i was just told by tires plus it would be 800$$ to replace my brakes and rotors on my 97 L. am i getting ripped? i haven't told them to fix it yet

Brakes and rotors are one of the easiest services you can perform, next to maybe an oil change and air filter. Do it yourself and you'll pay around $300 and that's for nice pads and rotors.

800 is expensive. 670 might be inline for what a dealer charges. If you want this done cheaply go to a place like value brakes, they do them for 100 per axle. If you need new rotors that will be extra.

Anything more than 500 for somebody else doing them is a rip-off, you could do the complete job for under 200 in parts, easy.

Just fronts? Just backs? Both? All new rotors or resurfacing the ones you have? What type pads, good ones, or the cheapest crap the place can find and mark up to rediculous prices? Is there anything else, like brake hoses or flushing the brake fluid also being done? What's the per hour labor rate at shops in your area?

For JUST front pads/rotors, that seems really high.

For that much, you can look into getting some really good brakes and installing them yourself.

Brakes are super easy. I did them for the first time myself. One bolt, a couple clips, boom, done. Get a cylinder pusher thing from an auto store though. Some people use a C clamp thing to push the pot back into place, but the part is only like $8. Chiltons/haynes will have it outlined for you. Took me just under 2 hours, and that was taking my time.

that dealer price isn't bad for actual subaru parts and labor.

you can do it yourself for a lot cheaper because you dont have to pay for labor. however i do recomend that you get subaru parts and at least something in the premium variety. you'll get sqealing/grinding/or possibly poor wear with something cheap.

but if you don't care about noises and chance of premature wear/overheated or warped rotors than get something cheaper.

800 a little much though i think.
