So it will be sometime down the line, but I'd like to do a swap in my 93 legacy. I currently have a ej22 and I'd like to swap an ej25. What exactly would need to be done? This would be my first swap.

Depends, more info on your drive train is needed, manual or auto. Which ej25 do you want, and are you looking to do just the motor or the transmission too?

It's a manual, and I'm looking to do the motor and tranny. I was thinking of an EJ25 out of a 97-99 Outback.

Have fun with them headgaskets lol. I've had a 98 gt with an ej22e swap due to headgasket issues and an rs with the same swap because the dealer didn't wanna deal with the headgaskets

Yeah I think it was 01 that didn't have the head gasket issue. If you do the transmission you may need to swap the rear diff as well, unless you keep your transmission.

The EJ25D may not be able to swap right in since it's OBD2 & your car is an OBD1.

I would imagine itd be most beneficial to swap out harnesses/ecus too, which iirc thats no simple task, its not just the engine harness being swapped but everything. Since I already had an obd2 setup, I only had to make small changes to my wiring to swap from phase1 to phase2

Sounds like this might be more of a pain than I expected... I may rethink my options.

I would do a little research and see what kinda differences there are between the harnesses, I dont recall when subaru went to obd2 but if the 95 isnt, maybe look into a 95 2.5 and match harness layouts. Like I said, with mine it was a couple small adjustments.

If you know your way around a car it's not as hard as most people portray it to be. The wiring might be tough to understand but there are pages out there that tell you how to merge harnesses. I was going to have Iwire do my wiring until I realized how easy it is (and the fact that it will save me $600)

There was no 2.5L engine in '95. 96 was the first year.

And my '95 Outback was OBDII.

not all 95 are OBDI and even some 96's are OBDI...

I would say get a JDM WRX half cut! Like a version V or so. It's OBDI and everything should just bolt right in! I think it would be a blast! I like 2.5's, but if you are going to go through that much work, get something to have more fun with!

Hence why I said my '95 was, not all '95s. It's not a surefire thing, just getting a motor from a '95. I find it hard to believe that true MY96s weren't as it was required by the USDOT that they were. I'm sure the EJ25s all were though, as they were a new design.

The other odd thing is that my Outback was an early production date (August '94) and it was OBDII. Strange that later production models weren't.

To the OP - it may not be worth putting an EJ25 in for all the hassle and the minimal HP. EJ22s were much more reliable, stout engines than the EJ25s were. I'd live with what you have right now until you can get something newer with a good health EJ25 in it. Or even a turbo if you're power hungry...

If you need to redo every thing for OBDII Id really jump to the SOHC >2000 EJ25 (unless you really want the DOHC) or a 3.0 or turbo or something. Going to the 1999 and down EJ25D (or even the newer 2.5 N/A engines) Is kind of a waist if you looking for more power. If your EJ22 is about to die and you just want something else it will be a nice improvement.

Hey there, I have a 92 legacy wagon. I had aquired an EJ25D out of a 98 Outback. the swap was easy direct bolt in swaped over my sensors the stock ECU ran it no problem. The car had a little more power and the same gas milage so it was a good swap but not ideal. You have a really great platform with the EJ22. You can build a great N/A motor or if your not looking to run outragious amounts of boost you can turbo these motors no problem. I kn ow I'm coming into this post a little late, but do some research on your options. Subaru's are awesome, ther like LEGO"S you can build them any way you want.

Better late than never! and that's pretty cool that your obd1 ecu ran it no problem with you swapping sensors.

Ha yea I'd still be running that motor if the damn headgaskets didn't go lol. I was pretty impressed how easy everything dropped in and worked with no mods or fab. The one tip I have tho is change the plugs and wires before you put the motor in. The heads end up sitting really close to the frame rails. You would have to undo the motor mounts a tip the motor to replasce them.
