nevermind. i found it. it's on the aluminum plate on the left strut tower.
however, is there a way to find out what color primer was used? (so i don't get a different tint from behind)

I honestly don't think it matters that much. As long as you match up the paint you should be find. I used a funky gray primer to re-paint some stuff and with the paint on top it came out looking fine. (though I did use a primer made for silver cars so who knows...)

Check for a local "Sherwin Williams Automotive" in your phone book. They do rattle cans for $15 a pop. Plus you can get all your other paint supplies while your there.

primer too?
do i need any kind of something to make the paint/primer stick?
ok, look. when it comes time to do it, i'm gonna need a huge write-up, step-by-step.
how to sand/grind, how to prep, etc, etc.

After wet-sandind a portion of my hood I reached the primer, It was black. The color of the car in question was Wintergreen Metallic (light green) if that matters.

Is there much of a difference between using a spray gun and a spray can? I plan on changing the color of my hood. Also painting my bumper which is black.

Much of a difference as far as?????
With a spray can, the fan (Width of the spray) is smaller and more limited with pressure. With a paint gun, your fan can be dialed in or out as well as the amount of air pressure. HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) guns are easy to get used to, when you take your time as well.
However, you can paint a hood and bumper (prepped right and in a proper area) and it should come out "good", pending you go evenly and smooth with each coat. A lite wetsand might be in order when you clear tho.

Much of a difference in the outcome.
So you think a spray can will do the trick? Or would a spray gun be the better choice?

Spray can will work if you wet-sand 1000+ grit between each step.
Prime - Wetsand
Paint - Wetsand
Clear - Wetsand
Polish

Would paint from say "paintscratch.com" in a spray can have the sparkles that my factory paint does? Or?

Yes.. every paint manufacture that follows the industry OEM paint code system will produce identical looks..

Think a pint of paint would cover the top of the hood and bumper? Or would I need more?

depending on the color of your car (some are transparent which requires more paint) and what kind of finish (single stage, base/clear).

Know this is an older thread but thought I would ask for advice since you guys have most likely painted your cars by now.
I will most likely get my hood and outback bumper painted by an auto shop but was thinking about doing the black trim myself.
Any suggestions on a durable black paint in a can that will stick to the weird/durable plastic on the Outback bumpers? Its the same kind of material as the Sideskirts/lips I believe

This stuff works wonders. Its a "rubberizer" paint.
Originally developed for thermal/vibration/corrosion protection, eventually moved its way to the automotive market.
This is not a permanent solution. Plasti-dip does peel off if you rub it hard enough, however I have used this on Truck Bumpers, emblems, chrome wheels, mirrors, and all TRIM on various vehicles. Even the rubber moldings.
You can find a can for about $18 usually and the more coats you apply the more durable it is. They sell gloss and flat colors however the flat black looks identical to all OEM plastics.
All you have to do is just wash the items you wish to paint with water and soap and dry with alcohol pads/paper towel. Then go nuts!
Check out DIY on youtube.
If you are looking for a permanent finish for your trim then find some Krylon Fusion (formulated to bond to plastic)

Clean.. Sand. Clean. Spray. Dry. Done.

Thank you!
Are there any downsides to it?
For the permanent finish, i'm assuming it would seal it better but does it still chip off somewhat easy? Would it be better to leave it without the finish and just touch up spots here and there since this bumper is so close to the ground?
Here's the trim i'm talking about on my car, the only black part.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/aug12-1.jpg
I may also cover the grill i'm getting as this seems like a better option then the 99cent Walmart can the previous owner used to black it out.

When working with plastic
For old plastic, use an ammonia-based cleaner and wipe down to clean surface. If the plastic is new, wipe down with paint thinner for best results. Lightly sand glossy surface if previously painted and remove dust with a tack cloth. When dry, apply Krylon® Fusion for Plastic according to the directions on the can.
Its best to spray the entire trim instead of areas since the paint you use will never look the exact same as oem plastic.
Chipping off all stems back to bad prep work. if the item has been sanded properly to allow the surface to become porous then the bonding stage will adhere properly and you should have no issues with chipping or flaking off. \
Plastidip is really cheap, really easy to work with, clean up is a snap and you cant screw it up. It holds really well with just a quick alcohol wipe. Its been a few months now and my friends Toyota Tundra that sees only highway mileage has no had a single issue with his plasti-dipped grille/emblems/bumpers and he even power washes it :-D Although cleaning squished bugs off of it is a bit of a drag. They say that when cleaning plasti-dip you should use a rubberized cloth to prevent any fibers from cheap-o cloths sticking to the plastidip.
Again plasti-dip is not permanent and if you rub really really really hard to the point that your skin is burning from the friction then you will start peeling the dip. However this is not common.

Ohhhh I was under the impression that you meant to use the Krylon Fusion as a clear coat to cover the Plastidip, my mistake.
So basically the Plastidip isn't as permanent as the Krylon Fusion but cheaper and a rubberized paint, where the Krylon Fusion is more of a traditional paint that adheres to plastic really well?

You got it!
Krylon Fusion is permanent. Period!
Plasti-dip is not permanent and can be peeled off with a bit of force.
Go to it!

I've been using truck bed liner on plastic pieces with good success. I'm planning on doing my Forester's bumpers and things fairly soon. Durability should be pretty good, considering what it is.

I had the same idea! Well to Rhino-line it since its popular here in San Diego where the company is located. I just couldn't decide if I wanted to actually do it because I figured it would be hard to wash and keep looking clean. Also didn't think it would be as cheap. What are you using? Pictures?!

So you Line-x'd the grill too? How much did it cost you? You probably have a total but what about just one bumper since I'll only be doing about half of my bumper and maybe grill?

I did my front bumper plus grill for 170, rear bumper for 150, skirts for 50
