I'll be doing all the mechanical stuff aside from the wiring but I am wondering how much I should expect to pay for a totaled Wrx 2.0. I have tried to piece together a Wrx swap before and it was a pain in the arse, so I want a full totaled car to pull the parts from. My buddy is FINALLY selling me his mint-ish 98 outback 5 speed, and I want to do a legit swap.

I've started this process also. I'm thinking a complete parts car will be $3500-4500. At least in WA. I'm pricing them out for my BD right now... Last car I saw sell was an 02 WRX hit front and rear, with 122K for $4K with buyer fees and such.
slavic.86 might have a bit more feedback since I think he has done this a few times.

I did look on an auction website and the bids start at around $750, but yeah I'd want to spend a little more and know for sure that it runs well and what not.

Most insurance auctions wont let you start them up, so it's always a bit of a gamble. However, most of the time, if a car was wrecked, it was running good when it was crashed... Most of the time...
