Okay so i now have a 99, technically phase2 motor in my 98 wagon. Tried to start it finally but wouldnt go, i scanned the cel and it came up with the cps. Now, the connector from the old harness fits the sensor just fine but im now getting a code for it. Could there be a difference in voltage or just a bad sensor on the motor?

The pins might also be different. Ran into that with an aftermarket sensor I got once.

Then again, it might be bad also... And also what ECU are you running? That might also be a problem, but I'm not sure.

Ill chexk the other harness and see if the connectors are the same or not. Also turns out my friends forester just died yesterday. He scanned it and came up with cps too. *insert cruel irony laugh here*

Looks like one of you can get a new sensor and see if it fixes both cars! LOL

That doesnt sound like a bad idea honestly Ill have to check tomoow to see if theyre the same part number. I checked with the confusion of the 98 ecu and the 99 motor, both the 98/99 have the same part number for the cps. Ill most likely be picking that up tomorrow around noontime. Interestingly enough, when I scanned it, I only came up with the one code... nothing for misfires or more specifically o2 sensors (theres no exhaust on the car yet, sensors arent plugged in) or even the egr delete. Well perhaps after it starts murphys law will come into effect

If you have a Phase II 2.5 motor in a Phase I 2.5 car, they are not the same. 1999 cars still had a Phase I 2.5 motor in Outbacks. Some of the other cars had Phase II motors, but not the 2.5 cars.

I dont have an outback, I went from phase1 ej22 to phase2 ej22

Okay so I could be mistaken, but in order to get the cam position sensor out it almost looks like Ill have to remove the valve cover... theres interference trying to get the sensor out. I saw two bolts near the sensor it almseems like it was installed in a removable bracket, with another 3rd bolt inside the timing cover. Will I be able to get the sensor out this way? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

If it was a Phase I 2.5, I would know... LOL... Even at that, those Phase II T-covers are pretty easy to take off anyway. You might need to pull the fans out of the way..

Okay so apparently the valve covers are the same as that of a 98 foresters... 0.o anyway
<quote> those Phase II T-covers are pretty easy to take off anyway. You might need to pull the fans out of the way..</quote> Does this mean that all I have to do is pull the timing cover and get to that bolt inside, then I can take the bracket off with the sensor? thatd be nice..

Ok, is the motor you have in your car right now, a twin cam EJ25? If so then that is a Phase I, if it is a Single cam EJ25, that would be a Phase II. So if you say the Valve covers are the same as a 98 Forester, then you have a Phase I...

98 Foresters ran a Phase I EJ25. Thats what I have in my car is a 98 Forester motor. 99 Foresters ran a Phase II single cam.

Hell, post a pic and that will tell the tail...

Older pic from when I replaced teh valve cover gaskets (and should have replaced the sonsor then):

Like I said, my motor is a ej22 (says it right on the bock) out of a 99 legacy allegedly they used this style phase2 motor for about a yr or so.

Now my friend just replaced the sensor in his forester and it apparently didnt help.. even tho the code he pulled came up with cps. What else could cause this issue?

Thats a Phase II...

Steel your buddies new sensor and see if that helps you at all... As for his problems, I have no idea... lol

Yup, phase2 ej22 as stamped on the block. I already bought my new sensor I just havent been able to get the old one out. Thats why Im wondering how to replace the sensor, if I have to remove the timing cover or not (im nowhere near the car to look at it in person so Id rather have an idea of what to do when I finally do get over there.)

Im also curious where would I locate info about the heads? Eveywhere I look the valve covers for an ej22 are more wavy like my old ones, the only thing Ive seen the match to my covers is the sohc ej25... but the block says ej22... how can I determine heads?

Looks like there is a bracket that can come off and the sensor might just fall out. I can look at my EJ25 heads I have out in my shed.

As for ID on the heads, I'm not sure. I can look at my extra ones I have. I have a set off my BH I saved...

Did you look and compare the crank and driver side cam gear from the new motor to the old one to see if they have the same trigger? On some instances, you have to swap the crank and driver side cam gear in order to work.

I didnt think to check.... I replaced the cam sensor today (finally, work takes a lot out of me) and still no go. We tried starting fluid and all I got was a flamethrower made of my throttle body. It cranks normal speed, its not a low battery issue. The only sensors not connected are the o2 sensors since theres no exhaust hooked up yet.

I admit the vacuum lines hooked to the valve covers have not been put on yet, I intended to replace them with breathers (delete some of the excess vacuum lines) but they havent been ordered yet. It couldnt be something that simple could it?

I would say regardless of the vacuum lines connected, exhaust bolted on, or even coolant in the engine, you should at least get it to fire. Now to have it stay running is the thing. I'm not overly familiar with this engine thou, only worked on the 25D and 251 to date.

So, I'd look for firing first, but it sounds like there is combustion there, as you mentioned a flamethrower from the throttle body. Perhaps the timing is off? Shouldn't have that happening unless you have a burnt valve or timing issue.

A stupid question may be, do you have gas in the car?
