View Full Version : Use OEM sub harness to hook up aftermarket amp and sub(done)

Ive looked at every topic concerning the oem sub for the five pages in this section and didnt reach a definite answer so I would figure I would ask here.

I would like to put a sub in my car to replace the blown underseat one. I just bought an amp and sub combo(they run about 150 watts) from a friend for dirt cheap. I want to tap into the OEM harness for the OEM sub.

This is the sub and amp combo:

My thought is to buy the forward harness(http://ae64.com/Subwooffwdharness.htm) and just splice in longer wires to reach the amp. I would still(obviously) have to run the power from the battery to the amp with the fused line. I do believe I would have to get some sort of adapter to be able to attach the RCA cables as well. I would be buying an amp wiring kit like this one(http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product. ... gMethod=rr (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=14667122&findingMethod=rr)).

Can anybody tell me if I am doing something wrong and point me in the right direction. I really am against getting an aftermarket radio since mine is perfectly fine. Thank you

Thats all fine and dandy but you still need the existing Subaru factory subwoofer T-harness..

And then you have manage to convert the + / - speaker leads to RCA's to connect to your amp.

The link from ae64 is the harness on the oem sub side. Id take those wires and splice in a speaker to rca converter from scosche or whoever. I think that should do the trick. Right?

Ahh yes I missed that part..

Well you seem to have this under control.

So lets sum this up.

1) Run a standard fused power wire amp kit..
http://a248.e.akamai.net/pix.crutchfield.com/graphics/infolib/carlib/amp_install/amp_x1.jpg

2) Ground the amp to your trunk. (make sure you grind down the metal for a proper contact)
http://www.popularmechanics.com/cm/popularmechanics/images/LC/amp_ground_large.jpg

3) Run a 12 volt wire from your ignition into a this Voltage Regulator
---> This will step down 12 volts to 5 volts allowing your Subwoofer to receive the "turn on signal"
---> +5V Fixed-Voltage Regulator 7805

Connect the forward harness to this adapter

Connect the RCA to your amp.

You should be good.

In regard to the remote wire, Ive seen where people connect the wire to a fuse like "turn signal" and run it from there to the amp. Is this fine or would you advise against this?

Sure you can grab it from the turn signal but why bother with all that wire? A simple $1 regulator from radioshack and you're good to go.

I dont get the running it from the ignition part. Sorry for all the noobish questions....

Igintion Cylinder (Where the key goes in)

Tap the 12volt signal from the ON position.

Attach the 5 volt Regulator to the 1st post. The 2nd Post is the ground. The 3rd post is the 5 volt that goes to the amp.

That seems a little above my comfortable wiring ability. by tapping into the fuse box i mean sticking a wire into the connectors of a fuse that only is powered when the car is powered on. Like with the "turn signal" fuse example, they only come on when the car is on.

Ok well you do what you feel is comfortable.

I have doubts that the turn signal power wire is 5 volts. Its putting out 12 volts and drops down to 8 volts IIRC..

You need a 5 volt signal to turn the amp on. 12 volts can burn up depending.

If you still feel weird about wiring to ur igintion cylinder I still recommend the voltage regulator.. You can tap into the turn signal just send the 12volt tap to post 1 of the regulator. and post 3 to the 5v signal to the ampe. Post 2 is a common ground.

I ordered the fwd sub harness today so it should be here by Monday. Once I get that and my amp wiring kit, Ill see what all I still need. I may even compile some of this info for a diy writeup.

so there is a 12v constant that goes through to the OEM sub via the harness. I was thinking that I could use this as the remote on wire but to keep it from getting power when the car is off, I can put a switch in the sequence. By doing this, I would have the ability to turn on/off the sub.

Also, I picked up a Scosche amp wiring kit today and the harness should be in the mail soon. All that is left is the line out converter and possibly use the "voltage regulator" on this remote on line idea.

sure that will work you just have to step the voltage down to 5 volts.

I just ordered this line output converter. It has the remote on included with it. I hope that this is the last piece I need for this. Now I just have to wait for shipping.....

So here is my Scosche amp wiring kit:

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/12/20121205_211854-1.jpg

And today in the mail I recieved my sub forward harness:

I highly suggest this guy for stock Subaru wiring. Shipping was fast and it looks and feels high quality(www.ae64.com (http://www.ae64.com))

and this should be the last and final piece I need:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/12/converter-1.jpg

I just need to wait for it to get here in the mail. And I only have one more week left in the fall semester so Im hoping to get this all together during or before winter break.

So here is the XScorpion converter I got:

I went with soldering rather than crimping:

converter all hooked up:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/12/20121210_210626-1.jpg''

I will get some better pictures of the setup for you all tomorow....Oh and I believe I fixed the grounding issue.

Here is how the wiring on my amp looks:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/12/20121210_210642-1.jpg

I fixxed the grounding by attaching it to the rear strut bolts:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/12/20121210_2106481-1.jpg

And here is the final product:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/12/20121211_145622-1.jpg
Bungee corded for safety. haha

Specs:
-Bazooka CSW1004 10" sub
-Rockford Fosgate Punch 100 Amplifier
-Scosche 680 Watt Wiring Kit
-Xscorpion LCO12.2R Line Out Converter
-"Unknown Brand" Sealed Box

System pushes between 100-150 Watts. This is not a lot but the mixture of the premium stock speakers and the boxes characteristics makes the system sound very full.

Looking clean. I would sand a bit of paint off your floor and use a self tapping screw for a clean and proper ground.

I just used the rear strut bolts. It works so much better than where I had in the floor but I thought taking the paint off would help it.

Here is a quick video I made just to show it working:
http://s1234.photobucket.com/albums/ff4 ... 210149.mp4 (http://s1234.photobucket.com/albums/ff419/chrish8r/?action=view&current=20121210_210149.mp4)

My friend with a 1000 watt(so he says) Rockford Fosgate R/2 systems was jealous because mine sounded better than his(at 10% the power). I told him its all in the box. haha
