready to move on. Whatever you do, sit on it a while and think about what your next step is. Maybe take it offroad this weekend, and it'll jog your memory why you love the car. Or maybe you'll realize you do want something new. Who knows? :-)

haha, yeah i was wondering about that..

it's not that i want to sell, i fully intend on driving this car until it either explodes or the engine seizes up into a huge aluminum paperweight.

i'm just lost a lot of the pride that i used to have. and it's ALL because of that rust..

Check out Wyotech - and probably some of the local community colleges run DIY repair classes. There was one offered near me about a year or so ago, they pop up everynow and then.

i'm thinking about doing some research and tehn experimental grinding and painting..it's already screwed...what else could happen.
