F.N.G. with a 96 Outback

Hi everyone,

My name is Danny and I recently picked up a Mica Ruby 1996 Legacy Outback 2.2 M/T. It pops out of fourth and grinds third and fifth - unless I double-clutch. It also has a leak in the front transmission seal. I have my work cut out for me. I picked it up for a great deal, though, and look forward to fixing it up and being a part of the forum. Doubtless I will be digging through threads and asking questions since I am new to Subarus. Here she is as I bought her about a week ago:

A bit about me: I am originally from Tempe, AZ but am currently living in Lexington, KY. I am currently employed in the international sales department of a local manufacturing company and working on my MBA at night at UK. My other car is a 2005 Nissan Sentra SER Spec-v, but I plan on selling it as soon as I get the Outback all fixed up. Other than that, just ask. If any of you are in central Kentucky and see me driving around, feel free to honk, wave, flash, or flip me off - whichever feels right.

Nice car. That 2.2 won't give up but it sounds like you could use a new trans. Make sure you get one from an Outback or Forester or you'll have to swap out rear diffs due to the 4.44 final drive.

The Forester has the same final drive (Subaru noob haha)? Do you know which years are compatible? Originally I had just been looking for Outback transmissions, but now that I can broaden my search a bit, hopefully I can find a better deal!

Any 96-99 Outback trans should work - I'd stick with those unless you have access to a whole drivetrain from a Legacy.
The gearing is different in the Foresters too, so just be careful.
