snorkusectomy?????

sorry im a noob probably a dumb question.what is a snorkusectomy and what are the benefits??from what ive read it makes the intake louder but you get an annoying hum is that true?is there any h/p or torque gains?and how is a snorkusectomy done?thanks.

I havn't done it yet but..

You take out the black "tube" going from your headlight to your fender, then take out all the plastic junk inside of your right fender

It is reversable, even though I wouldn't reverse it :-D Make sure to get the weather stripping tape to make the airbox a tight fit.

When you pull the resonator box out, the airbox doesn't sit flush to the fender wall. just put a line of the weather stripping around the rear of the airbox opening, or build something out of pvc pipe to run inside the fender. Also, get the fender plug for the front hole. (it's like a $5 part from the dealer) Someone else will chime in with the part # or the link to Scoobymods website that has this all spelled out.

Make sure your subaru was made 1996 or later (there is a tag on the inside of the drivers side door jam) or the plug won't fit.

I think I saw in one of your other threads that you are looking at a 2003 Legacy? If so. It is not quite the same as the older gen. Legacys. The BE/BH cars do not enter the fender at any point. There are just a bunch of "drop boxes" coming off of the main intake tube before it gets to the filter box which is on top of the throttle body.

HF[S]-Devil did a DIY write up about taking a piece of 2.5" exhaust piping and having it bent to go between the filter box and the "fan" portion of the intake which rests on the radiator support.

Since my car is white, I cut up a plastic container slightly bigger than the hole, and then I put two slits on the top and bottom. clipped it in the hole and youd never notice.

well at this time i think im not going to perform the snorkusectomy,maybe at some point if exhaust is upgraded.considering from what ive heard there is no real gains besides a throatier intake, the fact that ill just be getting my liscense back and being that im in my early 20's and wearing a baseball cap already makes me suspect id rather try to lay low and off the radar in theses necks of the woods.as best as possible anyways.

When people rave about the boxer sound, that's a part of owning a subaru. This is too. You won't regret it :D

I felt that my exhaust dramatically lowered the intake noise effect created by the snorkusectomy. Kind of sad. I really loved that sound. Desnork it, you'll love it! In fact, here's a sound clip I made so you can hear how the engine revs stock and then when you get into the deeper throttle where the snorkus monster lives.

I just went from an injen CAI back to the stock piping, but I took the snorkus and cut it right where the piping joins the resonator at the bottom to give me a semi-CAI.

With a little trimming to the bracket it bolts up and the fender plug fits.

End result, a nice throaty intake sound and noticeably quieter than the injen.

well after hearing the sound clip the snorkusectomy is back in full effect,as soon as i get some free time and a non rainy day.thanks for the ideas and help.

WARNING!!

there's a possibility of stallout by removing the snorkus!

the wheel well cover on the right side is made of 2 plastic pieces that overlap near the 12:00 position. if those pieces are separated water will be thrown up into the gap directly into the airbox, making your filter get wet and possibly damaging the MAF.

this happened to me and i had to replace the maf (the fact that the water killed the maf is purely speculatory).

i know this is a problem because i had stall outs with the snorkusectomy before i realized that the wheel well cover was split. i replaced the snorkus and didn't have any problems until the maf crapped out.

like i said, the reasons for the stallout are speculatory and the maf failing as a result is based on educated guessing..

but, it's something to think about/ watch out for.

/\ /\ x2 Be very weary of Large Puddles (see previous thread of mine) I was lucky and my air flow meter was salvageable. But there is now a more direct route for water to get to your engine. Of course, all the times I went mud running, I had already done the snorkus delete. Just be careful of water.

Strange. I have my foglight hole cut out with a snorkusectomy and have been in torrential down pour flooring it and in super thick snow/heavy traffic spray up and have yet to have a problem. I avoid puddles for the most part.... Hmm, I guess thats the risk with any intake.

yeah, my foglight covers have been 'ectomied as well; as you can see in my avatar. it's all in the direction of the water.

through the foglight hole it has to enter the hole then go UP the wheel well to the intake hole.

through the split at the top of the wheel well cover, the tire is spitting water directly into it.

i had not problems until the wheel well cover got split

I was rotating the ol' 14 inchers today and decided I might as well do surgery while I have the wheel off.

HOW THE HELL do you get the fender cover off without breaking it? I tried taking out the plastic pop rivet things but I ended up breaking one of them so I figured I should quit while I'm ahead.

the only thing you can do is break them.

Buy new ones for next to nothing at advance auto.

If you do it carefully you won't break them. Did it on my friend's WRX and reused every single one.
