So after losing a 3rd motor, I called it quits on "Hornet" the GT-B... She has been sold to another member and will be taken care of in a proper way...

By accident, ags18 found a JDM GT-B getting parted out up in Vancouver BC. He wanted to get parts, I decided I wanted the car! It was re-ended and pushed into a truck's trailer hitch. It had a messed up rear cover that I'm going to fix , but the front cover if toast! I'll run it till I can afford another JDM cover. Apparently when a car is totaled in Canada, they cant re-build them like we can in the states. Kinda sad... So up in Canada, it's only a parts car anyway so the former owners are excited to know that it's going to live on again.

This shouldnt take near as long as the Pulsar. I just need to get some rocker sleeve's from the J/Y and She will start going back together.

And yes, it's just the beginning! :smt030

I had to look outside to make sure I wasnt just dreaming... It's still out there on my trailer!

My back hurts like hell, but thats what pain killers are for right?

I'm gonna get some more detailed pics today and also see if I can get the rock sleeves to start assembly. Still bummed that the one rain guard broke though :smt022 See if I can fix it.

For some reason we couldnt get it to roll, so I'm not sure why it's doing that. I pulled the brake pads hoping that would help, but did nothing.

I kinda wanna see what this twin turbo thing is all about. I got to feel the S401, but I have a feeling that car is much more refined then a regular old 2nd gen TT... I truly cant wait to drive this!

Thanks for coming by tonight and helping my dad and I! It's fun to have fellow motor heads be just as excited about your car as you are!

And thanks everyone else! I cant stop fiddling with it! I keep finding things new! I got a lot done today! It's now in the shop and I worked on getting the motor back together. I got the dash lights on and even cracked the motor over a couple times.

Also figure out what some of the goodies are that I didnt know about. ags18 helped me figure out that I have a set of Advans on it! Kinda cool to have a set of spendy wheels for the first time ever!

It's light color, but it's got some stick on piece's that are not normal. I like it, but I just have never seen it before. Would like to know if it's a factory option they had, or just pure aftermarket. I'll get some more detailed pics of it. I'm loving this stuff!

Haven't seen that trim before.

The cable is for the OEM exhaust valve that opens at higher speeds, like the ones on Aston Martins... you have an aftermarket muffler so they cut it off, mines tucked up under the bumper.

So much cool stuff on that car. Love the interior. I have the digital hvac but missing all the stuff for it. So yes we hate you :smt010 lol

Also I like how you guys think outside the box and went across the border to get a jdm car. Most of us here buy jdm pieces/parts and you guys have the whole thing!!! :smt023

Too bad canada is too far for me or else I would tow the car back without cutting it
Yeah, it was iffy if they would have let me in with it not cut in half. :smt009

If you are in north Cali, it's not really that much of a drive.

You're going to weld it back together? That's just so wrong! Ah well, you gotta do what you gotta do :( (bloody laws)

Also, IB4 "So got it running, went for a test drive, popped the big end bearings"

I had my GTB, which has 118,000km on the clock, and was but 9 years old, for 3 months before it ran the bearings. It's a problem EJ20R's are notorious for, so do please budget for a rebuild!!! If you don't, you'll be hurtin...

Not trying to be negative, just giving you the heads up! Basically run it on ONLY the HIGHEST octane possible for you to attain, and make sure it's run on bloody good oil, that's changed every 5000km. Castrol edge 10w-60 is a good example, it gives excellent protection when hot, which is when they love to blow.

If you look after it, it will look after you. If you don't look after it, and you don't feed it 98+ RON, then you'll be importing an EJ207 short block from japan. (JDM yo, EJ25's are not an option for a BG TT!)

Sorry to be the party pooper! But look at what my wagon became after i dropped the STi motor in, it's a fucking beast, and rightly named. Normally I'd be pushing for single, but i understand the ultimate raraty that is TT in the states, and the novelty of it is therefore likely to never rub off. There are some things you can do to improve them, namely, look into getting a zerosport sequential controller! Great bit of kit that lets you customise the crossover point to suit your driving style, rather than modify your driving style to suit the TT!

I'm so glad to hear you managed to pick up a GTB, welcome to the club! Also, those woodgrain trims... I've never seen before. But i love them! so 90's japanese :D

Yeah, I forgot to tell you dead91silvia, that car says "Premium" on the fuel filler flap. And it isn't the premium you can buy at the regular gas stations here....

I know people that ran the GT-Bs in Japan with low grade gas (hell, my wife and I did with her GT-B ltd), so you can get away with using 93 here. But I'd just get it re-tuned if you can.

Reuben... would a standalone and a proper tune for 93 or 91 octane not solve these issues? I can understand the lubrication dangers but I am just put off when I see all sorts of JDM flavors turning out big numbers with N/A grade fuels and then reading your post. Granted none of them have been TT but that shouldn't be the only factor?

Good luck tuning a TT ECU!! Do a bit of research on em mate. It's possible with a piggyback, like an Apexi AVC-R, they can also change the crossover point too, i think.

Lucky for you, 91 and 93 stateside is actually very high octane. Highest we get here is 98 RON, but that's on par with around the 91-93 MON. Basically you should be ok as long as you keep it running on 91.

Really? Even though the low grade in Japan has a US octane rating of 93 and the GT-B says to run premium (US 95.5)?
If that's true, then can we run our cars that require 91 on 87 instead? Or am I way off base here?

LOL... Well, the guy I got it from ran 94oct in it and thats also what he runs in his Pulsar GTIR. I knew it was going to need super.

I do wonder though, what about getting different heat range plugs, like say what is in the USDM WRX?

Also, I have always and always will run full synthetic oil in my turbo cars. Ether Castrol or Royal Purple.

thats not entierely true.

I've read reports that shell 87 has better protection against knock then other brands of 91 even.

I cannot tell for sure but what I do know is that he drove the piss out of his GTB and I have driven it myself and even with the shell 91 I never felt any knock and it was still faster then my BP

I love how all the talk is already on tuning and this thing up and running! :P Cant wait for that day! It will certainly create quite the wagon mafia of Subies over here in the Pac Northwest. :smt028

Also, its not like this thing will be a daily driver seeing 50, 75, 100 miles a day...a full tank of 91-93 should serve it fine and there are octane boosters out there for $4-$7 per bottle if it needs to be bumped up a bit.

You can't toss the TT ECU. There's only one ECU that can run an EJ20R, and that's an EJ20R ECU. Any swap with STi gear (and go with V3/4 STi, it's a direct plug and play) will mean you have to go single turbo, or twin parallel. There's simply no point in parallel, so one may as well just go all V3 STi like I have, and then you miss the raraty of having a TT GTB stateside.

I honestly think STi ECU and single turbo is the best way to go, but it's up to dead to descide if he's keeping TT or not.

Dead91silvia
12-08-2012, 10:59 AM
I havent decided if I wanna keep the TT or not. I would rather consistent power over being able to say I have a TT. The people I got it from told me about the valley of death with the power, but they also said it was still fun to drive.

It's been so long since I had a turbo, I'm sure the TT will be fine for a while. At the same time I still have my Pulsar so when I finally get a driveline for that stupid thing I'm sure I'll beat that more the the Leggy...

Reuben is talking sense. Try out the TT setup first. If you don't like it, then you can always change it to a US postal wagon with a turbo. Or you could ask hanvonaxion what he did. His GT-B has very little VoD and drives very different from my wife's former GT-B ltd.

Well, the way I see it is this is one reason JDM cars dont have DOT approval for the USA. Personally I like having the extra brace for safety reasons.

Also it's kinda funny... The JDM car has NO rust proofing inside the rockers, at all! Now the USDM one has this sticky as hell gel type stuff on the inside of the rockers. We dont have any problems with rust over here, but then again few cars over here have that problem at all.

Oh! I'm giving myself a little brake right now. Just did another 2 hours of welding on the floor pan. This is what takes so much time. I have about 90% of it done. Now I need to remove the exhaust and weld the underside of the trans tunnel.

The one thing I hate doing is grinding. I'll wait to do that to tonight. As soon as this is all done I'll be at a slight road block till I get some more mud, I ran out working on the Volvo a couple weeks ago. As soon as the floor and inner rockers are mudded, I'll shoot some paint and then lay out some Dynamat.

I'll have more pics to post later.

Yamazaki, how much do they salt the roads in Japan? Over here, we don't have the rust issues, since, well, we don't salt our roads, whatsoever. The only places that have anything, are in the south island, and down here we grit, instead of salt. So everything gets fucking filthy with dust, but I'd rather that than rust!!!

Dead91silvia
12-11-2012, 03:21 AM
I dont know if they use salt or not, but I know my Pulsar had a bit more rust then I would have expected from a car that was only 22 years old. Might just be that it was a coastline car also, we have that problem with cars from the coast. I have seen some REALLY bad one from the islands! The GT-B has 0% rust BTW... :smt023

On a further note... I have about 95% of the welding done and about about 85% of the grinding done! :smt026 It's getting a little late to be grinding and the last bit of welding, well... that has to do with something other then the cuts...

Tomorrow I should be painting/undercoating the bottom of the floor pan. That also means that I can re-install the exhaust, driveline, and heat shield.

So over time, big ruts and grooves for the wheels form in the ice/snow that's built up. It was a complete pain to drive in the Cappuccino during that time because it was too narrow to fit in the grooves made by all the other cars...
And the roads freeze/refreeze a lot, so they get giant pot holes and cracking. Which is why the roads outside the cities suck big hairy goat balls.

Only reason I say that is this car has no passenger aigbag, side bags, and the front and rear bumper supports are a joke.

As for the seatbelts and that stupid little thing for the rear door, we have those.

Also, I'll take a look to see if it has the side impact bars. If they do, then they are the same as USDM.

Also, if you're worried about safety, rest assured the JDM's had better airbag tech, and little things like pre-tensioned belts.

Not safe enough to get a TT version (hell...single T version) over here. :(

US Government + "Big 3" = <3 forever though. Nothing we can do about it. Just take a look at what JDMland was producing in the 80's-late 90's (case n point...GTB) and how they didnt make it stateside! Took whoever was involved to FINALLY bring a WRX into here untill 2002 for godsakes.

:Rant over:

Happy with the progress on the GTB Robin. I'll be back by soon to take a peak and lend a hand if needed. :smt023

I didnt feel sleepy at all when it was 11:30pm, so what do I do? Work on my car!

100% of the welding and grinding is done! I even got the underside of the floor pan undercoated and everything!
Now it's just body work and paint on the rockers and pillars.

I do have a pic of the floor pan, but it's on my phone... haha... I'll post it later.

I did get to install the driveline and the Exhaust though! I even polished the exhaust and she's look'n hawt!

I can't remember what state my car was in when you drove it, I don't think I'd swapped the centre pipe yet.

Biggest improvement for VOD was the catless centre pipe, but that was mated to aftermarket ECU so it was the combination really. The sequential controller helps in some way but it doesn't do what a lot people think it does - it's a fun gadget and a cheap boost gauge but not a solution to VOD.

So I can't really recommend mods at all because you definitely don't want to swap to an aftermarket ECU because of your fuel quality issue, they're even more aggressive, and unless you're running an AFM/knock meter I wouldn't suggest deleting cats either. So just run it stock and see how you like it, run it into the ground before going single. You've got a job ahead of you with those vacuum hoses and solenoid box anyway! Oh man...

I might look into Stand Alone a little later if it really is a problem. When I put the exhaust back on, I did notice, I just have an axle back. I figured I might have my friend at and exhaust shop build me a mid-pipe and see what happens.

A while back I saw a MINES ECU on Ebay for like $300. I do have a station about 20sih miles away that has 98, 100, and 110 octane fuel. So I'm not so worried...

Thanks!

So does that mean the mid pipe from a GC8 would work if I found one? I'm kinda excited to have this car sound like it has balls. I would have done an exhaust on the BD but with it being an auto and non turbo, I feel like I would be a poser.. :smt005

NOEP.

Look again, you've torn up the carpet, you've seen the ECU you have, and you should also see that it's what is known as a "Three-Plug". Threeplugs are single turbo, and tt manual for 96-98. tt Auto for 96-98, run the "One-Plug", ECU, with intergrated TCU. They are basically useless, that is literally the first aftermarket thing i have seen for the one plug, up until this point i though the one plug loom was a one time abomination that you could not do anything with. Nobody to my knowledge has single turbo'd a one plug legacy, due to there actually being no single turbo ECU's that plug in, and bugger all information on the internet out there. You would essentially have to re-loom a one plug legacy to single convert it. Be thankful you have the 3-plug ECU, STi ecu's plug directly in, they have almost identical pinouts. The only difference between TT threeplug and ST threeplug, are the TT has 4 ignitioon wires, not two (ST runs wasted spark), and the boost control solenoid pin is in a different location. That's it, that's all.

Also, the only o2 sensor should be on the exhaust manifold, prior to the primary turbo. The sensor on the cat is the cat temp sensor, it has one job, turning a light on the dash to say the cat is too hot. Remove the cat, remove the sensor, move on and forget it was ever there. To veryfy this, measure it, o2 sensors are about 3 times fatter than the cat temp sensors, the cat temp is less than a CM wide.

Don't forget also that your ECU is only OBD-I, not OBD-II like the same year US models. The ECU is a rather simple number cruncher, it doesn't do much, and it cares not for cat converters. It doesn't know if you don't have the petrol cap in, and doesn't care, it doesn't know if it has a cat, nor does it care. All it knows is if it's solenoids are plugged in, and how much petrol to inject.

Here's a list of error codes btw, it's quite a bit smaller than an OBD-II list...

11 Crank angle sensor
12 Starter switch
13 Cam angle sensor
21 Water temperature sensor
22 Knock sensor
23 Air flow sensor
24 ISC valve
31 Throttle position sensor
32 O2 sensor
33 Speed sensor
38 AT torque down request
44 Supercharging oppression output
45 Atmospheric pressure sensor/Absolute pressure change solenoid
61 Inhalation valve solenoid
62 Exhaust valve solenoid (vacuum)
63 Supercharging pressure relief valve solenoid
64 Secondary waste gate solenoid
65 Differential pressure sensor
66 Sequential turbo system <--- Pray you do not get this error. Basically it can mean about 20 different things, and the flow chart to diagnose it is two pages long. It is essentially the code you will get if even ONE vac line is plugged in wrong. Its code 66(6)
67 Exhaust valve solenoid (positive pressure)
68 Exhaust valve duty solenoid

That ECU is for an auto, you want a 4G and I can get you one a lot cheaper ATM, though like I said before I wouldn't really recommend it... I'd see how you go once you've got it running, you never know what problems you might run into.

That's actually a temp sensor on the centre pipe for the second cat, you can remove it with no CEL, no problem. The only time it may be an issue is if your MAF starts playing up (or you're running way it won't throw a code like it should.

You should probably make sure that the motor runs before you start looking at ecu's. Also ask for pics of the engine bay to figure out where some of the vacuum lines to. If they are anything like a Toyota 3.0 v6, one crossed vacuum line will cause a huge headache in driveability.

Hans, how much did that sell for? I dont have the cluster, ebrake handle, cup holder, or ash tray pieces. I dont see the long door moldings that I have though.

I wonder how many different kits they had over there.

My bad, these are longer than normal but yours go right along the door. It's crazy how many different kits there are around, just shows how many of these things sold. The starting bid was about $100 from memory.

I do have one spot I might have to re-mud, I just dont want to... LOL...

I dont paint enough to even justify a new cup yet... haha... this was also my primer gun. When I did the Pulsar, I had it higher off the ground. It wont matter so much with this car, it will have rocker covers/skirts on for it's whole life anyway.

I'm hoping that I have enough DBC left over from my BD to paint her up, but I dont think I do. Thats ok though, I need to paint the rear bumper for the BD anyway.

This project has easily gone faster than any other project of yours that I've seen. Nothing is stopping you from getting the GT-B on the streets is it?

Pretty much no one or nothing will be stopping me!

I just got the wiring laid out and just about read to solder. The doors and pillar/roof line trim are installed along with the door rubbers. I'm about to start wiring and figure I can maybe have it done tonight and I'm going to talk to an old high school buddy and see if his offer stands for using his flaring tools for the hard lines. After that, it's putting the interior together (a couple ours of work) and then putting the motor back together. Realistically if I stay of my laptop and stop fooling around, I could have this car ready to start and drive at the end of the week... Less a window... No money for that as of yet...

Mission: To be done with all things having to do with the cuts buy the end of the week. End of the months, first drive... We will see. :smt023

90% of the work I do is mechanical, but I do have a degree in Autobody repair and refinishing. I just dont like it as much as mechanical work.

This is true, but also the Pulsar was much harder due to the fact that I had to cut the after it had already been done once and what not. But yeah, I learned a TON with the Pulsar that made the GT-B that much easier for sure!

There are a couple things I still have yet to do. I need to buy a file for a couple of the clip holes in the rockers, but it's no big deal. I'm gonna get a hold of one of my friends to see if I can get his flaring tool and get the hard lines done also. As soon as thats done, I'm in the home stretch! It's just down to the motor and hooking everything back up.

Actually... how bad is your cover now? I'm genuinely curious what is "not fixable" to someone of your skill.

If those thousands of kilometers aren't in a straight line maybe. But going at the same speed in the same direction for hours on end.... your legs start to ache. I found that out with the wife's former GT-B ltd and my S401 on roadtrips across Japan. Everything that makes the car fun (acceleration/handling) is negated by the roadtrip. That's where the North American cars are more comfortable.

Yakmazaki hit just about every point, but missed one... Cruise keeps me out of trouble. I tend to go too fast sometimes and have had a number of speeding tickets in my time. So I'll set it at a speed I know I would get pulled over for.

I remember driving my Silvia on a 300 miles road trip and every now and then I would look at the speedo and once I was doing 95 mph and didnt realize it, all because I didnt have cruise.

On my way back from classes one day, I was in the afternoon traffic flow. I looked down and I was doing 90. Then I looked behind me and it was a police cruiser. But the good part was that I was just keeping up with the flow of traffic. It was a little nerve-racking.

nikolaus.conrad

I did 90 on a good portion of the Massachusetts through way on the way to the Rhode Island meet; keeping up with traffic and passing a car here or there.

Well... My dad took over the shop with wood working for the last 2 and a half weeks and it's been a pain! Cant do anything because there is just no space and also sawdust every where so working on the motor was not an option.

I did however decide to start working on the side skirts. Got a lot done tonight and they will be ready for primer tomorrow.

Lots of damage, but looks like someone was trying to fix them at some point and added a bit of fiberglass to the back side's.

Dead91silvia

The car came from Japan just like I got it. Only change was the tires.

I think they are the same as USDM so if I decide to put them no my BD, I'll just used the ones off of my BD. They are not in the best shape anymore (leg keeps catching on the top of the driver one). It does make the car look much lower, without going lower so thats why I kinda like them.

I need to spend some time on the Wagon, but I havent had the time with work and thats a good thing. I have needed the work and also my dad has been using the shop for a big project, but I'm planing to drive it by the March.

Well, I got the hood up on the GT-B today.... I'm still on eastern time from being over in Maryland, so I was up at like 4am.. haha.

I need to get some more fuel line and thats all done. I did have enough till I used some on the Pulsar. I'm still working on the vacuum line also.

Oil pressure line still is a mystery to me. I know it was hooked up, but I still for the life of me cant figure out where!

I pulled the plug for the fuel pump (couldnt figure out where the fuse was... haha) so I could do some testing. Everything seems to work great! Rolled the windows down, checked all the wipers, HVAC, dash lights, turn signals, and such. I cracked it over a big to see if it would build oil pressure and leak where the line is supposed to go, but nothing. Also found out that my starter might be a on it's way out. err.... Thinking of changing it out, I know I have another some where, just dont want it to go out AFTER I install the intercooler.

So anyway, I got a little done and I have set a goal to drive by the end of March and I feel that is totally doable! Only major thing I need is a windshield installed. It's all the little stupid stuff thats slowing me down!

I got 90% of the vacuum lines figured out! Amazingly enough, the box with all the vac lines are numbered! :smt026

Fuel lines are also finished.

Well, I have had more time then I thought I would have.

I figured out just about all the vacuum lines. Cleaned, re-sealed the PS pump, and installed. Repaired and installed coolant tank and lines. Installed and cleaned intercooler...

And... I started her up! She ran good for the first couple minutes, but then started to have a miss... :smt017 Still not coolant in it since I dont have a lower hose for the radiator yet.

Vacuum box... Go figure... all the lines were numbered... haha!!!! :smt005 Made that easy!

Found the miss! The connector for coil pack #1 had a broke clip. Popped it back on and she runs like a champ! I hung out with Red85celica today and we messed around with the car for a bit and thought the pack might have just died, but it was just the connector. Something to fix, but not a HG!

So I took her for a drive around the block! haha!!! Good times! No front bumper or window. My eyes were watering!
