View Full Version : What are my options for tuning?

First off my car is a 1997 Legacy GT wagon 5 speed, stock ECU and wiring. Going to be running a phase 1 EJ22 with phase 1 EJ25D heads, MLS head gaskets and a wrx turbo at 8-10psi. I guess Cobb doesn't make anything for cars this old but I was wondering what may be available for my car. From the research I have done I know that I should definitely install a wideband but I'm not too sure what else as I haven't found anything specific to my car and what I'm doing. I was thinking an SAFC but again I cant find any specific videos or write ups on tuning a Subaru with one. Any info/advice is greatly appreciated as I'm a noob to tuning.

Wideband o2 sensor is a must to visually confirm your air fuel mixture. If the reading is to low your mixture is running lean and can cause detention. If its to rich then you could wash away your rings or flood the engine. The goal of a skilled tuner is to find the sweet spot for the A/F mixture which is around 12:1 ~ 13:1
..
So your options are limited to your budget and your tuner selection.
..
Are you planning on doing this yourself.

No I'm going to get as much professional help as I can.. with the tuning that is haha. Right now I'm reading up on the GReddy emanage and that seems to be the way to go and it's within my price range. That, a wide band and someone professional tuning it for me should be all I need to run 8-10 lbs maybe 12 if feeling greedy.

10 psi is a bit much for a EJ22 bottom end. Higher compression will cause issues down the line. I suggest you spend some time reading about whats needed to route your pipes/sensors and whats a safe level of boost. Lots of build threads on sli.

As far as GReddy eManage this is a full stand alone. Is this your goal? Do you need data logging / launch control / fuel maps/ignition table switching?
SAFC II can add/reduce fuel and advance/retard timing.
Not to overload you with info but are you sure your going down the right path?

Everywhere else I've read says GReddy emanage is not a full stand alone but the closest thing in a piggy back form of management. I figure use that so I can really play with the system and so I can still pass emissions (they plug into the ecu here in CT). I'd like to data log and learn all about it, like I said I'm new to this but the emanage is only 180 and seems like a smarter way to go than an safc. Which do you think would be more user friendly? I'm not taking this thing out racing just building a street car with 8-10psi. I have also seen that 10psi on the right tune with the heads I am using is no problem at all on the bottom end and in fact that the bottom end in my motor is stronger than that of the EJ25D. Not running a big turbo just a stock td04, and I don't hammer on my vehicles like some probably would after installing a turbo
EDIT: I think I am off quite a bit on the price of the emanage, also my heads are EJ25D heads and a phase 1 2.2 block so my compression ration will be around 8.8:1 which isn't bad for boost

Emanage is a piggyback, not a standalone. I have one installed in my car but have not done a ton with it yet. From my research I have also found that is it one of the better piggybacks. I am planning on tuning myself and I think it possible with the interface of the EMU. With my limited experience I would recommend it.
See if you can get into contact with anothernord, he has more experience with it than me. He had it installed on a DIY turbo motor also.

I think you're going to want more functions in the EM rather than less.

Standalone vs Piggy back for the GReddy unit can be debated. It is not a drop in harness like most standalones however even full standalones can be run parallel with the factory ecu. Other manufactures like some VQ equipped Nissans will loose body harness functions with a standalone unit compared to running a parallel ecu or piggy back.. Subarus are much more forgiving..
But back to the matter at hand.

I'll most likely go with the GReddy emanage ultimate, like Huffer said it's better to have more functions than less. I could just run it a 5lbs and no tune but we all know 5lbs is no fun, granted 8-10 isnt much better but thats where I want to be. I say 10psi is safe with the 8.8:1 compression ratio.
