Just curious, its kinda pouing out or Id go check it myself but the steering/suspension in general feels really sloppy in my 98 L wagon. Now, I recall that in my mitsubishi eclipse I did not have the stock sway bars in my model, but the next model up had them. I was wondering if the same would be true for the legacy l wagon?
In a small cache of parts I inherited I found a stock sway bar that probably came from one of my brothers 2nd gen outback wagons. If mine didnt come with one from the factory, then this one from my brothers outback would be almost like a factory upgrade right?

It should have them... just take a look underneath...
OB sway bars should be a little bigger, but I dont remember. I have a 02-03 GT bar on the front of my BD...

The L has the smallest sway bars. The GT has bigger front and rear. The Outback has the same front as a GT but a bigger rear.

The Brightons didn't even come with a rear sway bar... in some countries, the lower spec models have certain features removed or not included.
However, your 98 L wagon should have a rear sway bar and it should be 18mm. No different from your brothers.

My 95 had a 14mm rear sway. I doubt the newer ones were any bigger.
For upgrades, you can look at GT and Outback rear bars or aftermarket. IPD/Rallitek have a nice swaybar/endlink set that's reasonably priced.
I'm also selling my adjustable IPD bar & endlinks if you're looking for a nice rear upgrade: http://www.sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=25525
