Okay so my car currently has a phase1 ej22 in it, come to find out the motor I got to replace it is a phase2 ej22. I admit Im still rather new to the subaru world, not complete noob but Im no jedi master yet either. As far as functionality/performance/ecomony whatever, whats beneficial to each motor? What downsides do they have?

I was told that in order to use the new motor in my car Id have to take my old heads and swap them over to use my original manifold and harness. I try to think outside of the box a little so I want to know what strengths and weakesses they both have. Tis the season to build a frankenstein :toothy10:

Read this will help you. To sum up, just the heads are different because phase 1 has HLA which has constant contact to the valves. I have both version of EJ22, phase 2 has more power and fun than phase 1. I would take phase 2 engine over phase 1 engine anyday so you must get the ECU to match the phase 2 heads.

Im looking at pulling the phase1 harness and tansferring it to the phase2 setup, and repinning the fuel injector connectors etc to match... Will I run into problems if I do so? And even if I dont run into issues will I lose some of the potential of the motor by keeping the phase 1 harness and such?

I saw your other post you have the full engine including intake, why can't you go back there and get the harness and ECU to have complete swap?
To ease your pain, just swap the phase 1 heads over the phase 2 engine and call it a day since your car already have original harness and ECU.
Repinning wiring harness? I can feel your pain already.

This is partially correct. 1996/1997 was the year they changed the lifter design for the valves to a solid setup instead of lash adjusters. Phase II EJ22 didn't come until '99. Phase II was a new block, new heads, new everything.

How much of the harness in the vehicle would have to be replaced? Right now im trying to figure out how to keep the car going which is why i went for another 2.2, i heard doin a full swap id need to replace all the wiring front to back o.o

For now im fine with swapping connectors as this was supposed to be my "crutch motor" to keep me going while i start a legit build to swap in later on. When that happens and i can afford to have the car off the road then ill be more likely to swap wiring and such. For now i need a motor i can swap in same day.

Phase 1 block ftw, dual port headers, easy for a wrx turbo swap..

Not all phase I EJ22s had dual ports. Only the ones up to that blurry line in 95/96.

They were all stock dual port on 95 legacies, then mix matched on 96. Not sure how it worked on Imprezas.

Lol well i have a 98 i think its a single port. We were talking about in the future tearing down the original motor and building it up and dropping it back in.. should i look for a 95/96 phase1 or look for a phase2? As i dont wanna pull apart the motor that gets me where i need to go, i prefer a project motor i can have on an engine stand and build over time.. i got pretty interested in a 2.2 block with 2.5 heads and boosting it (again down the road when i can afford all that is needed) hense why im trying to figure out what pros and cons meet each motor

For boosting you'd want another motor entirely, the dual port 2.2 heads would work if you don't want to buy 2.5, but the 2.2 motor itself shouldn't be pushed past 7psi.

Okay, that being said I dont plan on tracking the car. I just want something different, boost being preferable. I know that sounds kind of useless but Id imagine that having the turbo means Ill have the power when I need it. Maybe not in the 500-600 range but so long as I feel something when I step on it Im happy.

There's a video of a legacy 2.2 from flat four motor sports where they turbo it at 7 psi and take it out rally. Shows you what you need and stuff (if you have single port heads you need dual port)
