Looks good and good price but are they unequal length?

Yeah. Whenever you read "Borla Knockoffs", these are them.

Have you used these?

I want that sti rumble and i heard the only way to get that is it the headers are unequal length

I've owned two sets and currently am running them with a full exhaust. It sounds like a demon who found out his stock in marshmallows just dropped a dozen points right after his broker suggested a heavy investment and he's out for blood.

i bought a set off of ebay fitment wasnt great but i bent them... and i think they are cracked now after 20k miles?

going to buy another set but probably spend more then a $100 this time. haha let me know if anyone has one that hasnt cracked. i was going to buy another ebay one and while they make my header back have them double the welds and beef them up or something.

Pretty much will fit any non turbo EJ series motor that has dual port heads up to around 08. I believe they started changing things before the FB engine conversion. I know the '10 Legacy has an EJ motor but different heads.

what about years prior? like a 96 OB? its still a ej25. for some reason when I look at compatability things they all start in 97 (on ebay at least) anybody know the reason for this?

chuckthefuk

96 ob 5mt are ej22e and 96 Ob 4eat are ej25d. 97+ ob r all ej25d

Because of a lack of information about earlier models, most likely.

90-95 EJ22s are dual port. 96ish-01 EJ22s are single port.
All EJ25s are dual port.

The reason I say 96ish is because 96 was a hybrid year for heads, so some may have dual port heads, some don't. It's a very simple matter of looking under the engine, it's very obvious.

Also dont let it be forgotten that there is a difference in exhaust ports between phase 1 and phase 2 2.5's regardless of dohc or sohc.

But there's no applicable difference in the context of headers.

1055
02-24-2013, 11:45 PM
Yes there is. Especially if you're going the cheaper route. The patterns are slightly difference. Try and put phase 2 headers on a phase 1 engine or vice versa.

Ask me how I know

How do you know? and do u have pictures? I've run the same headers from P1 to P2 and vise versa. even the Chinese headers don't discriminate between phases.

I think you've just run into the typical situation most of us have: quality control is junk. I don't really believe there's any difference in the exhaust ports themselves, or the J-pipe connection.

And I've put the same headers that were on an EJ25D onto my EJ22E and then they went on an EJ251. All fit fine.

Interesting. Back in the day when borla made real borla headers (not the cheap bullshit ones they are trying to pass off now) I purchased a set that didnt fit. They informed me that I had purchased a set designed for the phase 1 engine. It had a shallower depth (didnt clear the steering rack external lines) and the front holes were off about 5/16 of an inch on either side. I bought another p2 set and sure enough the collector was deeper and the bolt holes were different.

I dont have any pictures, this was years ago.

I also ran into this issue about a year ago with both speedy racer and dna motoring uel headers.

Maybe they were all just shitty to begin with

There's a fabricator on USMB who is now making UEL headers for both single and dual port EJs.

I just added these headers to my BE today actually. Rest of the exhaust is still stock until next week. Just the headers alone u can hear a very small growl u kinda have to listen for it. But I had these on my BK as well and sounded awesome. I love every minute of it.

Get speedyracers

knockoffs you just need a crowbar and or ratchet straps to make them fit where genuine borlas should fit right up

With the power level most people are dealing with, it won't be a noticeable difference.

Yeah, I doubt it would be any different in regards to power. You'd probably get less of that sewing machine sound with the USMB ones though.

My 95 2.2 had duel ports. All original. Best thing to do is to actually look under there and confirm if its single or duel

1055
05-11-2013, 10:01 AM
That's because your 95 is a phase I 2.2. anything after 96 is certainly a phase II, and dependng on build date for 96 could be either pI or pII

Wiscon_Mark
05-11-2013, 02:24 PM
Technically, 96/97 was just a head redesign, not a new phase. PhaseII EJ22s started in 99. Completely different block, heads, etc.

Grimmrican
05-11-2013, 02:27 PM
I was gonna say, I thought phase ii started with the 3rd gens... Something new we all learn everyday lol

1055
05-11-2013, 02:32 PM
Phase II EJ22 motors are intereference, single port head motors... which we saw introduced in 1997..

1055
05-11-2013, 02:33 PM
The biggest difference between phase I and phase II is interference vs non interfernce.. also dual vs single port exhaust and the vastly different valve covers

See my post:

Phase II was 99, not 97.

And the 3rd gen Legacys didn't have the 2.2L. EJ25 only. The phase II EJ22 only existed in the 99 Legacy and the 99-01 Impreza. It was supposedly a bored out EJ20G block, completely different than the previous EJ22E engines that were made from 90-98. Sometime around 96/97 the heads were slightly changed and the compression ratio was increased, but it was not a radical redesign.

Derp I knew that lol. Also aren't all 2.2 eng interference?? I can't speak about the 2.5 but I can assume they are about the same difference for some exceptions such as coolant passages and bore size and whatnot. Again I'm only assuming. Don't hold me to it lol

chuckthefuk

had a few customers come in with them. after a few years the welds tend to loosen up but the sound was a bit off. its expected since its EL.. much better performance then the china UEL on ebay.. but then again OBX is china :-/

No. The phase I 2.2 is NON interference.

So, wait... 97 had different heads, but was it non-interference still or did the redesigned heads change that?

1055

Once the heads became single port exhaust, the engines became interference engine. They upped the compression ratio.

Which I have always known as phase I vs phase II but wisconsin mark is saying otherwise.

Yes, the change in heads made them interference motors. I read that the change of the valve shape could cause them to overextend themselves and knock on something.

Which I have always known as phase I vs phase II but wisconsin mark is saying otherwise.

The guys over at LegacyCentral always referred to 99 being the second phase EJ22 and there's a lot of EJ22 knowledge there, so I always trusted them.

There's a lot of misinformation out there about Subarus. I had a well meaning shop owner try to tell me that all Subarus after 95 had headgasket problems. I tried explaining to him that it was actually the 2.5L motors and they didn't start till '96, but it was like talking to a brick wall.

So Just to be clear The speedy racer ebay header does fit a phase one 1995 dual port head legacy L? It clears the PS lines and subframe? Is there an eL header that fits too or does that defeat the whole purpose of this mod? The wrx one obviously doesn't fit right?

couchfuzzy
04-23-2014, 01:53 AM
Yes the Speedyracer header will fit without issue on the 95, the wrx one will not tho, unless youre running a turbo motor and subframe.. you could go with any dual port EL header for subaru 2.5L, the UELs will give you the rumble.. the EL headers will sacrifice some of the rumble for more power gains.. although small on the N/A motors
