Ok...I finished my swap this weekend, great right? Well it started right up, even better, this replacement has gone very smoothly (this is my first Subaru so I'm psyked ). Motor warmed up and while t was doing that I'm checking stuff out making g sure vacuums are all connected...but I deleted egr valve since I didn't drill and tap the head for it, I saw a thread here that said it can be done safely. I thought what the hell. This is a suspicion of why my car is not starting...not sure if anyone knows how a egrless car acts...but anyway I had the car idling I drove it around the block, it started getting hot so I pulled over and temp went down like normal. So I went home and added more fluid and burped the air out of the radiator, that went well so I tightened the carb back down and topped it off. Great and done with that. So the car is idling and I'm feeling great, motor sounds god and smooth even though there are a couple vacuum lines unhook led from the egr solenoid. It runs great for about 20 more minutes and dies...starts back up for a minute and dies again...now it won't start at all. And it seems I don't have fuel pressure, my lines after the fuel filter feel soft. Just before that I had to replace my fuel rails and injectors with the red tops that originally were in my car.

....oh and I had the car off and with the key out and I can hear a buzzing...I'm searching and discover its coming from the iacv..I unplug it and it goes away, I plug it back in and it does it again. I'm like well that sucks because they are expensive as the day is long locally. I don't know if it buzzes when it goes bad or what, but when solenoid valves buzz it usually means its seized. Can they be cleaned and reused or is it not serviceable?

You have no fuel pressure and the iac is buzzing? Fuel pump humming doesn't mean its flowing. Whats you're pressure at the rail?

There is no fuel pressure in my lines. Ill check if the pump is priming, I know fuel pumps can go out in a moments notice. I'm going to get back after it today...do fuel pumps work on and off again, because when I decided I was going to do the swap the car died on my wife on the freeway, so I towed it to my dads house and it remained for a week...but I went out and started checking a few things...didn't disconnect anything or unscrew anything. And it just started up like nothing had happened to it. It seems like the same scenario. I'm going out in about an hour to go see if it will start.

When they go they can do whatever they want. Sometimes t hey start flowing less others they cut in and out and rarely do they ever just stop completely without doing something first.

You can always pull the fuel pump and jump 12 volts to it (while It is submerged into gas) and see if it is indeed flowing. If you run a jumper hose off the pump outlet and into a measuring cup you can run it for a minute straight and use the amount of gas pumped to determine the LPH its pumping. If it doesn't meet spec or come very close then voila

Alright ill try that I have some test leads. The iacv thing is still getting to me though I have never heard buzzng like that in the 3 1/2 years I owned the car..

Keep in mind I deleted the egr...it ran great for about an hour in total while I was checking all the wires and vacuums, I am not sure on which vacuums I should block off as well, I routed all the vacuums the way they were supposed to be and just threaded a bolt in where the tube goes in the I/m. The head on that motor is not tapped as it was removed from a 98 impress sport with a 5speed transmission. But now it seems to be fuel delivery...very heartbreaking thus far.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm......
I wonder if there is a way to fool the ecu that there is an egr eventhough its removed

That would be neat just to pass inspection, but would it affect the way a vehicle starts or even runs in idle?

And a little update I switched the iacv from my car to one I know works, and still a slight buzzing coming from it...so I guess its natural to do that. BUT sill no starting going on, still no fuel pressure, so testing a theory if you have one R3v3nge

The only way it would mechanically effect its idle is if you didnt plug the hole into the intake manifold. It is vacuum and not electronically controlled? I'm confused by what you're saying about vacuum.

Oops..testing a theory would be hard now...when it started dying yesterday it like symptoms of a fuel pump failing...I took my fuel line of and it dripped out..no pressure. ..do fuel pump relays tend to go out often?

The egr has a solenoid under the I/m with three barbs for samples to send to the manfold I think I may got it right though, I bought some new line and changed them as the diagram under the hood tells you.

Have you done an egr delete in your legacy...I'm wondering if I should take the valve body off and putting that block-off plate on in place

But anyway...at my lunchbreak today I went to an auto parts store like a mom and pop joint, I asked them if they carried fuel pumps for my sedan and the dude up front said sure we have two different ones for that year.. huh! The sizes were listed as 1.5 inches or 2.0 , never knew they would be different in the same year. So I asked him to see one and he brought the smaller diameter one an in the box it has the pump and a couple rubber boots and o-rings and a wire harness...the name on the box was BAR, I don't really know what to think other than they are most likely blasted cheap parts.any one heard of that company or even the size difference?

You should make sure the fuel lines are connected properly.
Egr will not change the way it runs. Just check engine light.
Haha my friend had this EXACT same problem... I mean exact. Amywys turned out his cam sensor
Was too close and it would rub. Then it would get warm and the sensor would stop working from the friction. we put a new one in with a spacer never had a problem again.

Not saying thats your problem but dont just rule something out because you dont think itcan besomethimg..

Egr can change the way it runs. If it is showing closed to the computer, but the valve is stuck wide open, the ecu is not adjusting fueling strategy to compensate for the less likey to combust exhaust gas and essentially choking out the car. It can happen the other way as well. Valve stuck closed, ecu commands open and adjusts fueling accordingly, surges and runs rich.

It wouldnt prevent it from starting though

Alrighty then...well ill take my cam and crank sensor out of my other motor and see what happens...I'm still thinking fuel pump because of lack of pressure in the lines after filter, it was running beautifully for that hour...then kaput...thanks for your help guys. Ill update later.

Cam and crank sensor installed still nothing...i tapped the gas tank a couple times with head of a 12 oz dead blow and it sputtered a bit so that is narrowing it down, going to get a fuel pump now...

I looked through the box of old parts and it seems I forgot to put the iac gasket back on...Ooops lol..that is going back on as well.

however dont forget that the ECU can see EGR flow.
there is a vacuum switch, if you delete the EGR valve,
the vacuum switch wont see any flow, and the ECU
will run as if it its closed.

Will the egr delete have consequence on how it will drive though? Ill be driving it tomorrow, just finished the fuel pump about 2 hours ago, I couldn't really tell before..I drove it for a while with a bad egr valve for about three weeks...it felt like the motor was a bit muddy but it was 105 degrees and kind of humid when that happened, I have yet to put it on a scanner and see whats what..I
Prepared for a few codes but confident only the egr code will remain after I clear them. I had a p0400 misfire code when my spark plug shot out of the head at 65 miles an hour a couple years ago.

I heard a very strange noise coming from underneath my car when it shut died last weekend, I think it came from the transmission. It sounded like bacon frying it went on for about three seconds and stopped..?

I didnt think the 95 ecu would have the logic capable of determining flow. I didnt think that started tilk the phase 2 ejs? I could definitely be wrong of course.

That is a strange noise op.. does the car roll free? Possible that the torque converter locked up and caused motor to stall out? Although if that was the case shutting the motor off should release pressure enough to disengage and allow the motor to fire up.

Possible your cat superheated and or is plugged? That could be a bacon frying noise..

Could be, I don't really know the history of the vehicle before I got it..besides it was owned by an older couple they used to travel with it...in short everything on it was original till I got it..I replaced both cv's, did water pump twice and all seals but rear main and vapor seal (they are going to be done soon if I decide to switch blocks with the one in my 90 wagon.( I'm still rolling that swap around for cost effectiveness).

The tranny actually seems more crisp going into gear now that I have replaced my motor, but is a little noisy
..I hear that bacon frying sound and a new one just heard earlier tonight, when taking off from a dead stop and accelerating mildly it sounds like a really light scraping just before it shifts to second gear..but shifts a little sharper, no grinding or slipping. The scraping isn't like a metal on metal sound, hard to describe.

Car is running like a bat out of hell  , I couldn't resist opening her up a bit on the freeway..I know newer motor feels a ton better, but I put on that msd coii  bosch 7.5 mm wires  ngk v power plugs  i had my hybrid weaponR short ram before i saw it here, and cleaned my grounds and tightened them, running a cheap full synthetic for 100 miles...got total oil pressure back (poor car was leaking from both rear seals since I got her). All in all she feels great runs good, shifts great, just a little bugged about those noises coming from the 4eat.

Thanks man, pretty happy about my first Subaru swap...now, almost time for the next one. This one will be pretty damn close to a complete project..have a bit of body work to do, lots of motor work, interior, suspension, ridiculously wobbly shifter bugs me about as much as the bad headgaskets. It will be a good time.

I will have to divert to the tranny thread to get knowledge on them noises then?

01-20-2013, 08:34 PM
Depends... are you sure its tranny noise?

pleaidestar
01-21-2013, 01:55 PM
Not 100%, what else could make that noise? I don't have bad tires, both cv's are less than 6 months old, brake pads are fairly new...maybe grease my caliper slides, they could be dragging a bit
