Snagged a 95 Blue Iris Metallic Legacy L wagon for $830. I'll try to get pics up tomorrow. It has 252k, EJ22, pours oil out very fast which I'm thinking will be an easy fix, and is in quite good condition otherwise. It runs well despite the oil leaks. It has a little rust in the rergular places, but nothing too bad.

Plans are to restore it to original condition. It will probably end up being my mom's daily driver. I'd like to delete the hill holder and ABS, but have to wait and see.

Mod list:
None.

Some previous owner or shop has ruined the key in the crank sprocket. I will need to replace the sprocket, key, and pulley. I intend to make the crankshaft work as is.

My immediate problem is removing the sprocket. It will not slide off. I can't pry it off with two screwdrivers. My next idea is to cut the sprocket with a dremel along the keyway to avoid cutting into the crankshaft nose, and then splitting it.

Anybody have a better idea?

tap the two holes in the sprocket to 8x1.25, and use a harmonic balancer puller or strong back.

I like this. I'll have to get some taps.

Bought a tap and die set today, but didn't get to use it as it was already getting dark when I got home. Did some more restoration on the headlights instead.

Progress has been slow lately. My sinus infection reasserted itself a few days after I ran out of antibiotic. I did get the holes tapped though. Used some ATF since I don't have tap oil at home. It worked quite well.

Wentz, you're brilliant. It slid right off with the puller.

The key is much shorter than I expected. The front part is broken off, but I think I still know where I put it. It almost looks fused to the crankshaft which hopefully is not the case. It is supposed to be a seperate replaceable part, right? It has to be or it would be impossible to change the front main seal which is what I'm trying to do anyway.

I am not getting anywhere with this key. It's not welded in place, but it is stuck really well in there. I'm not sure how to proceed, and would welcome some suggestions.

EDIT: Okay nevermind. I broke it out once I decided to use a heat gun and more violence. Keyway was really tight, not sloppy, so all is good.

Next is buying parts. I need a front main seal, woodruff key, crank sproket, and crank pulley.

Grabbed everything but the pulley new from the dealer for $50!

Crap. There is no strikethrough. :smt009

I just put the new oil seal on. I need to file down the edges of the keyway a little to fit the new key. Probably won't happen today though since I'm working outside in the snow. It got too wet to continue.

Keyway is fixed. New key and sprocket installed. Waiting for a pulley to arrive so I can put the front of the engine all back together.

I checked the valve cover gaskets and they look and feel new, so I left them in. There is an oil leak over the exhaust manifold I need to track down. Or I suppose it could be power steering.

Cam seal?
I know mine is leaking, and our cars are the same age, yours with about 50k more on the odo. I reccommend you fix it if it's real bad. my valve cover was leaking into the same spot, and when it burned off, the fumes would come into the cabin and I'd start getting headaches and dizzy. not good, my friend. Not good at all.

I inspected the cam seals while I had the timing belt off and they both look clean. No signs of a leak. It seems to be lower and further back. It's a steady drip, but no fumes get inside the cabin yet.

Yesterday I seperated the grill and sprayed plasti-dip on the chromed outer part since the chrome plating was worn off at the sides. I also sprayed the first coat of clear on the refinished headlights. That went well for about one minute and then a screen fell down on one of them and poured out most of its dust and lint. So now I get to sand it down and start all over again. Joy.

Today I installed the crankshaft pulley I got from d1giphux (thank you), installed belts, started installing fans when I was interupted by a thunderstorm. I'll go back later if it clears and I have time. I really want to start it up again today.

Plastidip makes the fake chrome around the grille look so much better

I like it a lot so far. I want to do the upper door moldings too.

The storm never cleared out, so no more progress today.

Just to update, the oil consumption just stopped on its own all at once, which is weird but good I guess. Sometimes it would smoke a lot after driving somewhere and stopping, but then the waterpump failed and was replaced. Since then it doesn't do that anymore, so it must have been water vapor instead of smoke. Also had to replace a fuelpump. One foglight bulb has burned out and still needs to be replaced. That's it for now! I'll see if I can get some new pictures soon.

It has proven itself a reliable DD.
