I was just wondering what the cost of personal plates in different states, so I looked some up. Some are one time costs, some are every time you renew registration. Maryland isn't the worst. Oregon sucks more. Check them out:

Wisconsin is $15 extra per year, so $90 annually instead of $75. It's also $15 extra for custom plate designs (Green Bay Packers, etc) besides the custom lettering, so you could end up paying $105.

Ohio = $55 every year, $90 for personalized plates. Plus EPA checks every 2 years if the car is more than 5 years old, and you live in a county where E-Check is required (fortunately EPA checks are free).

Wow never knew how lucky pa was with vanity plates. $20 one time to get the plate then it's the normal cost to register each year.

Exactly what I'm thinking.

I'm surprised other states price them so high. I feel like if they would lower the price, they would get more people buying them (aka more revenue), and then on top of that vanity plates are often easier to remember than a random set of letters and numbers. It seems like a no brainer to get as many out there as possible.

CT is not too bad, it is $97 up front but there is no increase in yearly fee.

I have been toying with the idea, but I have not yet decided what to put on there.

Mass is 75 every year-with some restrictions-specaitly plates are 90 every two years and you get what they give you-I shelled out 240 last year for all three of my legs.

MT is $25 extra for the initial, then $10 extra for the renewal.

Personally i chose to just do standard plates on mine with permanent registration which is an option for a car 11yrs or older. Runs about 3x what a single year would. Mine ran about $165 for title transfer, new issue plates (not personalized), and lifetime registration, in AK i paid $150 for 2yr tags on existing plates...
