View Full Version : I have a funny noise too...

I noticed that after driving a while, there's a funny noise coming from the front end of the car. It isn't drivetrain related, since it does it independant of gear or enigne speed... It's also independant of the brakes, since it doesn't matter if I use the brakes or not (sound doesn't change when I hit the brakes).

It sounds like rubber rubbing against metal, but there isn't anything rubbing, that I can tell. CV boots look good, front and back. Sound does change when I steer from side to side, and it's only audible at slower speeds. If I weave back and forth, it changes, but only in pitch, not volume, and as soon as I center the wheel again, it goes exactly back to the way it was before. It's gradually getting louder.

Ideas? It's not a wheel bearing, a friend listened to it, and it's not the bearings. Brakes check out. Not a CV Boot. Nothing is rubbing, that I can tell. =\

Edit: I'd like to add, it's not the tires either, since I just rotated them, didn't change the sound at all. o.O

But, if it is the power steering, then wouldn't it keep making the sound when the car's stopped? It only makes the sound when moving.

I'll check the steering rack and front end links later when I get some free time.

not necessarily. Our old plymouth voyager makes P/S noise when it accelerates. But not when it's stopped, unless of course you're turning the wheel.

Mine doesn't do that, either. And no, PS belt is fine, as is the fluid levels. =\ Belts are fine, tight enough, and not glazed/melted.

Going to take a closer look at the front end links...

what comes to mind, you probably checked is the tires. is there any abnormal wear or whip on the tread? secound sounds like seals. wheel bearing seals or axles seals. other then that i dunno. i would have to hear it.
