So yeah I was looking for parts and I stumbled across a 05-07 legacy rear differential with a 4.44 ratio. They want $150 for it. I want to know if it'll fit my 98 gt wagon, before ibuy it. Any help would be awsome.

The 98 GT has a 4.11 Final Drive. So it's a different ratio.
It most likely won't fit because of the axle differences, and my guess is that the 05-07 Legacy uses a multi-link rear suspension which means they likely have it mounted differently in the chassis.

For $150 it would be an interesting experiment to see what the physical differences are though.

It would help if we knew what transmission your 98LGT had. Automatic or Manual?

If its manual, you have a 4.11 FD, so no, it won't work. If it's an automatic, then it should be 4.44.

Is there a particular reason you want it?

Mine is a manual, ok now I know.. Lol.. It'll point less going to a longer ratio. Thanks for the info, learn something new everyday, guess I won't be buying it anymore. :smt023

It wouldn't just be pointless, it would fry your center diff.

You have to match ratios on a Subaru - the front diff is part of the transmission (well, it's connected) so its ratio has to be the same as the rear.

If you want an upgrade, the Forester XS (2003-2008) and Outback/Legacy GT (00-04) have 4.11 FD rear diffs with the Limited Slip feature.

Ah, yes, I knew I was missing a model. I'm not sure about the GD RS though...

Only the 00-01 RS's had vlsd "for sure." An expensive option for 98-99 I think. Anyways my buddy's 00 RS has one but at over 200k miles the diff has lost it's VLSD-ness. So I recommend getting the lowest mileage one possible. I think the more offroading the diff does the faster it'll burn out as well.

Apparently tracking a car can really fry it as well. Probably depends on how you "track" a car though...

I have a 05 lgt (4.11) rear diff/carrier on my 98lgt. It does have vlsd. Its direct bolt on uses the same axles. I'll probably have it for sale in the future because I found a great deal on a rear mechanical lsd diff from a gc8.

I would look for this years model for a vlsd diff since it will most likely have less mileage than the older 4.11vlsd model

Ok cool imma start looking for it cause I want the vlsd, thanks :-)
