Would it be possible to swap the headlamp assy's from a 99 Legacy to a 97? Specifically, I'm wondering if I can go from diffusion type headlamps to rear projection type.

Should be no problem. But I believe its 95/96 that have the different headlights. Maybe some 97's as well. The only thing is you'd have to swap the bulb plugs as well, because the older lights use H4/9003 bulbs, and the newer ones use 9007(?).

Is there a difference between the headlight on an Outback vs. a Legacy?

I doubt it. From the ones I've seen the two piece lights are nice and clear, and 95/96 are hard to see through because of all the redirection lines in the lenses. This applies to both normal legacy's and outbacks that I've seen on the road around here (and there's TONS)

It can be done. BTW, the "clear" type headlamps on the 97-99 cars are actually worse than the diffusion type on the 95-96.

oh whoops. I thought he had the 99 and was wanting older lights, since that was the trend on nasioc, people looking for older lights.
If you get some hella fog lamps, it doesn't matter what kind of headlights you have
