What's this white crud behind the cam sprocket?

In process rebuilding my engine, opened up TB cover and saw this white crud behind the passenger's side cam sprocket. Anyone know what is it?

Corrosion? Most of the parts in the engine are aluminum.

Took it apart to install new HG, it doesn't look corroded internally.

That residue looks just like whats on my motor on that same side. My upper rad hose was leaking down and after the stuff dried it looks like that.

Its just corrosion. If you park your car for a few months it'll be all over your engine. It doesn't corrode inside because there's no oxygen inside the coolant passages.

It will corrode, but it takes a long time and the coolant needs to be converted to acid and that takes a lot of time and driving.

Externally is common and not something to get overly worried about. Just means you need to change your coolant more often and clean your motor a bit more.

When my car was parked for 2 years and I was building it slowly I noticed my engine was covered in white corrosion in no time so I started leaving a blanket on top of the engine and it stopped corroding.

Agree with your guys, definitely Aluminium corrosion. My alloy wheels also have this white spots when I don't clean them after a winter/ski season.
