So my pads are pretty much toast on my '97 Legacy and I know nothing about replacement pads. With that said, yes I know how to change them, but I'm finding so many different brands that I know nothing about. Trying to get the best bang for my buck here. Also is there anything else I should be replacing other than just the pads? The brakes are fine other than the pads just wearing out.
Thanks

If you can afford it, upgrade to the 2 piston caliper out of the GT or outback (if you don't have it yet). Check the brake sticky for other upgrades.

If you just want to change pads then whats your budget? You also need to replace the rotors (or at least resurface them if serviceable), brake fluid and make sure to grease up the sliding pins and of course the pads mating surface to the caliper

Make sure you have wheels than can clear those 2 piston calipers, too. 97-99 GT & Outback brakes require 16" wheels. Only the 90-94 Legacy SS & 96 Outback 2 piston calipers fit under 15" wheels and they have significantly fewer pad options since they're an older, less popular brake design.

The 2000-01 Legacy 10.7" dual piston calipers, however, will fit under 15" wheels. I don't know if they'll just mount up to an older Legacy though. From 02+ though, they moved back up to a larger size (11.2")

A popular brand in the Subaru world for pads is Hawk. Definitely check out the stickies as r3v_v3nge has suggested.

97 outback 2 pistons = 15" wheels

Thanks for the responses. I am running 17's so looks like I should be able to fit any of the options.
I'm looking to try and stay under about $500 max, I'd like to spend about $400.
Where could I find the different rotors/calipers and would that require different brackets or should they just bolt right on?

It must be 98 then. I know I had some BG front brakes that wouldn't fit under my 95's 15" wheels.

I have 04 wrx brakes. They bolted right on. I picked up used, but in good condition rotors, calipers, and pads for $200.

If you already have the 2 piston front brakes, then just upgrade the pads. I really like Hawk HPS pads for a good, clean, street pad. Low noise and dust but they bite great.

If you are looking to upgrade I have a set of calipers and rotors for the rears for sale right now. Its an upgrade to the 3rd gen size in back.
