I have done a motor replacement in my 95 legacy sedan with a 4eat, I notice the sounds coming From under the the car a few weeks prior to the replacement..it sounds like bacon frying for a few seconds after I turn the car off, and while driving it sounds like a very light scraping from takeoff from a dead stop going into second gear and it disappears after second engages its barely audible...but I could hear it loud and clear. Since i noticed it before I replaced the 2.2 I figure it would be a tranny issue..I know squat about transmissions, so I came here. Tranny has 229k miles by the way if it helps, I changed the fluid about 3 months before I did the motor replacement and may have started then. And can anyone confirm what fluid the 4eat uses from hat model year...I was told it was dex-merc 2 by an employee of O'reillys and it seemed hard for him to find out while I was there. I'm hoping I don't have the wrong fluid in there.

thanks for the link chuck, seems we can use a wide range of fluids? Am I tracking that right? That each type of fluid will change the shifting dynamics. The dex-merc 2 that I'm using, doesn't feel the same as when I bought the car, had the car for 3 years and changed the fluid about ten months ago. It does feel different definately, kind of muddy and the searching while revs drop and eases into gear, taking turns sometimes will give me a jolt.
With the new motor, the transmission still has the same symptom as above but less muddy and picks up faster from a dead stop retaining the torque. When its at speed its the same but revs drop a little bit less while it figuring out what to do. It just doesn't seem right.

Alldata 10.51 reports dex ii ...
A few drain and fills will free up some of the slugishness. In the past I have used additives on the later 2000 BE BH chassis. Some engagement issues seemed to be resolved with that method. Others report cleaning and adding grounds helps with smooth shifting points.
I am not a 4eat guy... so not much more I can help you with.

Go Lubegard ATF Protectant! And any decent Dex II ATF will work.

I did wind up putting dex lll, under recommendation of the O'reillys employee. Just finished the first change with dex ll, I'm not going to put the lubeguard in there for another 100 or so miles...wanted to change the fluid one more time after that then ill add it.
The fluid I just changed is not a very good looking red at all and smelled burnt. My girl said I looked like I wasted somebody with my hands, after I turned the last thread on the plug that stuff came out with some velocity lol.

I noticed 2 large vacuum lines that were broken too...but the they don't seem to go any where there is just a steel bracket thats bolted to the bell housing. The lines themselves are like a 3/8 id line it has some gunk in them..looks like they are dumping crape on the bell by the diff. dipstick. I never noticed those, I must have broken them when I replaced my motor, is there supposed to be a catch or something, I have the feeling something missing.

Take some pictures... it sounds like it might be windshield washer hoses but those wouldnt be bolted to the bell housing.

I can't I'm on my phone...I don't think they are for washers, there are two nipples cast into the bell housing. The bracket that holds them is through the 14mm bolt that keeps the bell to the tranny.
The hoses that are there are formed to contour under the pitchstop firewall mount and into the nipple on the driver side of the bell housing before it mates to the transmission, the second hose is only like 3 inches long in the shape of a 'u' on the passenger side nipple on the bell housing.

Lol...I wish I could post pictures, I'm sure it would help you greatly. They have to be breathers or something..I just came back from driving it after the fill and gear oil from the center differ squirted out from the dipstick tube, the dipstick is super loose in the tube. F**king hell, I didn't even know one was there, now its kicking my ass.

Anyway...I looked at a picture of the 4eat transmission on north ursalia and it shows those lines but they are routed differently...routed back into the tranny..it was a pdf file so it didn't show me a use for them.

Did the atf change again with lubeguard...picks up faster, less hesitation pretty crisp shift into second but the noises I was hearing a few days ago still remain...I think the vibration may be the start of torque bind or it already been doing that and never noticed. Since I'm driving without power steering I can feel the tranny more. I don't know, but the two atf changed with lube guard yielded results as you said it would chuck...thanks.

ooh my bad huffer, this thread was a pretty lonely one...mostly talking to my self like I do when I'm off my meds...lol...but thanks guys...hopefully those noises will be narrowed down soon, I'm hoping its just that I may have to re grease my brake caliper slides, but that is just a shot in the dark as well as something else I should do anyway.

You're only talking to yourself because we can't do much about those hoses unless you post some pics. All the 4EATs I've seen have a very simple mechanism. I dont recall any rubber hoses or lines. Just a speed sensor(s), and temp sensors. Apart from the fill tube and drain plug these are sealed units.

Not sure about 2nd gen 4EAT's, but my '91 has a filter that is located on the left side, by the rad. (love the automatic-but these SUCK!)

I'm sure but, that transmission photo on northursalia looks just like my transmission and those hoses are in the same place on that picture just routed differently...hooray for one-offs!!!!
I can send pics to your email if you would like...can't post them here because I don't have a computer anymore.
