Brakes, or brake fluid.

Today I've noticed my brakes are really bad... I have to step on it ALL THE WAY.. I'm not sure why, but I checked the brake fluids, and it's dark in color, and I don't think it's full to it's fullest.. Might be dumb to say that... But After I parked I also noticed 2 brake discs aren't even hot, but the other 2 are.. I can't even turn without the brakes giving in, and me sliding... I need this answered ASAP.

Also, I really want a brake upgrade any suggestions? I know WRX brakes are good for sedans, but I need a specific brake to buy I'm really poor LOL so.. My budget for F/R brakes are about 200 and under.

It would probably be best to at least top off your brake fluid. When you step on the brakes, you're trying to compress the brake fluid, and since it doesn't compress, it is forced into any open areas, normally the brake cylinders. If your reservoir isn't completely full, the brake fluid will first try to fill the space in the reservoir before working to apply the brakes. That might be the big problem.

On another note, I don't believe your fluid should be dark. I believe mine sort of resembles a light yellowish oil. It could be time to flush your break fluid system and refill it. Just remember to bleed the air out completely, or you'll find yourself in a much worse braking situation than before.

Sounds like your calipers are pissing fluid. Don't mess around with brakes if you are not comfortable.. This statement right here is just unsafe! "I can't even turn without the brakes giving in, and me sliding."

So, it turns out... Fuck, I basically don't have the leggy for long, because supposedly from the pepboy techs, they found out that the person who sold it to me put some corrosive liquid in the brake fluids, it corroded every rubber part in the brake system... Supposedly calipers too... I don't know what to believe.

Hmm... considering brake fluid IS corrosive... I find it a little hard to believe that the previous owner put something MORE corrosive into your brake system causing your internal caliper seals to start leaking.


Sounds like he is pumping you full of brown stuff.

You might just be ready to replace/rebuild your calipers.

FWIW I have all four calipers from my 99 legacy sedan for cheap if you want them... no leaks. I think I even have a couple bottles of brand new prestone DOT 4 brake fluid that I could throw in.

Because they would be off the car though, I would recommend having the seals replaced. The kit for both front calipers is $25 from the dealership and close to the same for the rears.

If you really wanted to do it right, I could also install some speed bleeders for you at what ever the cost of the speedbleeders is.

Basically they have a one way valve on them so that with the bleeder screw screwed all the way in (closed), all you have to do is loosen it by 1/4 turn, put a hose from the bleeder down to a bottle to catch the fluid, then pump the brakes.

Normally when you bleed the brakes, you need one person pumping the brakes and the other person to close the bleeder screw while it is pumping out to make sure that no air gets sucked in through the bleeder.

With the one way valve, fluid only goes out of the bleeder, no air can come back in.

So you only need yourself to bleed the brakes instead of a second person.

It is REALLY handy especially for changing brake fluid down the road.
