Three days ago I was driving down the highway and a wicked noise a' started. Seems to be a spun bearing but have not broken into it to find out. Not really interested in doing a rebuild on it because it seems to be about the same to get a donor. Fortunately I recently registered for the auto auctions so I will be going to try and get something from there this coming Monday.
I do not have the cash to buy a WRX and swap everything like I would like to do (that is unless something amazing happens at the auction) so I will be going a different route.
I would like to get a donor that has a 5mt so that I can do the AT/MT swap at the same time. Only problem is only donor with a 5mt is a 99 L so has EJ22 (116k). With that being said I was thinking I could swap my 2.5 heads on to make lower compression and make way for some boost? Obviously not much but would be a nice place holder until I purchased the swap I really wanted. Has anyone done this type of frankenmotor before? examples maybe?
Second is a 99 SUS with a EJ25D and AT (strangely enough also 116k) now this would be nice because unless the turbo makes sense I would like to have the power of the 2.5. Even though its not much its still noticeable and will be cheaper then the third option.
Third and final option is a 99 2.5rs with AT (85k). Auction house states that it runs and drives with good title but has some front end damage. From pictures it does not seem to be that bad. If this was in drivable condition then I will go for this so long as it stays within my price range. Then set the legacy aside and do a full build. If it is only good for parts then my question to all of you is, are there benefits to the EJ253? Would this be a better option then the EJ25D from the SUS?
Viewing for these vehicles is this Friday 11/9. I will get a better idea of what I am looking at then.
