Exhaust Setups

Ok guys I just wanted to see what everyone was running for exhaust since I have mine and I hate the way it sounds and am debating getting some headers and if there is no improvement just scrapping my exhaust and starting over. I have a 2.25" catback with a magnaflow muffler 3" outlet.

What do you hate about your exhaust?

Raspy? Burble? Back fire? Civic-ish?>

If you are looking for the classic subaru sound then you have to get those power robbing UEL headers.
Switching to a hi-flow cat will free up some of the dullness but it not really needed
Adding a resonator in the mid pipe will bring down the harshness of the exhaust tone.

UEL header(grind the imperfect welds away to improve flow & help with smoother TQ).
Hi-flow catalytic converter.
2.5 nch catback to axleback.

This combo will give you a nice & deep rumble.

It just doesn't sound right to me I'll try to post a video if I can but it just doesn't sound like I want it too. I thought the headers didn't take away power too 0_o... Gosh there is so much I still don't know...

I ran a 2.25" cat back for years on my '99 Wagon with a MaganFlow. Granted it was about the biggest can I could put under the car. (Like a 7" round). It was pretty good, but when I added a resonator... amazing. Dropped the tone, and made it less "droney." It seems like Subarus like larger mufflers and resonators to sound better.

EDIT: Oh, which MagnaFlow muffler do you have?

It was one I got off Carid its the 2.25" in and 3" out but I was thinking about increasing the tip to 4" and getting the resonator just to try stuff.

Equal length headers are the true power adders.. equal exhaust pulses..
Unequal length headers rob power because of the exhaust pulse pattern is off set..


The stock setup is a Y pipe which is equal so they are all pointless :-p

Thats not entirely true.
Equal will gain you more than than unequal. The exhaust pulses are just one peice of the puzzle. But runner length controls where in the power band the torque gain will be and runner diameter will determine the power gains more than the exhust pulses. Infact my personal theory is one a V8 uel headers will have a wider power gain but a lower peak gain.. Thats just a theory tho.

If your interested Silver, I have an extra MagnaFlow (4" tip, and larger body. A 14835) and a 2.25" resonator (Vibrant 1140) filling up my garage. Both are looking for a good home. : )

There should be a sticky on exhaust setup and a video clip so it will help others for their exhaust selection. Could of swore I saw a post about it awhile back :smt017

A couple years ago I made the switch from the stock EL headers to UEL on my BH and I noticed almost no loss in power or torque, and the car is my daily so I drive it ALL the time (stop and go traffic, freeway merges, etc) and no problems. Truthfully I didn't really notice any gains either (I didn't think I would, considering the car is otherwise bone-stock) but the change in sound is definitely noticeable even with the stock muffler.

My setup was ~$200...I used Ebay replicas, but it was a bit of work getting them to fit correctly. Now that they're on, they've been working very well.

almost everyone asks me if i have a wrx or sti swap due to the AWESOME subaru sound. priceless :wink:

Nice low rumble on idle, but I could get on it and people thought I had a catback'd WRX.

I personally like huffers exhaust set up. i would expect it to sound good, loud enough with out being overpowering or the annoying drone on the freeway. Plus the sti cat backs look bigger but not like coffie can big.

Am i right?

"Zak" has Huffers setup but with a OBX hi-flow cat and its very quiet until 4000 rpms. Then it gets throaty

You got it. I got the resonator because wagons have a larger cabin area. And the STi can is good - has quality baffling for tone. You really can't beat it. They're just a bit heavier than I would like.

And this was a REALLY crap video of me skidding around on some ice... there was snow but the parking lot was snow on top of ice. So once my tires bit through there was no traction anyway.
I had a slight header-midpipe leak at this point too so take it for what it's worth.

I don't think the clips do the tone any real justice, the camera was a point and shoot model about 5 years old so the mic is very limited.

I loved the setup though. If I get the car I want, next time I'm doing the same setup just with a STi Genome or CF canister to reduce weight.

Not stock they don't. Those are modded cars, right? That's easy - all they are doing is either bending or relocating hangers, and changing the angle of the muffler canister relative to it's input pipe.

It should work on your car but there's really no point except for style.

i like that you put how much it cost, im gona do that now. that should count for points in a sound off, i see a lot of wrx & sti's on the youtubes with thousands of dollars of cobb & the like, when a good custom setup is a few hundred.
