Just wondering what people on here are using for break in oil on a newly rebuilt motor and why you use that compared to others.

Usually something with a good zinc and phosphorus content. If you can run a straight grade thats a plus. Ive run shell SAE30 rotella with good luck

So nobody uses "break in" specific oil?
Joe Gibbs, Brad Penn, AMSoil, Royal Purple all have specific break in oils.
Not to mention the plethora of ZDDP supplements/additives that are out there.
I guess I will go with AMSoil because I am obviously a dealer so I get a great price on it and it looks like it is right in line with what most people suggest; SAE30, Zinc + Phosphorus, no friction modifiers ect.

I used some when I built a 472 but that was a few years ago and I don't remember what kind I used but if your an amsoil dealer I don't think your going to find a better price. They all pretty much have the same additives that you mentioned and (I think) it comes down to brand preference. I know it was a bigger deal to use it with the older style engine.

the only reason I've seen people use a specific type of "break-in" oil is when they have flat tappet cams, otherwise basically the stuff that you listed applies, and that goes for a lot of oils that arent marketed for "break-in"...

anything. you're only gonna run it for a few hundred miles anyways, maybe less.
remember, whatever oil you use is going to immediately get polluted with the assembly lube used when you put the engine together.
honestly i would just put in whatever is cheapest, 10w30, let it idle for a while, drive it a short distance, then drain it and replace the filter and then youre good to go.
for you case, its not a turbo engine, so the "break in" is not as crucial

I used Joe Gibbs BR30 when I did a "built" EJ25D/EJ251 a few years back. For the LS6 in my CTS-V I used some sort of conventional 5W-30 or 10W-30 + the GM Engine Oil Supplement for the initial start up and high idling period, then drained that out and put in BR30.
Out in the garage I've got a couple bottles of Comp Cams break-in additive that I plan to use (with some sort of conventional oil) whenever I get around to doing my EZ30 swap.
