What's up SL-i, this is my second Subaru and second Legacy Outback wagon. I picked up this BH from a dealer out in Ewing, NJ in the summer of 2012. She had about 90,000 miles and change on the clock when I drove it off the lot. This has been quite the journey with this car, and I have learned a great deal about what makes this car tick. This site has already been an invaluable tool as far as maintenance and knowledge goes, and I can't wait to learn even more!

Not very exciting, but it should get better!

Also, some of you may know me or have met me already! I was at the Long's Pond Meet in Lancaster, PA. (Jan 7, 2012)
Here's my old car for reference, the one that isn't Mr. Lancaster's

That onstar delete is kind of a pain.. I found that the radio module made it difficult to remove the stack, and the onstar cpu module had short cables. It was the first thing I did to the car, but so far the button panel is still in there as its filling up the hole.

Having those modules out, make it significantly easier to work in and around the stack and dashboard.

It looks like a pain, but I was able to track down a thread from subaruoutback.org with at least a few pictures detailing what needs to be removed. I'll tackle taking it out eventually. My buddy likes pressing all the buttons to see if he gets a response. Grrr lol

I'm digging the white and the 5 spoke wheels.
Thanks! They came with the car, but I don't think they ever came on the Outback as an option? Not sure.

Oh awesome! I didn't know you were on here! Great looking H6 :D
I actually joined after the meet last January so I could see everyone's pictures, then I went back to school and forgot I joined! But thank you! I'm browsing your journal and it's impressive, can't wait to see what you do with the new gauge cluster.

That's what I was thinking Huffer, I've never seen an Outback come with them. I thought either Baja or Forester. There's a guy down the street from me with an H6 and his has the five spokes with the little spokes in between that all of the H6's seem to come with (if that makes sense lol). But I like these wheels a lot better.

Yep, they're def Baja wheels - in 06 the Baja got those wheels in gunmetal. I have a set from my old wagon that I got as a trade. I like the look more - more truckish, purposeful, tough.

I have some mods for you that are super simple and make such a difference:

1. Honda Pilot rear wiper mod - see the DIY section
2. Fumoto Oil Drain valve - makes oil changes a cinch, and basically tool-less
3. Tint the windows? 35% minimum on the rear windows, go for at least 50% on the front doors.
4. JDM outer tail lights
5. SL-i.net decal - PM me I'll hook you up!

Thats clean! And a nice color combo!

Would you mind posting pics of the Yakima basket mounts? I have the basket, but for the life of me cant figure out the mounts, short of getting them from Yakima.

We have similar tastes my friend. Tint will be done over winter break most likely, just because it's pricey and I'll be working again. I'll certainly look into the Honda Pilot Wiper mod, and after doing an oil change I may just get that Fumoto valve. Anything to speed up the process is cool in my book. I want JDM tails so badly, they look so much cleaner than the USDM ones. I find them on eBay for around $100-$200 shipped so if I find a good deal I'll pick up a set. Are they plug and play? And PM will be sent in a second!

Thank you! And I don't have the Yakima Basket anymore, I sold it to a friend. However I'll look and see if I have any pictures or parts leftover from the basket. If I dont I'll ask her to snap some photos for me.

You say you'll do some little things (and some not so little things) to it, what all do you have in mind?

Well my Hella Supertones just arrived at my house, so I'll be installing those this weekend :D I'll also see how the car looks with plasti dipped wheels. Tint is coming eventually, with some other things here and there that I'll figure out as time goes on. I'm not good at planning, as seen in this post lol.

Thanks! I was flipping through the pictures I have from the meet, and there are two SVXs parked awkwardly by the entrance! Haha I think I met you though. But I'm so bad at remembering names and faces so please forgive me

So I was playing around in Photoshop and decided to see what the wagon would look like with tint and dipped wheels...here is the result:

I'm definitely thinking 35% for the fronts. I had 18% on my last BH and it was perfect. Slightly tough backing up, but the brake/reverse lights made it doable.

The Hella's were mounted and they are amazing. I giggled like a schoolgirl when I first honked them. I kept one stock horn to balance the high pitch of the Hellas and it's perfect. Install was super easy too
I mounted the Hellas in the stock horn mount for the BH and it worked like a charm

I think my tensioner bearing is going out, I started her up after a few days of sitting and it sounded like an angry cricket under the hood. This is apparently and issue for the EZ30 engines so I'll be looking at replacing that soon!

So I get back on campus from a short drive today, and as I park I press the button for the front sunroof to go down. Well one "ker-thunk" later the sunroof is closed, and now stays closed. I hear the motor working when I press the "open" switch, and the back sunroof opens without fuss. It sounds as if the front one slipped off the track :smt011 . I'm going out to try to see what happened and if anything could be done to remedy it. Not a huge problem, I'd rather this go than something major (even though I'd like nothing to break in the first place...) Anyone else have any issues with this?

Lancaster6

So I finally got around to plasti dipping my wheels over the weekend. I've never worked with plasti dip before this so the front wheels were subjected to my amateurness first. They came out alright, I'll be looking to redo them soon though. The back wheels, however, look like sex, and I was very pleased with how they came out lol. By the time it was finished the sun had gone down so I got an alright night shot, I hope to get out and take a few photos of the car soon!

Haha thanks! I do love my Outback. The H6 sits pretty high as it is, I'll probably leave it be since the days of offroading in an outback are behind me. Maybe one day I'll consider dropping it a little...not sure though.

That's funny, I thought the exact same thing when I stepped back to take a look at it. I agree 100%. I was worried that it would look weird on an OB when I bought it...so glad I went ahead and got it.

Noticed that I haven't updated this in a while! School has me busy again. This weekend I'm in the process of dismantling the dash to get the god awful Onstar module out. It was a pain in the ass finagling it out of the slot and trying to get all the random connectors unhooked, but I prevailed over the outdated and no longer supported GM trash. :blob2:

Pic of the dismantling in progress:

I also received some LEDs in the mail, those will be going into the instrument cluster tomorrow! In addition to the LEDs, I'll be eventually installing a Whiteline 20mm RSB. I wish it could have gone on the car sooner but due to some inattentiveness on both mine and the seller's part, I have a rear sway that will not fit the BH in my bedroom. I'll be getting the correct one soon! Lastly...I'll be receiving a small yet special part from a member here soon...

rkrenicki

That Onstar delete makes getting in and out of the dash so much easier. I was surprised how many parts there were to it when I finally got around to removing mine..

It's insane how much is jammed back there for that module. I had to remove the bezel that goes around the instrument gauges so I could shimmy the stack out. There's a small pile in the passenger foot well...iirc I have the Onstar faceplate, the weird metal box that goes behind that, and that flat piece that was bolted to the top of the heater controls out. Definitely got some more room to move around behind the radio now!

Lancaster6

Today I finished up the onstar delete, I have a nice empty pocket there for my sunglasses and other nonsense I didn't have space for before. In addition to that, I replaced the bearings in the idler/tensioner pulleys. Lastly, I pulled the instrument cluster out and put new blue LEDs in it. It certainly looks better than the green that was in there before!

Old on the left, new on the right.

I just replaced the lights in my instrument cluster, so the bulbs I needed for my 04 BH Outback were 2 T1.5-xHP bulbs and 4 WLED-x4 bulbs, and I got them from superbrightleds.com

Exactly! I won an EZ Lip, you know one of those overpriced garage door seals that people stick to their bumpers, and it came in the mail not too long ago. I'll throw it on one weekend and see how it looks. Also need to get a JDM doorstop to wedge in my sunroof to keep it open, since it no longer functions properly and I miss having it open

I recently received a very nice "Lancaster" badge from the one and only MrLancaster. Today I started to debadge the tailgate in preparation of the new badge. I still have to clay the tailgate as there is a very faint outline of the old badges. Its the exact same issue rkrenicki ran into, and probably many others have run into.

That's definitely a sexy looking badge if I do say so myself. I really wanted a Lancaster6 badge but I have never seen one of those for sale. Plus I got a good deal on this one, I guess it adds a "sleeper" effect haha.

Now that I think about it I think about it, am I going to have the only A-C Type front end out of all the BE/BHs at this SL-i meet?!

I spent a long time looking for a Lancaster 6 myself and never found one. Mine would have ended up as a Lancaster and Piston 6 if it were not for Yama having the RS30 one.

I don't think you will be the only one, but I think you might be in the minority, hah!

Try as I might, I could not find an RS30 or Lancaster6 badge anywhere. If it was not for Yama having it, I do not think I would have ever gotten my hands on one.

The Lancaster (non-6) badge is pretty hard too, I have found two in my searches over the months, one of which I bought and just recently sold. The other one was gold in color.

Thank you! I appreciate it! Its coming together slowly but surely. When Tanner sent me a text saying he'd sell the Lancaster badge to me I hopped on it pretty quickly. I've never seen one for sale before that and I wouldn't know when the next opportunity would present itself!

I'm actually surprised that these are so hard to find. I figure the badges would make some good profit for the japanese sellers...Pull some badges of a few wrecked Legacies, mark them up a bit, then spare a few dollars to ship em overseas. That's alright though, I like that they're hard to find. Makes them that much more unique!

I'm glad this one isn't gold. When held at the right angle it has a bit of a green sparkle to it. Looking at it straight on it looks black. Love it!

There are two badges separating me from full "Lancasterification." These two badges are the "Outback" badges on the side trim, seen in the picture below. (The LL Bean emblems are off as of now). According to rkrenicki and other sources, when these are popped off there are only indentations in the trim not holes that pass through. This leads me to my conundrum, do I pop them off and live with the divots underneath for a bit, then get them patched, or would it be fairly easy and asthetically pleasing with a bit of Bondo and some touch up paint (I'm thinking no on that option), or another route? I'm open to suggestions as I've currently hit a dead end.

I finally got to give it a bath today! I can't even remember when the last time it was clean, nor what shade of white it was. I also peeled the plasti dip off the wheels since it was looking pretty sore. Still getting used to the shiny wheels and car

Also, I won a free EZ Lip (you know, that DIY lip that that costs like $30 or something ridiculous like that) and I decided to stick it on for kicks and giggles. I don't know if I like it...part of me does, and the other part thinks it looks like crap. It may have to come off by the end of the weekend...lol

Thank you sir! Can't wait to see yours as well. She may be a bit dirtier though...found out that the area is in the crosshairs of another small snow storm thing this weekend. :smt009: It's better than a meteor hitting it though! I think there's a DIY car wash somewhere close to school so I may stop by that before heading down to the meet.

I also changed the oil today, and attempted to install a new rear sway bar. Didn't get far with the sway bar since the bolts just kept retightening themselves. There was also no room on the end of the bolt to stick an allen wrench so it wouldn't just spin. :smt017 Anyone have any tips?

I like what you've done with your OBK. Its coming along well.

Lancaster badge looks much cleaner IMO. The standard Outback badging makes the tailgate look cluttered. To add to that, here in Aus, we also have "symmetrical AWD" badges in addition to the "Outback H6 3.0" badging. Very messy....

I agree, that Lancaster badge really tidies up the tailgate. We don't have the AWD badges on the H6 but what we do have are a thousand LL Bean emblems festooned on what feels like every body panel. Those are off now

Today I tried to keep her as clean as possible while running some errands and getting ready for tomorrow's road trip. I can't wait to hit the road tomorrow and stretch the car's legs so to speak.

Sitting pretty with a full tank!

I recently bought a set of JDM HID headlights from fellow member and H6 owner, rkrenicki. We met up at the SLi Maryland meet and had them installed before people even started showing up! A large thank you to you sir, not only for the help but for taking the time to black out the reflector in the headlight housing to make them even safer for use on our LHD roads.

I finally got some pictures to show off the car a little!

Thanks Yama, I'm really trying to keep it as original as possible. If something JDM is going to be installed, its going to be something that was actually on the Lancaster.

The upcoming plans aren't super exciting, I'll start going at it again come late spring when the semester is over and I go back to working and making some more money. https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/03/spend_zps8aeed01agif-1.jpg

Upcoming plans between now and spring:
-Install Whiteline 20mm rear sway bar w/ Whiteline endlinks (when its warm out!! )
-Redo my Sirius radio install. I'm quite comfortable with ripping the center console apart now so I'd like to install an FM tuner and reroute the antennae wire since its just flopping about inside now.
-Window tint. I'm on the fence, since I like the fishbowl feel but at the same time I don't. It cuts down on glare too so that's a big reason for it as well. May go 25-35%, whichever my local tint establishment has.

-And finally drive it everywhere and enjoy the splendor that is my Outback/USDM Lancaster6.

Thank you! I totally agree, its such a cleaner look up front without those big amber reflectors.

I'm finally on spring break! And I had these waiting for me when I got home. The only downside to these Whiteline endlinks are that I'll have to cut them to size. Shouldn't be too big of an issue though. Contingent on warm weather I hope to get the rear sway installed sometime during the week.

Not much of an update, school has been pretty busy.
I just gave her a bath and a detail on the weekend. Don't worry, it rained the next day. :-( Oh well, I did get some wicked big paint chips filled on the bright side.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/04/DSC_0494_zps446884c5-1.jpg

Also, I have this little side project I've been tinkering with. I'm working on retrofitting my key w/ fob into the Volkswagen switchblade style fob. The mechanical side of things is perfect! But the electrical side is a bit botched at the moment.

This is pretty fun, I was able to get my Subaru key to fit in the fob as seen below
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/04/DSC_0501_zpscb33332f-1.jpg

I got excited over the course of the next couple pictures...
Desoldering the buttons from the fob's boards (this worked):
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/04/DSC_0496_zps5c37231d-1.jpg

Reattached VW fob's buttons to subaru fob...this worked and when test fitted in the VW fob the buttons on the fob lined up perfectly with the buttons on the board:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/04/DSC_0500_zps06523fbd-1.jpg

Then...disaster stuck. In the process of soldering wire to the subaru board, I got caught up in the wire and it not only detached the wire from the board, but it ripped the connector off of the circuit board as well! Fuck! Fuck! Bollocks! ARGHHH!!!!!! Welp, that's the end of that I guess. I need to find another 2005-06 Impreza/Forester fob to rip apart. Dammit all. Back to square one, but thankfully have some revisions to the process for round two.

Those are:
-An ultra fine tip for the soldering iron. Holy shit this board is tiny. I mean, it is a key fob circuit board, but the tiny-ness of the thing didn't dawn on me until I saw that even 22 gauge wire was way to massive for the project.
-From my tangent above, I'll need some even thinner gauge wire. Like, seriously small diameter, that is flexible enough to not worry about it interfering with other connectors millimeters away.

Now I'm off to cry and enjoy some quality cancer or other reproductive harm due to the use of a product known to the state of California to have those effects.

Maybe some grand theft auto to blow off some frustration.

This project is not over!

If it is just the keyless, have you thought about just swapping out your keyless module with that from a VW? Seems like it would be pretty simple...I've only ever worked with aftermarket ones before though.

Awesome idea though! I've always wanted one of those keys!

30 AWG Kynar "Wire Wrap" wire from Radio Shack works well for that sort of stuff.

Unfortunately, a big "fire stick" iron like what you have is just not delicate enough for something like that. The Hakko/Yihua irons are great for the price. http://www.ebay.com/itm/221209452414

I wish it was that easy! The buttons on the subaru fob are quite a bit smaller and really close together; too close for the buttons on the VW fob to make contact with them. I'll post a picture later of the difference in button sizes.

I figured this iron wasn't good enough for this sort of thing. Trying to maneuver it around things and into gaps was a challenge to say the least. I think my buddy has a soldering iron like that so maybe he'll let me use it for a bit :smt023

I'm saying take the box out of a VW, and wire that into the Subaru. Then just use the factory VW fob, no modification. Should basically be lock/ unlock wires, power, ands lights/horn. I could be wrong though, like I said my experience is in the aftermarket stuff.

Ohhhh okay, now I get what you're saying. I've never seen that done before, but I will look into it. I think VW uses a comfort control module to control the alarm system along with a host of other things. I'll compare the CCM with the subie's module, but I think I may stick to the fob modification, since I almost feel out of my league with this project! I can't imagine wiring in a CCM from a VW  haha

I wonder if you would have to? I know for me it is just lock and unlock that I use, the alarm is just there but more annoying than useful. Seems like you could wire just those features in? Like I said, I really dont knownmuch about it and I probably think these things are simpler than they really are, but if you make this work, I'd be interested to see how, no matter what way you do it!

So the key fob project is on hold for now. I have a new remote so I am ready to try again, I just need some time that I can use a buddy's soldering iron. It's a nice one rkrenicki, with adjustable temp and fine tip. Should've used that one from the start!

On another note, I decided to buy a little end-of-the-semester gift to myself. One of the things I've loved about the interior of the Lancaster is that badass Momo wheel...well I have one coming in the mail now! :smt007 Should be at the house by the time I move back in.

So after having some money saved up and set aside for the car, I've come up with a list of things I'd like to get done on the "Lancaster" over the course of this summer. Some of this stuff is just installing things I got as Christmas presents  others are slightly big projects, and lastly the other batch of plans are just small things to improve the overall appearance.

What I hope to do is:
-Tint: I'll have to look at the %'s the tint place I go to has, but I'm leaning towards 18-25% on the rears. Probably going to leave the fronts alone since I really don't want to be hassled for them.
-Momo swap w/ black leather steering wheel. Damn you tan interior with your chocolate colored steering wheel. At least the black steering wheel will still have the wood accents. And this sucker is in the mail so it'll be completed soon!
-Independent fog light mod. Simple yet good looking.
-Replace all interior lights with LEDs. May leave the radio and climate control alone though.
-Lower it using Legacy KYB struts. I don't want to slam it, and the H6 severely limits the lowering options, so just using the KYBs with stock springs will give it just enough of a drop to close up the monstrous wheel gap, while still being practical to get me to my kayaking spots.
-While I'm in the process of replacing the struts I'd like to get my 22mm Whiteline rear sway bar installed. I figure it's been in my room since Christmas so its about time it gets put on the car...

And that's about it. Pretty manageable list, and afterwards I think I'll be pretty happy with how it'll look. Of course I'll find something else that I want to do it though!

I got my black steering wheel in the mail today so after I got off work I replaced my boring, stock, brown colored wheel with this cool new black wheel with the airbag from an 03 WRX. I of course smacked my forehead on the top of the steering wheel as I was trying to get the nut loose.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/05/DSC_0672_zpsc705446f-1.jpg

And since the steering wheel came with a cruise control stalk from another Legacy, I didn't have to use my old finicky one. Momo wheel coolness plus functioning cruise control again!

I was reading about that a little while ago, actually. I luckily have at least 3 NAPAs in the area so hopefully one of them will be able to do it. I'll give them a call tomorrow! Do they need the paint from the dealership, for example, to put it into a spray can? Or do they do it all in the store?

EDIT: The more I research it, it seems as if that you just tell them your paint code and they take care of the rest. Cool!

I'll check them out too, thanks! Good to know about how much paint I can expect to use on it also. From the pics it looks like there's a shallow gouge or two that I'll have to fill after I sand all the old paint off.

I'll be painting it in my garage (with ventilation! lol) so hopefully I wont have any problems with pollen, leaves or other crap sticking to it during the painting process. It's relatively cool in there too.

Thanks man! I think I spoil this car more than I've spoiled past girlfriends  Whoops. And no worries! Hosting a meet has got to be quite a task so I understand. That was a good meet though! I planned a trip to Gettysburg with my dad for that weekend so I could stop by on the way home. It was a pleasure to meet you at the Ellicott City meet!

Today I stopped by my local NAPA and asked the guy about the touch up spray paint. He looked at me like I was crazy, and even after multiple explanations of what I was looking for and if anyone else in the area had the product he said "No, no one else has this around here and if they did it would be really expensive. Like $30 a can." I didn't think that was that outrageous of a price, but I said thank you and left. Tomorrow I'll stop by another, semi-local NAPA to see if they have any ideas. I can imagine that I'll get a similar response, however. I went on automotivetouchup.com and they do have the touch up spray paint! Downside: its $40 per can +shipping  . Turns out white frost pearl is a tricoat paint job, hence the higher price. Oh well. I was playing with some different shades of spray paint earlier and found one that is pretty similar to my paint. Tomorrow in the sun I'll compare it. I'll probably end up buying the proper paint though. This car is lucky I enjoy buying things for it!!

Finally got around to painting the spoiler! Next step is installation. The adhesive needs 24 hours to cure and retain 50% of its strength, and it has 100% strength after 72 hours. I'm currently working on getting at least 24 full hours to myself (or where I won't need the car). I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it happens soon.

Here's a pic of it resting on my hood to show how close the color matches up.

Does it glue only, or does it have a stud on each end as well? That color match looks great in the photo.. I cannot wait to see it on the car.

You know, I had the thought as I was leaving WBM.. that I should have brought that leveler switch I promised you with me.. I have been so scatterbrained with all the move stuff going on.

Lancaster6
06-14-2013, 11:09 PM
It had one of the studs in it when I received it; I decided to do the adhesive only route however. 1) I don't have the balls to drill into my tailgate  and 2) It didn't have any of the mounting hardware or templates with it. Rather than hope the holes I would be drilling would be accurate, I did some research on some 3M VHB adhesive tape. Preliminary tests reveal that it is VERY strong stuff.

Hah, I keep forgetting about that switch too! We'll get it sorted out after you're all settled in after the move. Worry about the important stuff for now!

I got it off amazon, its 3M VHB 4941 acrylic foam tape.

Do you think it would hold up for side skirts? I really don't have the balls to drill into my rockers, and some of the tab clips are broken on my skirts anyhow.

That stuff is epic strong. It's best to build up some sort of jig to hold your parts together until it fully cures. It unbonds if you pull the tape sideways for some reason, so cut off any over-hang.

Lancaster6

It is incredibly strong stuff. According to 3M they use it on the outside of skyscrapers. I stuck a bar to my ceiling in my basement with it, let it cure for two days (although it calls for a 3 day cure time), then grabbed onto it and hung from it. The tape did fail after a couple seconds, but hell, it held 155 lbs (for a second or so) with a strip about 1'' long by about 3/4'' wide!

Lancaster6
06-19-2013, 06:08 AM
No problem! It's pretty thin tape so just make sure where you stick it on the skirt makes direct contact with the car. Some of the curved surfaces of the spoiler are too far recessed and doesn't make contact with the hatch. Shouldn't be a problem for your application though.

Was it the tape that failed? Or was it the surface that it was attached to?

I know that I have issues in my old home with Command hooks, but it was not that the adhesive was failing, but that the paint on the walls was not able to hold the weight.

Lancaster6
06-19-2013, 10:02 PM
The tape itself "broke" in half. Some was still stuck to the ceiling, and the other piece was on the surface of the thing I was hanging from. It didn't slowly rip, it was like the first second was fine, then "pop" I was on my ass.

I can attest to the Command hooks, however. I had them in my bedroom and it ripped a decent amount of paint off when they fell off.

I had my Whiteline sway bar installed yesterday. I wanted to do it myself but bolts that didn't really look like bolts anymore made the patience run out. On the short ride to work today I noticed that it has firmed up the back end a bit more. Definitely worth it!

I have a week off of work for a family vacation, so while I'm enjoying the beaches of SW Florida and generally doing nothing, the adhesive will be curing on the spoiler.

After much deliberation, measuring, remeasuring, making sure everything was level, taping into place, and the like, the spoiler is FINALLY stuck on the hatch. It's been on there for about 20 minutes and it already feels pretty solid. I can't wait to see what a week will do...

And for the obligatory (albeit, crappy noisy and overexposed) pictures of the BH inside of the garage with her new bling. :smt029

So I was browsing ebay tonight and came across a set of JDM taillights. I gave him a lowball offer and he accepted (which I seriously doubted he'd do). So now I have a set of taillights coming to my house! Anyone who needs some JDM BH rear turn signals, keep your eyes on the classifieds soon, as I'll have a spare set.

Not a crazy update as its been a very busy semester, but I got the JDM center taillight garnish installed a little while ago. I also got some maintenance done on the car yesterday. Front/rear differential fluids were changed, changed the transmission fluid, and threw a new air filter in. New spark plugs are next on the list. Hopefully next weekend I'll be able to wash it and go take some new pictures of it.

I recently bought a Magnaflow 12256 muffler and Vibrant 12'' bottle style resonator and actually had them installed on the car within a reasonable amount of time. I had my local Meineke weld everything together for me and it came together quite nicely. I had the after cat silencer replaced with the resonator, with new 2.5'' piping from the resonator to the Magnaflow. My first impressions is that its pleasantly quiet when cruising, with no drone. Then it gets deep and screamy sounding when I really put my foot down.

I changed my username, so I'm not Lancaster6 instead of cglock25. Hooray for new names!

On a side note, my new General RT43's are pretty good in the snow for an all season tire. The Altimax HPs had me sliding into my own mailbox. These don't feel nearly as unpredictable, and when I decide to go to an empty snow covered parking lot, it's still easy to kick the back end out in a fabulous display of controlled automotive recklessness.

My only complaint I have with my wagon is with the ugly beige interior. But after browsing the classifieds I noticed that rkrenicki and muse are parting out an 04 Legacy wagon...with a grey interior. After a few PMs, I agree to take the interior in its entirety (minus seats and door cards) off of their hands.

Today I began taking the interior pieces out. So far, I have the A pillar trim, upper B pillar trim pieces, oh shit handles, and sun visors removed. I'm working my way towards the headliner, but I ran out of time before work today. Tomorrow is a day off so there should be some good progress!

This afternoon I made some significant progress towards the interior swap. I have all non-essential pieces of the interior taken out, including the headliner. By the end of the afternoon, I had a pile of trim pieces scattered around my driveway.

The running totals of things found behind/under various trim pieces include:
Dead Spiders: 6-7
Dead Stinkbugs: 2
Other dead insects: 3-4
Human grease that is believed to be from the previous owner: Too much

And for pics!

Just a teaser of some pics to come.

Today was D-Day for the interior swap, so after picking up my new grey carpet from Dan Perkins Subaru, I met up with rkrenicki to lay siege to the beige. We worked for a solid 8+ hours swapping over the dash, headliner, carpet, and other miscellaneous trim bits. There's still some work to be done, but the worst of the offending tan things are gone!

Better pictures will hopefully come tomorrow, as we ran out of daylight as we were installing the carpet.

Thanks guys! This is quite the project, but it's going to look phenomenal when it's all said and done.

Before work this morning I had about an hour and a half to clean the car out and install some more trim. As of now, the lower inner trim for the front seat is installed, the front seat window moles are in, and some lower dash trim pieces are installed. The center console should be installed tomorrow; hopefully it's time spent in the dishwasher will clean it up and get the seriously caked on mystery crud off.

-Clean Headliner
-Clean and replace sun visors
-Clean Sunroof control/map light
-Clean and install upper B pillar trim
-Clean lower B pillar trim
-Clean and install rear window moles
-Clean "oh shit" handles
-Install Upper C/D pillar trim
-Replace Seats
*Front-02/03 WRX Seats
*Rear-Black leather seat from Outback/Legacy
-Replace door cards with black leather cards
-Fix rear cargo privacy cover

*Black leather shift knob
*Door handles
*Either find or dye rear woofer trim panel
*Heated seat switch adapter for center console
*Passenger side cover for rear cargo area trim piece (I'll get a pic of that)

I think that's it! I'll update the list as I make progress.

Edit- or if you are coming down for the meet next month, see if the guy would trade your seats for these: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthr ... hlight=tsx (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2577446&highlight=tsx)

The spark plug job wasn't as bad as people make it out to be...but it was still a royal pain in the ass.

I'm also pretty sure that these plugs were in the car when it rolled off the assembly line in Indiana back in 2003, so here's what over 117,000 glorious miles can do to a nice set of NGK Iridiums.

Today was a step forward but also a step backwards in the war on beige.

I found a guy that was fairly local parting out a BE LGT, so I offered the buy the leather door cards off of him. For $60, I got all 4 cards plus the door handles. They looked fine, except for one which he claimed "could be put back together" because he had to take it apart to get it off the door. Well it turns out that he destroyed that card...breaking every plastic rivet that held the various pieces and upholstery together. Of course I didn't realize this after getting home, and of course its the driver's door card. Looks like he went for the pull, then pull harder approach to dismantling it, which ended in destruction. Needless to say I'm pissed, but I got one of the non-destroyed cards installed and it looks so good.

Lesson learned I guess, and further proof of the age old saying "if you want something done right, do it yourself." If anyone has/sees a black leather door card for a BE/BH driver's door for sale, let me know. :smt011

I can see if I can swing by the yard up here to see if they have one before the meet. I have not been there in a few months, but they generally have a number of 3rd gen cars, one of them is bound to have black leather. Most of them tend to be 2000-2002 cars, but for the door card that does not matter. (It does not help me with my seat situation however)

Lancaster6

If you would be able to take a look, I would be forever grateful. eBay will occasionally have a few door cards but they are all +$80 for one. If they're cheaper than that, they're normally beat to hell.

I've found that it's not as common to see the 03-04 models getting parted out...maybe the extra couple of years are saving them from getting written off when grandma mistakes the accelerator for the brake pedal, hah.

I acquired seat belt buckles for the incoming WRX seats, a new armrest, a piece off of a 2nd gen's privacy cover so I can temporarily fix mine, and a few various trim pieces and screws that I was missing. 98legwag also gave me my not destroyed driver's door card, so after a good cleaning that'll be on the car.

All that's left to do:

-Replace Seats
*Front-02/03 WRX Seats (hopefully VERY soon...my butt is still asleep from the 7 hour round trip drive in the car today)
*Rear-Black leather seat from Outback/Legacy
-Find miscellaneous black/grey trim pieces
*Either find or dye rear woofer trim panel
*Heated seat switch adapter for center console

Now we're here:

The interior needs to be cleaned again  but this is how it currently looks. I got my hands on a set of bugeye WRX seats and they really are super comfy. I also got my new door card installed. The last major item I need for the interior swap is a black leather rear seat for a BH, then it'll be pretty much finished!

Last I saw is that he was able to get them to physically mount in the car, but he still could not fold them down. Apparently there's quite a bit of fabrication involved in getting them to work, but I've never seen what the brackets look like.

i know they are generally more expensive but why not try to source JDM b4 seats, i had a set from a wagon and they did fit in the sedan(traded back seat with a wagon guy who had sedan seats). all the folding mechanisms were built into the seats. they look a bit better than wrx seats but are very close in support and bolster shape.

There's a set of rear WRX wagon seats in a local pick n' pull in my area. There a little dirty but that's about the worst of it. It's in central mass, so it'd be a bit of a hike for you, but you could always see if they'd ship them for you. It's called Amherst-Oakham Auto Recycling.

Thanks for the tip my friend. I may hold out for a set locally though, just to save some pennies on shipping. There's normally a couple WRXs being parted out somewhere in NJ with the rear seats being sold fairly cheap.

A set of black leather rear seats were finally acquired, thus bringing this interior swapping venture to a successful closure.

rkrenicki gave me a tip that a junkyard in Massachusetts had an Outback with a leather interior that was in great condition, so I made the 4.5 hour drive up to get my hands on the set. I also picked up a new-to-me center console with working rear cupholder as well as some other various trim pieces.

Going to pick up these seats also broke my previously held record for "longest distance travelled for a car part."
In 1st place: Black leather rear seats-Sam's Pull a Part, Worcester MA. 254 miles.
2nd: Dashboard, headliner, most interior bits; Uncasville, CT. 208 miles.
3rd: Various trim pieces/Door Card-Crazy Ray's, Mt. Airy, MD. 199 miles.
4th: OEM Grey Carpet, Milford, CT. 149 miles.
5th: WRX Seats, Bordentown, NJ. 42 miles.

Kind of sad to see it laid out like that.

Pics to come in the morning.

I've been thinking about that actually. I guess it's becoming more of a Frankencaster as time goes on.

The funny thing is that the JDM brown/tan interior doesn't bother me. I really like the plaid like pattern on the seats and door cards, and the good brown to beige ratio. But black interior will always be my number one choice.

The drivers seat is height adjustable, so my 5' 11'' self fits in nicely. The passenger sits higher, but I haven't had any complaints yet.

05-09-2014, 12:45 PM
My only worry about a Legacy suspension set up is whether or not the spring perch (is it even called that?) will clear my wheels. The stock Outback struts come super close as it is, which is why I've been looking at coilovers as a potential option.

Yamazaki
05-09-2014, 05:41 PM
Um, what? I'm not offering the S401 setup.....
You realize I have an H6 too, right? If the setup works on my car, there isn't any reason it wouldn't work on yours. My tires only rub because the Japanese fenders are crazy narrow. You won't have that problem.

Lancaster6
05-09-2014, 07:53 PM
Haha no I know you're not offering up the S401 suspension! I thought you were running legacy sized KYB struts on your H6?

rkrenicki
05-09-2014, 08:40 PM
His current H6 setup is the same as mine. Legacy KYBs with Outback springs. As we were talking about before, I do not rub at all with this setup, even with the narrower Legacy fenders as long as the camber is 0 or positive.

Lancaster6
05-09-2014, 08:54 PM
My query is whether or not the shorter strut will clear the wider WRX wheel with Outback sized tires. Stock Outback wheel is 6.5'' wide 48 offset, the WRX wheels are 8'' wide 53 offset, bringing the wheel intimately close to the strut, as seen below in my blurry and crappy pic. This stuff is new to me, so please forgive my ignorance. But it doesn't look like there's a whole lot of room in there.

rkrenicki
05-09-2014, 09:30 PM
That is right, I forgot you have 8" wide wheels where mine are 7". With the offsets, your wheel is 18mm closer to the strut than on my car.

Lancaster6
05-09-2014, 09:53 PM

Lancaster6

Surprisingly the ride quality hasn't been degraded all that much! It's definitely a bit harsher over large bumps, potholes, etc, but on regular Jersey roads it's not bad at all. I also haven't messed around with the damper adjustments just yet.

Of course this is all subjective...I thought that as soon as I would hit a small groove in the asphalt my pelvis and spine would be turned to dust. And my old suspension had 120k miles on it...but overall I'm very pleased with them!

Did a quick oil and air filter change on the ol' H6 today. I'm switching to Rotella T6 after hearing fellow Subaru owners, NA and forced induction folks alike, singing its praises.

I've heard various claims from the oil giving people crazy wicked power gains to the additional phosphorus/zinc and whatever keeping the internals in good order. While the former seems stupid, the latter definitely seems plausible. Maybe the car will sprout wings and allow me to fly over all the idiots on my drive to work tomorrow morning.

And side note...I have to jack the car up to change the oil now. #lowlife

So I've been hearing this clicking/popping/snapping/creaking sound coming from the front driver side wheel area for a little while now. After getting home from work tonight I took the wheel off and began to investigate the potential sources for this dreadful sound. As I suspected, the CV axle has some play and makes an audible thunk when moving it from side to side.

My extensive research into the matter led me to believe that this is in fact not normal! I ordered an OEM remanned axle and related hardware which will hopefully be here before Christmas so ol' soobs can go under the knife before I go on vacation and then back to work.

To top off my evening, I rotated the tires since I already had the jack and stands out.

Lancaster6

While waiting for my axle to show up I cleaned my IACV today in an effort to fix an occasional erratic idle on cold starts! I soaked it with gasoline and it flushed so much crap and grime out of it. No wonder idle would sometimes be pushing 2200+ rpms on cold starts...the valve that's attached to the shaft thing had so much carbon buildup that it would get stuck.

Reinstalled it and took it it for a test drive. Not only was the idle smooth as silk, but a slight hesitation on acceleration issue is gone as well. Hooray for cheap and easy fixes!

So how easy was it to remove CV axle? Did you remove 2 lower strut bolts or LCA?

Lancaster6
02-20-2015, 05:15 PM
It was extremely easy. I removed the castellated nut for the ball joint and dropped the control arm away from the hub. I didn't want to mess with the strut bolts and have to deal with realigning the car, especially since no one around me wants to align with cars on coilovers.

I stumbled upon a thread on NASIOC about a switchblade key fob kit that used a 2009 Legacy key fob module. I did some research and eventually figured that the 09 Legacy fob would work with my OEM Alpine alarm system and bought the parts for it. I was right! I got the kit assembled, the key cut, and now I have a clean looking flip key for less than $50. I'm certainly down with that.

I'm extremely happy to report that aside from commuter duty the Lancaster has a new responsibility; hound hauler! I adopted a retired racing greyhound over the weekend and he loves riding in the car. And due to wagon awesomeness I can easily put his crate in the hatch and strap it down feeling confident that he's safe.

Mods to come include a beautiful BFM and maybe some tints.

And a pic of my adopted grey:

Very nice. My neighbor only adopts former racing greyhounds. Its odd, the two she has now get along great with each other but not any other dogs.

That is quite the unamused, gimme my ball right now face he's got working there! I'm working on teaching my guy how to play with various toys. He's getting the hang of it but somehow the corner of my wooden coffee table always seems to be more appealing to gnaw on.

You know, I was really concerned that he would take too much interest in our Shih Tzu but he has gotten along with both him and my German Shepherd absolutely perfectly.

I've been putting off buying LEDs for all the interior lights for a while, but after superbrightleds had a promotion for 15% off I figured that I have waited long enough. I went ahead and purchased LEDs for every interior light: cargo light, dome light, map lights, glove box, puddle lights, illuminated ignition ring, you name it. I got them all installed and I seriously regret not doing this sooner!! I love how clean and modern it looks, and not to mention how insanely bright the interior gets now. The only bulbs I didn't replace are the vanity lights in the visor....I seriously have no clue how those will come out without breaking (anymore) plastic bits.

Well...it's been quite a long while since I've updated this thread. Some minor things have changed on the BH, but a fairly significant change has arrived on my stoop this afternoon. Stay tuned to see what unfolds. 780

Well, it's in! My JDM BFM has been installed and is working flawlessly. A huge thank you goes out to rkrenicki for all of his help. I've got some LEDs to put in the halos but that'll have to wait until after this potential hurricane rolls through.

Agh I've been slacking! Between work, a recent trip out to Seattle, and a non-functioning computer, I haven't done much car related things. That will change very soon though with some nice updated car pics.

In the meantime here's a picture from one of my new favorite places. I <3 you PNW. :smt055
