BAD HEAD GASKET

I have another bad headgasket on my 1998 subaru legacy outback with the ej25d block after i replaced the gaskets the first time (felpro) I got 400 miles before i over heated it and I had a thread upo of the detailed story i had an overheat iddues with thermostats in it so i dont have a thermostat in it now but checking the coolant levels i found oil and im running water so there isnt the white stuff from the coolant on the oil cap and the oil level has been fluctuating for a while now so i have come to the conculsion of a head gasket failure so my question for the people of this amazing community is engine torque specs warpage specs everything for the ej25d black that you guys know for a fact is right i had a few different answers on youtube i got the torque to yield 22 55 back off 180 another 180 22 55 inside something like that and i also got told from a subaru mechanic himself they were not torque to yield so if you guys can help me and esspecially the gaskets if you took out the engine(i did last time) and how many miles it has been since your rebuild please and thank you guys/gals!

The machine shop that i take my engines to suggest that if your car overheated/bad headgasket, the heads should get resurfaced because there might be warpage somewhere on the head.

Don't go with Felpro... I did and had the same issue and also make sure you go with a multi layer steel gasket and NOT the graphite ones.

i used a multilayered steel gasket but it only lasted 400 miles i have no clue of what to do now and i think im even having the transmition go bad too im lost on what to do

Follow Subaru TQ specs and use Subaru Head Gaskets. I have a number of customers that has not had a problem. Also getting your heads suffaced is a must.

I was one of the individuals that was dooped with the graphite HG's. They looked great!, out of the box that is. The graphite gaskets turn into a gooey POS, and require a lot of cleaning with a razor blade and brake cleaner to get the surface prepped for the heads and HG.

I wanted to do a DIY on this when I tore the engine apart last week, but I never did manage to.

I took my heads in to get resurfaced, which costed me $300 with the HG (Victor Reinz)supplied by the machine shop ( $58/HG vs. $76 at the dealer). There was no warping, as I was told, just some minor pitting where I was possibly pushing gases into the coolant. There was .004 taken off of one, and .005 taken off the other.

I would recommend surfacing the block too, if you overheated the engine to some extent. But definitely do the heads, especially since your HG's are failing after 400 miles. Clearly that was an issue you did not rectify the first time around.!

Have the block surfaced is a waste of money. I talked to a couple different machine shops about it and they said the blocks never have warp damage, it's always the heads.

This is all good stuff to know. I just picked up a 98 GT wagon for 500 because it needs head gaskets.. and I also happen to have a mint set of 25D heads from a 98 forester with just over 100,xxx on them. The dealer here only wants 49 a piece for the gaskets.
