Heated Seat Install - Couple of Questions

I picked up a full leather interior from a 99 Outback w/ heated seats that I am going to put into my girls 95 Legacy. I'm not the best at wiring but I have installed several stereos, amps, subs, etc so I'm hoping this isn't too bad. From what I've been reading on installing these seats, I could use the stock wiring harness but have to do some add'l wiring w/ the relay and stuff. I've also read that using this add a circuit kit might be the easier way to go. Has anyone had any experience with these before?

I found a wiring diagram and it seems to be pretty self explanatory but would I basically replace the 20 amp fuse with the add a circuit kit and bypass the relay? I don't have the OEM switches so I might end up using some aftermarket ones but the wiring should be very similar, correct? If not just find a pin-out diagram for whatever switches I end up with and match the wires.

From all of my searching on here and nasioc I haven't really found a detailed write up so I am going to try and get a detailed one together when I do this. I know having pictures of everything definitely helps me when I'm about to tackle a project.

I have 05 wrx heated seats in my car and the switches. I'd like to wire them up as well but like you all the threads I found were about adding aftermarket heaters or just wiring them up to the existing harness except my car didn't come with a heated seat option so I have to wire it from scratch.

You still need the relay.

Basically:

You are going to connect an inline fuse holder like this:

to your positive terminal on your battery like I have done for my Hella horns:

You then run that wire to pole number 2 on your relay.

Then you get an add a circuit like this:

Connect that to fuse number 3 under your dash an run the other end of the wire to pole 1 on the relay.

The rest should be pretty self explanatory.

I personally would stick with OEM switches just for a clean install but whatever floats your boat. You can find the switches on ebay for a decent price sometimes but getting them with the pigtail is sometimes hard.

***Edit*** I just went to ebay to look for some and found two with pigtails (for my 04 WRX) for $39 + $11 shipping which is reasonable for a set with pigtails.

Note that the pigtail connectors that you see for sale on ebay for the subaru heated seats only has 4 poles (for an 02+ wrx) instead of the 6 poles that the 2nd gen switch has (for the dimmer)

Good idea! I think I may have found a whole center console w/ switches and cup holder, no pigtails though.

I did a write up here in the DIY section about how I used all OEM parts harvested from several junkyard cars to get that real OEM look. In fact, that system is for sale now, as I have to figure it out in the 3rd gen now.

Has anyone just bought a universal kit and installed it? I seen one on ebay that had me tempted. Looked like switches might fit in the factory switch locations.

I have known plenty of people who have installed the universal kits in their car. There is really only like 2 or 3 manufacturers of the aftermarket kits.

There is even waterproof elements. The carbon fiber elements can be cut to fit. I have seen people go as far as to put them in their headrests!!

Just use the OEM switches and nobody will be able to tell the difference.

FWIW I have a set of OEM switches without the pigtails if you want to pick them up for $15 shipped.

Yeah I was looking at some carbon fiber ones. I liked the switches with them cause they had 5 settings.

To be honest... I can barely tell the difference between the stock low setting and the stock high setting... Having another 3 settings is not that much of an advantage.

but they're also adding the step of installing the heating elements into a seat.

I figure with a wired seat (sadly I pulled the harness instead of cutting the upstream wires) and switch its mostly tapping into a 12v, finding a good ground and putting an in-line fuse for the simplest installation. I think the switch [I have from a 98 OB} is just 2 positives and a ground? I haven't looked too terribly closely at what I've got, but I'm hoping to get the details ironed out so when I do the install it's an in-and-out job.

I may pull the covers off and put my fabric on the OB seat so I can keep the same interior... but that's details once i get it functioning.

We did get mine put it, it wasn't too difficult actually. We went to a local junkyard and grabbed all of the wiring for both seats and the switches. We pulled the relay as well (located behind the glove box). From there it was just 12v power and ground. I'll try and find the wiring diagram I had.

So you pulled heating elements and swapped them into your seats then got ALL the wiring involved, switches, harnesses to heating elements, to and from switches, AND a relay from behind the glove box?

Ah, so, I'm short the harness from seats to switches to relay then. I have driver's seat with heater but not the harness OUT of the seat (stupid pull :smt012 ), I have the switches, but no relay or wiring between.
I'll look firward to your info then, I'm sure I can piece those connectins together.

Hmmm, can you give more detail on the relay behind the glove box? location, size, pix? ;)
Also, when wired, where do the wires emit from under the carpet to the center console? if wired but not installed, are the seat switches an/or seat harnesses just tucked under the carpeting??
Did you pull the box and the backing so you can see all the heater pluming too?
Turns out my fuse box has a 15a fuse IN the slot LABELLED seat heater. . . .
fuse no. 4, middle, top row, b/t tail clearance and cigar/mirror

I'm a BIT interested in the whole shebang (harnesses, door-to-door, relay, etc.) but not for 75. :smt011 I understand you value your time, and you did a good job recreating the cold weather heated seat package for a car without (as is mine ;) but. . . . . since it's been on the chopping block for almost a year, consider halfing that asking price - shipped and you might have a taker here. :smt023

RE: heated mirrors: Do they fold in too? Not powered folding, just break-away like the other factory mirrors.

RE: heated mirrors: Do they fold in too? Not powered folding, just break-away like the other factory mirrors.

The only USDM 2nd gen that had folding mirrors was the 95 model year, maybe only on the LSI model, so no folding mirrors. The passenger one is almost brand new, still shiny black, not faded like most of them get.


Since everything is out of the car I should be able to get some better pics into the write up just have to find the time.
